MOL Readies 'Ballast Catch'

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)  announced that the "Ballast Catch" = Viable Organism Sampler will begin marketing on May 15.The device, jointly developed by MOL Group company MOL Engineering and Satake Corporation, saves workload in preparing samples of ballast water prior to testing for the presence of marine organisms. Another MOL Group company, MOL Techno-Trade will handle sales of "Ballast Catch".Satake  developed the "Ballast Eye" =Viable Organism Analyzer, inspection system to determine how many living organisms are contained in a vessel's ballast water, in response to stricter regulations set out in "International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediments…

Coast Guard, Partners Stop Multiple Smuggling Events off Puerto Rico

The Coast Guard interdicted a vessel, Monday, with 35 Dominican migrants and 4 kilograms of heroin approximately 34 miles west of Desecheo, Puerto Rico.The crew of a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry, deployed to Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, detected the vessel Monday evening. Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector San Juan diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Heriberto Hernandez (WPC-1114), who arrived on scene, embarked the 35 migrants and discovered a backpack…

CEVA Airlifts Supplies to W. Africa for Ebola Response

CEVA Logistics - one of the world's leading supply chain management companies – airlifted  more than 70 tonnes  of urgent supplies to Monrovia, Liberia on October 10th to assist in ongoing efforts to combat the West Africa Ebola outbreak. The airlift was chartered by the U.S. Agency for International Development—the lead government agency coordinating U.S. Ebola response efforts—which has been working to expand the pipeline of medical equipment and supplies to the region. Included in the shipment were infrared thermometers, disinfectant backpack sprayers, tents, and plastic fencing to be used in the construction of Ebola treatment units. The supplies were sourced by USAID from multiple locations around the world and delivered to CEVA Charter Services at Liege Airport (LGG) in Belgium.

Simrad Launches New ECDIS

A new, fully IMO certified Integrated Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) navigation system has been announced today, the Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS, designed specifically for the commercial market. The Simrad CS68 Integrated ECDIS system offers direct access to key dedicated navigation capabilities. Installation and customization options are virtually endless, depending on the particular configuration of a vessel. Available in two screen sizes, the CS68 19-inch model has a 5:4 aspect ratio for streamlined retrofitting.

SpotterRF Radar Selected by DOD for Capability Demo

SpotterRF was one of 15 industry partners selected to participate in a Department of Defense (DOD) demonstration seeking cutting edge technologies with high potential of improving the warfighter's mission effectiveness and survivability. The Stiletto Maritime Demonstration Program conducted its first capability demonstration, Jan. 14-27, 2013 for the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA. This capability demonstration allowed SpotterRF to receive immediate feedback on the radar system as NECC Sailors observed the new technology in a realistic military maritime environment. During the course of the demonstration several scenarios were run in which vessels ranging from a jet ski to an 11 meter RHIB traveled different paths into and around the Harbor.

The Series 1300 offers the same legendary high standards of reliability and durability as its predecessor, the Series 60, with improved emissions technology and load performance. The Series 1300 offers a power range from 350-470 brake horsepower (bhp). The new Auxiliary Generator Package powered by the MTU 8V 1600 engine, designed to provide electrical power to drill rig operations. MTU’s new Backpack product, which is an optional, pre-engineered air filtration/cleaner and exhaust mounting system that provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with greater ease of installation.

L-3 Norovirus Decontamination Backpack

L-3 Applied Technologies, a division of L-3 Communications, introduced a backpack concept of its SteraMist decontamination system on March 16 at the 2009 Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami Conference and Trade Show. SteraMist, originally designed for microbiological disinfection in hospitals, pharmaceutical, tissue bank and other health care facilities, is now available in a mobile unit suited to norovirus decontamination aboard cruise ships. The L-3 Applied Technologies business, based in San Diego, Calif., is focused on advanced technology sterilization, high energy and survivability solutions for both military and commercial applications.

Ferry Service Stalls after Bomb Threat

The Canadian Press reported that travelers were stuck for hours when B.C. Ferries was forced to cancel sailings after receiving a bomb threat that police considered credible. Twenty-one sailings were cancelled and travelers were forced to wait in terminals near Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo. Passengers were confined to the terminal cafeteria before police gave them the go-ahead to leave. One ferry had already left the terminal and had to be turned back. Another ferry that was ready to depart for Schwartz Bay in Victoria was halted. All the passengers on both ships were evacuated and their vehicles searched. The big ships between Tsawwassen and Schwartz Bay carry up to 470 cars and 2,100 passengers. In the summer, ferries depart between the two terminals every hour.

DHS Awards $113min Port Security Deals

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office on awarded $113m in contracts to five companies for human portable radiation detection systems for use at the nation's ports. Human Portable Radiation Detection Systems (HPRDS) program contracts will be awarded to Ametec AMT of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Science Application International Corporation of San Diego Calif., Sanmina-SCI of Huntsville, Ala., Target Instruments, Inc. of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Smiths Detection Inc. of Pine Brook, N.J. DNDO anticipates purchasing and deploying roughly 1,000 next generation handheld systems and 200 backpack systems through the HPRDS program. The portable technology will be used primarily by U.S.

Oceaneering Utilizes VitalLink 1200

Oceaneering International Inc recently purchased VitalLink 1200, the latest in medical technology from TeleMedic Systems for use in remote medical emergencies. VitalLink has been installed on board FPSO Ocean Producer providing the crew with access to 24 hour a day medical advice from International SOS, the world’s largest medical and security assistance company. VitalLink 1200, packaged in a ruggedised water resistant portable backpack, has been specifically designed for the non-medically trained operator. Should a worker on the Ocean Producer become sick or injured, the unit is activated, and voice prompts and on-screen instructions guide the operator through the attachment of simply designed medical leads to the patient.

Michael Carthew, President, Chevron Texaco Shipping and Dean Taylor, President and CEO, Tidewater Marine were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. Edwin W. Stephan, a founder and former longtime president and vice chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will retire from the Board of Directors following the company's May 20 annual meeting in Miami.
