Ramping up Warship Production, Shipbuilder to Add 1000 Jobs

Babcock International Group (Babcock) is creating more than 1,000 new jobs at its large-scale, advanced manufacturing and shipbuilding facility in Rosyth.The new job opportunities will include 400 apprenticeships, 350 production support operatives, skilled engineers, tradespeople, and graduates to support programs like the Type 31 frigate design and build."Attracting and retaining talent is essential to the future success of our business and directly benefits the local communities in which we operate," said David Lockwood, Chief Executive, Babcock International Group.

Babcock Tallies Contract to Refit UK Nuclear Submarine

Babcock International Group and the UK’s Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) have agreed a full cost recovery contract worth an estimated £560 million to undertake the planned deep maintenance and life extension program for HMS Victorious, one of the UK’s Vanguard Class nuclear submarines.The multi-year life extension program will deliver HMS Victorious back to the Royal Navy modernized and improved, enabling it to continue operational patrols well into the 2030s. Babcock and HII Team to Support AUKUS Nuclear Submarine Program in Australia

SES Supports Medical Ship Project in Peru

In support of the Vine Trusts’ latest project in the Peruvian Amazon, Ships Electronic Services (SES) will provide and install a comprehensive navigation and communications system aboard the Trusts’ new medical ship MV Forth Hope. Built by David Abels in Bristol the 35 meter vessel has been fitted out to the Trusts’ specification by Babcock International Group in Rosyth and will now be completed with a sophisticated electronics navigation and communication system developed by SES for her departure in the first half of July.

Bernhard Schulte, Babcock Team-up to develop GSV Vessel

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), a leading global maritime services company, and Babcock International Group, the UK’s leading engineering support services company, are collaborating to develop a ground-breaking Gas Supply Vessel (GSV). The 7,500m³ vessel, which will be used for the LNG fuelling of ships, including ferries, containers, cruise vessels and other shore-based gas consumers in the Baltic Sea, is the first vessel of its kind to utilise Babcock’s market leading FGSV0 technology. BSM and Babcock have developed the patent pending FGSV0 technology to deliver LNG from the GSV into the receiving vessel with zero emissions to the environment during normal operations, greatly minimising environmental impact.

ExxonMobil Inks Deal to Collaborate on Caledonia LNG Project

ExxonMobil, Babcock International Group, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), Calor and Orkney Islands Council have signed an agreement to collaborate in the “Caledonia LNG ” project. The aim is to develop the infrastructure, storage and technical support needed to enable safe liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations for customers in the north of the UK and North Sea, including bunkering. The parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 22 November to investigate opportunities to supply LNG for marine and land-based applications. ExxonMobil will explore the potential for its global marine network to deliver LNG bunker fuel to customers in the region as well as providing technical support and expertise to enable safe LNG bunkering operations.

As in previous years, the meeting took place in Arlington, near Washington DC, on March 2 and 3. The event brings together a large number of military shipyards and related companies from across North America, as they gather to learn about the sector’s new developments in both the technical presentations and the exhibition area.

Babcock LGE Process Secures Namura Contract

As part of its growing network of global partnerships, Babcock LGE, a wholly owned Engineering, Procurement and Project Management business of Babcock International Group, has secured a contract to design; supply and project manage the installation of a cargo handling system for a 38,000cbm Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) ship at Namura Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in Imari, Japan. Based in Edinburgh, this is LGE’s sixth contract with Japanese Shipbuilding business Namura, the contract marks Namura’s strategic return to the gas transportation market since the mid 2000s. Babcock LGE has  delivered many similar projects of varying sizes and plan to continue this success in a prosperous LPG market.

Pressure for Australia Sub Deal Grows

Australia to spend A$65 bln on ships and subs over 20 years; PM pledges A$40 bln for domestic shipbuilders. Australia will spend A$89 billion ($65 billion) on ships and submarines for its navy over the next 20 years but pressure grew on Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday to spend more than half that total building a new submarine fleet domestically. Two naval shipbuilding programmes, the A$20 billion SEA5000 Future Frigate project and the SEA1180 Offshore Patrol Vessels, would be brought forward to guarantee the continuous domestic construction of surface warships, Abbott said. Archie Bethel, CBE, has succeeded Alan Johnston, CBE, as Honorary President of the Society of Maritime Industries at the Society’s Board meeting today. Archie Bethel is Divisional Chief Executive of Babcock International Group plc’s marine and technology division. In welcoming Bethel to his role, the Society’s Chairman, Peter French said “I am delighted Archie has agreed to be our President. Bethel joined Babcock in January 2004 and was appointed Chief Executive of Marine on its formation in mid June 2007.

Britain to Sign Contract for New Aircraft Carriers

Britain is set to sign a long-awaited $7.8b deal to build two aircraft carriers, which will be the Royal Navy's largest ever ships and are set for 50 years of service. The 65,000-ton carriers are said to be called Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales and will enter service in 2014 and 2016. The manufacturing contract is going to a consortium that includes a shipbuilding joint venture being set up between two British companies, BAE Systems and VT Group. Other members include Britain's Babcock International Group and France's Thales, which designed the ships. Final signing of the contract had been expected earlier this year but was delayed. The new carriers will be much smaller than their U.S.

Ferry Builder Bought

Babcock International Group Plc unit Babcock Engineering Services said it has bought high-speed ferry manufacturer FBM Marine Holdings (UK) Ltd from the Hong Kong Parkview Group. The name of FBM will reportedly be changed to FBM Babcock Marine Ltd.
