Bolidt: Cruise Refits Surge

Bolidt Synthetic Products & Systems says a vibrant cruise ship refurbishment market has brought on an all-time high in refit work, including completion of five major ship projects so far this year, plus bookings for a further seven large ship jobs as part of a workload that the company says includes ‘dozens’ of forthcoming projects planned for well into 2019.In 2018, Bolidt has been a key participant in refurbishment and upgrade projects involving NCL’s Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Star; the RCCL vessels Mariner and Independence of the Seas; and the Azamara Club Cruises ship Azamara Pursuit.

Royal Caribbean Buys $1 Bln Stake in Silversea Cruises

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL.N) said on Thursday it would buy a 66.7 percent stake in privately owned Silversea Cruises for about $1 billion to add ultra-luxury and expedition cruises to its fleet.Silversea Cruises, which has nine ships, sails to destinations including Antarctica, the Arctic and Greenland, with most of its tickets selling for more than $5,000.In contrast, the most expensive cruises run by Royal Caribbean under its Azamara Club Cruises brand cost around $3…

Ctrip, Royal Caribbean Cruises to End SkySea Joint Venture

Royal Caribbean Cruises and Ctrip announced today that they are ending the SkySea Cruise Line joint venture. TUI AG's Marella Cruises has agreed to purchase Golden Era, with delivery expected in December, 2018. As a result of this transaction, TUI Cruises will now retain Mein Schiff 2 in its fleet, rather than selling it to Marella Cruises, giving TUI Cruises increased capacity in the strong German market. After the sale of Golden Era, it is expected that SkySea will wind down its business operations before the end of 2018. The companies expect that favorable business conditions in China and elsewhere will allow them to absorb most SkySea employees into available positions at RCL and Ctrip.

Royal Caribbean to Install NavBox Across Entire Fleet

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCC) has signed a deal with NAVTOR to install the NavBox navigation solution across its entire corporate fleet of 49 vessels, in a deal which spans RCC's six different operating companies. E-navigation specialist NAVTOR launched NavBox in 2013. The solution, which complements NAVTOR’s range of electronic navigational chart (ENC) based services, automatically downloads, distributes and updates all vessel navigational charts and publications, cutting administration time, while ensuring the very latest, compliant charts are always at hand.

Cruiseport Boston Closes Out 2016 Cruise Season

As Cruiseport Boston closes out its successful 2016 season, 2017 is already shaping up to be a record year with 151 calls scheduled for next cruise season. The 2016 season saw 115 calls by a record 32 unique ships with ten maiden calls to the port, including Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas, the largest cruise ship to ever call the Port of Boston. Cruiseport Boston has seen years of steady growth which has contributed to the booming cruise business in Boston.

SA Ports Gears for Cruise Season

South Africa’s ports are ramping up for another busy cruise season with at least14 luxury cruise lines and 20 vessels of varying sizesset to ferry international and domestic tourists across the country’s port cities. The 2016/17 South African cruise season kicks off on 1 November.MSC SINFONIA – the largest and most popular cruise ship in the local cruise calendar –will be a highlight when she arrives in her homeport of Durban in the early hours of Tuesday, 1 November on a journey from Venice, Italy, carrying 2600 European and South African passengers. The ship has been accommodated at the Port of Durban’s longer M berth since last year after being lengthened by 24 metres and undergoing a multi-million Euro revamp.

Europa 2 Set for Maiden Voyage to New Orleans

More than 500 cruise passengers aboard Europa 2 will spend a few days in New Orleans next week, as the luxury cruise ship makes her maiden voyage to the Port of New Orleans Julia Street Cruise Terminal Monday, where port officials will host an onboard ceremonial plaque exchange with the vessel’s captain. “New Orleans consistently ranks atop the world’s top destinations for visitors and cruise lines see the Port of New Orleans as an attractive call on their itineraries,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO.

New Orleans Port Tops 1M Passengers Again

Port of New Orleans cruise terminals handled more than 1-million passengers in 2015, totaling 1,023,700, up 1 percent compared to 2014. The total marks the fifth consecutive record year and with new and larger ships on tap for 2016, Port officials expect another robust cruise season. “Year-end numbers illustrate how popular the Port and the City of New Orleans are with cruise passengers throughout the nation,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. Miami, Fla-based Carnival Cruise Line is increasing capacity on its year-round four- and five-day itineraries by 34 percent in April when the Carnival Triumph replaces the Carnival Elation in New Orleans. Also, Guilford, CT-based American Cruise Line will add a third riverboat named America to its home-ported fleet in New Orleans.

Another Megaship to Join Royal Caribbean Cruise Fleet

Royal Caribbean has ordered a fourth ship for its Quantum Class family of ships from Meyer Werft. The ship will be delivered in 2019. With two Quantum-class vessels already delivered and a third under construction, Royal Caribbean Cruises on Thursday announced plans to order a fourth. The Miami-based cruise ship company said it had entered into an agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany to build the 4,180-passenger vessel. The sister ship to Quantum and Anthem of the Seas will be delivered in 2019, three years after Ovation of the Seas joins the fleet of Royal Caribbean International. Richard D. Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas is expected to debut in 2016 and will be the world's largest cruise ship.

31st Edition of Cruise Shipping Miami

Cruise Shipping Miami 2015 is gearing up to offer the most comprehensive and robust roster of panel discussions featuring the industry's most knowledgeable and experienced executives. The panels will be grouped under several broad themes based on industry trends during the four-day conference. The 31st edition of Cruise Shipping Miami is scheduled for March 16-19 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Organized by UBM Connect, thematic topics include The Geography of Cruise Tourism, Safety and Ship Operations, Market Segments and Cruise Product Development. On Tuesday morning, March 17, the conference will open with the popular State of the Industry session. Participants in that plenary session will be announced in the coming weeks. Carnival Cruise Ships to Revisit Mazatlan

Mexico's Mazatlan Hotel Association, informs that Carnival Cruise Lines will resume service to the destination with year-round cruises departing out of Los Angeles. "The inclusion of Mazatlan, or the 'Pearl of the Pacific,' in major cruise line offerings is a major achievement for the destination and we are thrilled to have Carnival back," said Frank Cordova, Secretary of Tourism for the region. The port says that In addition to Carnival, four major cruise lines either currently service or plan to service the destination. Harris CapRock Fulfill Major Cruise Line Satcom Contract

Harris CapRock has completed fleet installation of its managed communications solutions onboard 33 Royal Caribbean Cruise vessels. Since the start of the project, the company has removed 48 legacy antennas, installed 86 new ones in ports all around the world and procured more than 59,000 individual components for the project. Harris CapRock has developed a new “card-less” crew-calling kiosk and voice platform which the Royal Caribbean crew has used to make more than three million calls totalling more than 24 million minutes to date. •    New systems significantly improve voice, video and data services. •    Solution includes 24/7 proactive monitoring and support from Harris CapRock’s global Customer Support Centers.

Cruise Ship 'Azamara Quest' Reaches Port after Fire

The Azamara Quest drifted off the southern Philippines with 1,000 people aboard after flames engulfed one of its engine rooms, injuring five crew members. Propulsion was restored by ship's engineers a day later and she limped in at maximum speed 6 kts to the harbor of Sandakan city in Malaysia's eastern state of Sabah on Borneo island, according to the Jakarta Post newspaper. The fire on the Azamara Quest had been extinguished immediately, but five crew members suffered smoke inhalation, including one who was seriously injured and needed hospital care, the ship's operator has said.

Wärtsilä Signs Support Agreement with Royal Caribbean

Wärtsilä has signed a five year maintenance support agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. It is a joint co-operation between Wärtsilä and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and its operating companies Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Azamara Club Cruises. The maintenance support agreement contains a wide range of services, including maintenance planning, spare parts logistics optimization, the development and testing of engine components, fuel consumption optimization, as well as an advisory service for overhauls and workshop services.
