RWE, CapeOmega, Neptune Energy to Explore Shipping CO2 to Offshore Storage

CapeOmega and Neptune Energy on Wednesday announced NoordKaap, a project concept for a cross-border CO₂ storage solution for industrial emitters across Europe. According to Neptune Energy, NoordKaap would involve transporting CO2 via vessels suitable for directly injecting the CO₂ at offshore locations and for terminal offloading. The two companies have signed a letter of intent with RWE to assess the possibility of shipping "green CO2" from RWE's biomass Eemshaven facility for offshore storage in the Dutch North Sea…

Wind Farm Fryslân Reaches Financial Close

Ten banks and the province of Fryslân are jointly financing the 382.7MW Windpark Fryslân, which is being built in the Dutch IJsselmeer, south of the Afsluitdijk, six kilometers off the Frisian coast.The near shore windpark is being built by Zuiderzeewind, a consortium of Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.According to Van Oord, the preparatory work has already begun. London Thamesport Boosts Short Sea Capacity

Dutch-based transport company A2B-online Container B.V. has added a fourth weekly sailing on its service between Hutchison Ports London Thamesport and Moerdijk in The Netherlands. The new sailing is inaugurated today (18 April 2018) by the first call of the m.s. A2B Spirit (ex-Norfeeder), a Sietas 151 type 508 TEU container ship, the fourth of this class owned and operated by A2B. A2B-online Container Ships Use Biofuels, Big Data to Cut CO2

A2B-online Container, GoodFuels Marine and We4Sea launch a collaboration project with the aim to reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO2-emissions for two A2B-online ships. Big Data technology is used to map the possibilities for more efficient shipping operations. The cost efficiencies achieved by reduced levels of fuel consumption will subsequently be used to deploy advanced, sustainable biofuels, by which the CO2-emissions will further decrease. A2B-online Container B.V. offers reliable short-sea services from the port of Moerdijk to several ports in the UK. This collaboration project is in line with A2B-online’s ambition to further improve the emission performance of her ships.

New Briese Vessels Sport Schottel Propulsion

Briese Group contracted Groot Ship Design to deliver the design and basic engineering package for four multi-purpose vessels. Schottel performed enhanced CFD investigations to determine the optimal aftship configuration incorporating nozzle support and streamline body between rudder and hull. As a result, a streamlined CPP installation will enable a power reduction of 3.7 percent. The vessels feature an open and closed top design for variable cargo purposes. VFD Controlled Pumps Help Keep Barges Afloat

Optidrive E3 variable frequency drives (VFDs) from Invertek Drives have completely automated the control of pumps used to fill and empty ballast tanks on board commercial barges in the Netherlands. As well as a faster and more reliable filling and emptying process, operators of commercial vessels that use VFD controlled ballast pumps also benefit from less fuel and energy consumption, which also saves money. Algerian Dredger Revitalized

Damen delivered and installed a new main engine for the stationary dredger RezougYoucef. The cutter suction dredger has been built by De Groot Nijkerk in 1988. It has worked in an Algerian reservoir for quite a while and badly needed an engine overhaul. The entire job has been successfully completed locally by a Damen Field Service Engineer and the crew. TheRezougYoucef is a cutter suction dredger with a discharge pipe diameter of 650 mm. It was built by De Groot Nijkerk in 1988 for a Dutch dredging contractor named HAM for a large Tunisian job. The former De Groot Nijkerk now is part of the Damen Group under the name “Damen Dredging Equipment”; therefore all as-built drawings were available.

Huisman to Build World’s Largest Cranes

Huisman, the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, has received a Letter of Intent for the delivery of world’s largest cranes onboardHeerema’s planned new semi-submersible crane vessel.The cranes will have a lifting capacity of 10.000mt at a radius of 48m. Huisman is known for its signature mast crane design. These cranes will however be tub mounted. The two cranes will be built by the Huisman production facility in China. The final decision to build this new semi-submersible crane vessel will be made by Heerema before the end of this year.

GL Completes EEDI Certification

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) presented Carisbrooke Shipping with energy efficiency design index (EEDI) certificates for four low emission dry cargo vessels. Built by Chinese shipyard Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, the four 8500 DWT sister vessels, the Vectis Eagle, Falcon, Harrier and Osprey incorporate a number of innovative features, including the distinctive Groot Cross-Bow(r). The four vessels, which have been built to Finnish Swedish Iceclass 1A, have been designed and constructed to optimize energy efficiency in almost every facet of operation.

Groot Ship Design's wins contract for two types of special livestock carrying ships from Malaysian company PBHH (Pembangunan Buka Jijau Holdings Sdn. The contract is for the design and delivery of two types of livestock carriers. Of each type the Korean shipyard, Sundong will build 5 vessels for PBHH/BH Livestock. Sungdong requested Groot Ship Design to deliver the design for each type because of its knowledge and experience in livestock carriers and its innovating bow design – the Groot Cross-Bow©.

Groot Ship Design Signs Contract with Sundong

On May 15, 2012 at Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) a unique contract was signed between Groot Ship Design from Leek (the Netherlands), Sundong shipyard (Korea) and owner PBHH/BH livestock Vessel SDN BHD (Malaysia) for the design and delivery of two types of livestock carriers. Chinese Yard Launches SUPER GREEN 8500 for Carisbrooke

On Monday September 26, the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. will launch Yno YZJ2010-931, the first vessel of the ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’ type for Carisbrooke Shipping. With this vessel the yard is the first Chinese shipyard launching a vessel with a Groot Cross-Bow®. Despite the economical difficult times more vessels with a Groot Cross-Bow® are under construction at the moment. The Dutch naval architect, Groot Ship Design, designed for Dutch / British Carisbrooke Shipping an innovating multipurpose cargo vessel, the 8500 dwt ‘SUPER GREEN 8500’.

The Dordrecht Fleet Continues Growth

The Dutch town of Dordrecht was granted city rights in 1220 as its importance as a trading port continued to grow. Goods from the Dutch empire were transferred to river vessels here and the city grew wealthy. Later, much of the deep-sea trade moved to the nearby port of Rotterdam which resulted in heavy bombing during World War II with the destruction of many historical buildings. Spared such destruction, Dordrecht continues to have many fine buildings dating from the prosperous centuries.

After Treatment: Taking Emissions Down Another Notch

Engine manufacturers and their engineer teams have put a great deal of thought and money into reducing emissions in recent years. As limitations, particularly in the U.S. and Europe became more stringent, the engineers tuned the engine design with everything from electronic injectors to redesigned combustion chambers. Further mandated reductions in emissions are anticipated. Some operators are not waiting for the regulations but are going to the next level with the aid of independent suppliers. The diesel-electric Stril Mariner is a good example.

Geest North Sea Line Strengthens Sales Team

European intermodal operator Geest North Sea Line strengthened its sales team in Germany. Jürgen Reinke has been promoted to the position of General Sales Manager for Germany and will be based in Geest's Duisburg office effective 1 April, 2004, and Frank Possel has been appointed as Regional Account Manager, located in Hamburg. Reinke joined Geest in 2002 as Regional Account Manager for the Ruhr area. His early career was in the Hamburg freight forwarding community followed by sales positions with RoRo ferry and trailer operators PTI Portbridge, Norfolkline and DFDS. Possel has joined Geest from Seawheel. "Central and Southern Germany, especially the Ruhr region, have always been important markets for Geest but we now find that we are increasingly competitive in Northern Germany too.

New Vessel Sharing Agreement for Iberia

Geest North Sea Line, together with its Spanish partner Odiel Bilbao SA, announced more details relating to their new shortsea joint venture, first made public in mid November. The two companies have entered into a vessel sharing agreement with feeder specialist X-Press Container Line to provide twice-weekly sailings between Bilbao, London (Tilbury) and Rotterdam, commencing January 2, 2004. Sailings will be offered from Bilbao every Wednesday and Friday. The mid-week sailing arrives Tilbury on Saturday allowing UK deliveries on Monday while the Friday sailing arrives Monday evening to allow Tuesday deliveries. Departures are every Sunday and Tuesday.

Dutch Vessels Set Standard

Following in a long tradition, the shipyards of the Netherlands continue to produce immaculate inland river vessels. In recent years these have tended to be built on hulls shipped from the cost-effective shipyards of China to be finished to the highest standards in Dutch shipyards. Last year, the shipyard of De Groot in Dordrecht completed the MS Elja-V for Ellie and Jacob Van der Vlag. With 35 years sailing together this is the couples sixth vessel with the name Elja-V. At 360.8 ft in length the new vessel has the standard 37.5 ft beam for navigation on the Rhine, Mains and Danube.
