Carnival Signs 15-year Service Deal with ABB

Viking Line's flagship Viking Glory was floated out from its building dock at XSI Shipyard in Xiamen, China, on Tuesday.The new 222.6-meter, 63,800gt ro-pax vessel is due to enter service on the Stockholm-Åland-Turku route in early 2022. Virgin Picks ABB Power for Cruise Ships

Virgin Voyages has reportedly selected ABB Azipods to drive a trio of cruise ship newbuilds currently being built in Italy at Fincantieri's shipyard in Genoa. The 110,000 gt vessels, each measure 278 x 38 m and accomodating 2700 passengers and 1,150 crew, with the first due for delivery in 2020, the last in 2021. ABB is tasked to supply the complete electric power and propulsion package for the Virgin Voyages’ new fleet. Each oship will feature ABB’s Azipod propulsion, a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull.

ABB Propulsion, Automation and Software for Five Cruise Ships

ABB will supply the complete power, propulsion and automation package for a series of new cruise vessels being built by MV WERFTEN for Genting Hong Kong brands Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises. The three Crystal Cruises’ luxury “Endeavor Class” mega-yachts will feature a Polar Class 6 and enable cruising in the Arctic; then follow the route of migrating whales along the coast of the Americas and Europe to Antarctica during winter. The Star Cruises “Global Class” vessels will be two of the largest on the market with 204,000 tons registered tonnage each.

The Attractions of Azipod Propulsion

Destined for installation on board one of the highest profile cruise ship deliveries scheduled for 2016, the latest Azipod XO podded propulsion recently departed from the ABB factory in Helsinki. The unit, which commands 20.5 MW of power, has been transfered from ABB’s Vuosaari Harbour plant to the dockside for loading, bound for Meyer Werft, Papenburg. It will be installed on one of two newbuildings due for delivery from the German yard in fall 2016. ABB is delivering the complete electrical power plant and propulsion systems for the two new cruise ships.

ABB Azipod Propulsion for Carnival’s New Ships

Power and automation technology group ABB announced it has won a repeat order worth $60 million to deliver complete electrical power plants and Azipod XO fuel-saving electric propulsion systems for Carnival Corporation’s two new cruise vessels. The order, which was booked in the second quarter of 2015, will also see ABB deliver generators, main switchboards, a remote control system and distribution transformers. The ships, to be built by Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, will sail under Carnival Corporation’s brands Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line. The new vessel for Holland America Line will be a sister ship to Koningsdam, currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard.

ABB Wins $60m Repeat Azipod Order

Azipod XO propulsion units will power two new vessels that Meyer Werft will build for Norwegian Cruise Line. ABB has been awarded a contract worth $60 million to deliver Azipod propulsion and power systems to two Norwegian Cruise Line vessels. The Breakaway-Plus class cruise ships will be built by Meyer Werft of Germany and delivered in Q2 2018 and Q4 2019. The new 164,000 gt vessels will be equipped with ABB's Azipod XO electrical propulsion systems, which are already featured on several of Norwegian Cruise Line’s new vessels, Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway as well as the larger Breakaway-Plus class ships, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, currently under construction at Meyer Werft. ABB will also deliver complete electric power plants, generators and drives to the ships.

ABB Wins Orders for Star Cruises Ships

ABB has won orders worth $60 million to deliver complete electrical power plant and propulsion systems for two new vessels for Star Cruises operated by Genting HongKong and to be built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The orders were booked during 2014. ABB will supply complete electrical systems for the new vessels, including power generation and distribution systems and thruster motors, as well as its latest-generation Azipod XO propulsion system, commanding power output of 20.5 megawatts (MW). ABB said its energy efficient Azipod propulsion uses less fuel than traditional systems, provides greater maneuverability in all operating conditions, and will contribute to optimized vessel performance and a high level of passenger comfort and safety.

ABB Reports $180 Million from Cruise Builders in 2013

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, won orders worth $180 million in 2013 to deliver complete electrical power plants and propulsion systems for six new cruise liners that include its latest-generation Azipod XO units. The orders make 2013 the best-ever year for ABB in cruise liners with the Azipod system. The six ships include two for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), two for Royal Caribbean International and one each for Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Lines, all leading brands in the cruise market. The orders were booked over the course of the year, with about $30 million in the first quarter, about $90 million in the second, about $30 million in the third, and the remaining $30 million in the fourth.

The company won orders worth $180 million in 2013 to deliver complete electrical power plants and propulsion systems for six new cruise liners that include its latest-generation Azipod XO units.The six ships include two for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), two for Royal Caribbean International and one each for Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Lines. Azipod is an electric propulsion unit, which is housed in a submerged pod outside the ship hull.

ABB wins the awsrd for product design of the Azimutn lever that steers its Azipod XO marine propulsion unit. An international panel of 37 experts assessed products submitted by more than 1,800 manufacturers, designers and architects from 54 countries, evaluating the degree of innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics, durability and ecological compatibility. “The new lever design was conceived in order to improve usability and ergonomics and thereby enhance safety levels,” said Heikki Soljama, head of ABB’s Marine and Cranes business.

Zurich, Switzerland – ABB has won orders worth more than $60 million to provide complete power and Azipod ® propulsion systems for two new cruise ships, to be built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL). The ABB order for the first ship was booked in 2011 and for the second vessel  in the first quarter of 2012. The new ships are the first vessels in Royal Caribbean’s new class of cruise ships, currently named “Project Sunshine.” The 158,000-gt ships will have a capacity of more than 4,100 passengers.

ABB, a power and automation technology group, has announced that recent modifications to its Azipod propulsion unit fr ame design have seen hydrodynamic efficiency improved by more than two percent. The modifications include a newly optimized Azipod fin shape and a new pod cap structure, called Xtail. The revised fin structure receives water flow from the propeller at a new, less acute angle, and its new curved design redirects the flow more efficiently.
