BAE Systems Wins $11.3M Navy Deal

BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Mayport, Mayport, Florida, is being awarded an $11,351,440 cost-plus-award-fee modification to previously awarded contract N00024-16-C-2302 to exercise the option for post shakedown availability (PSA) accomplishment for USS Detroit (LCS 7). The PSA is accomplished within a period of approximately 10-16 weeks between the time of ship custody transfer to the Navy and the Shipbuilding and Conversion, Navy obligation work limiting date. The PSA encompasses all of the manpower, support services, material, non-standard equipment and associated technical data and documentation required to prepare for and accomplish the PSA.

BAE Systems Awarded Two Navy Contract Modifications

1. BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida, is being awarded an $54,698,937 modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-10-C-4406) for a Docking Selected Restricted Availability to include structural work and extensive repairs and maintenance onboard USS Gettysburg (CG-64). This availability includes hull, machinery, electrical, electronics, ship alterations, and piping alteration and repair work. Work will be performed in Jacksonville, Florida, and is expected to be completed by April 2015. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Navy) funding in the amount of $32,914,644 will be obligated at time of award. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

NSRP Awards $3.3M for Shipbuilding R&D

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected four major research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U. S. shipbuilding and ship repair. Objective: Expanding upon the successfully completed Remote Climbing Robot and the current Mobile Robotic Manufacturing System, the objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate a High Mobility Manufacturing Robot capable of operating in ship compartments. Distortion Control "Tool Box" for Lightweight Ship Structures Workshop

This project compiles the physics and principles associated with distortion control derived from previous research and converts this knowledge base into a sequenced set of tangible, “shipyard friendly” implementation solutions designed to optimize several shipyard models. Distortion control modules will be designed and implemented to reduce the production rework associated with construction of lightweight ship structures. These modules will address the major sources of distortion, to include the welding and material handling processes. This project raises the technology readiness level of distortion control techniques to enable shipyard implementation.

Latest DofD Navy Contracts

BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama LLC, Mobile, Ala., is being awarded a $32,946,457 firm-fixed-price contract for the regular maintenance and overhaul of USNS Supply (T-AOE 6). This contract includes two additional options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the contract to $42,499,988. Work will be performed in Mobile, Ala., and is expected to be completed by October 2014. Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $23,124,445 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-12-C-2313) to exercise options for DDG 51 class lead yard services.

BAE Yards Busy with PSV Newbuilds, Ship Repairs

BAE Systems’ Mobile shipyard is adjacent to the 42 foot deep ship channel on Mobile Bay with direct access to and from the GOM.

BAE Systems continues to support the offshore energy market as it expands new construction efforts and maintenance, repair, overhaul and conversion operations at its shipyards in Mobile, Ala., and Jacksonville, Fla. Earlier this year, BAE Systems began construction on the first of two platform supply vessels for GulfMark Americas, Inc. The 300-Class DP2 vessels are designed by MMC Ship Design and Marine Consulting, Ltd. of Poland and will be based on similar platform supply vessels currently under construction for GulfMark abroad. BAE Systems to Build More Jackson Offshore PSV's

BAE Systems’ shipyard in Florida to build two additional platform supply vessels (PSV's) for Jackson Offshore Operators under a contract option. The new vessels, which will service offshore drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico, reflect BAE Systems’ continued growth in U.S. commercial shipbuilding and its support to the oil and gas industry. Each of the Jackson Offshore Operators vessels will be qualified under the U.S. Jones Act and will measure 252 feet long and 60 feet wide.

American Phoenix

BAE Systems joined with Mid Ocean Tanker Company (MOTC), Mid Ocean Marine and Alterna Captial Partners earlier this year to commission the American Phoenix, a U.S. Flag/Jones Act-qualified product-chemical tanker. Measuring 616 x 105 ft. with a laden draft of 36 ft. and a cargo capacity of 49,000 dwt, American Phoenix is the largest vessel ever built and launched in the State of Alabama. BAE Systems was contracted to complete construction of the American Phoenix and prepare it for use. The vessel is owned by MOTC, a joint venture between Mid Ocean Marine and private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners. The vessel will conduct trade initially in the Gulf of Mexico.

BAE Systems Lays Keel for Dump Scow

BAE Systems has completed another milestone in the construction of the first of two dump scows for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company. When complete, both vessels will be used to support dredging operations in the United States. Employees and executives from both companies recently gathered at the foot of the 98 ton keel block as Steve Becker, vice president of Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, drove the ceremonial wedge and welded his initials in the keel of the first vessel, Hull 107.

BAE Systems Starts Construction on Dump

BAE Systems has begun construction on the first of two dump scows for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company. Employees and executives from both companies gathered yesterday for a ceremony to mark the start of construction for the first module, which will weigh approximately 87 tons. When complete, the entire first vessel will weigh about 1,600 tons and measure 295 feet long and 62 feet wide, with a draft of 17 feet. The second vessel, which is scheduled to start in January, will be of the same dimensions and capacity. Both 7,500-cubic-yard, split bottom dump scows will be used to support U.S.

RESOLVE Engineering Group, LLC has announced the launch of two of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering firm’s latest design and construction support jobs. The American Phoenix, a 616’ x 105’ chemical tanker was built by BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards, Alabama for owner Mid-Ocean Tanker Company LLC of South Norwalk, CT. RESOLVE provided construction support for the owner during final outfitting and completion of the American Phoenix 49,000 DWT Tanker which is the largest vessel ever built in Alabama.

BAE Alabama Wins Dredger Barge Contracts

BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama wins Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. The announcement came at the christening of the American Phoenix, a 616-foot-long, 105-foot-wide chemical tanker that BAE built for owner Mid-Ocean Tanker Company LLC of South Norwalk, Conn., a joint venture between private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners and Mid-Ocean Marine, a shipping company also based in South Norwalk. BAE Commences Construction of Hopper Dredge

Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel.

BAE Systems has begun construction on the MV Magdalen, an 8,500 cubic yard capacity trailing suction hopper dredge for Weeks Marine, Inc. Executives from the two companies gathered this week at the BAE Systems Mobile shipyard to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which will weigh 130 tons. When complete in 2014, the entire vessel will measure 340 feet long and 79 feet wide, with a draft of 27 feet. “A tremendous amount of effort has led us to this point,” said Vic Rhoades, director and general manager at BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama.

Maintenance and Repair Complete on Sea Fighter

Austal USA, in conjunction with prime contractor, BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama, has completed a four-month drydock and shipyard availability for the Sea Fighter (FSF-1), based out of Panama City, Florida. The Sea Fighter is an aluminum catamaran, operated by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) that has been used to test technologies for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programs. Under a very aggressive schedule, Austal workers installed a new Counter Measure Washdown (CMWD) System to help keep future Naval combatants operational in a nuclear, biological or chemical battle-space. Other Austal work items included the modification of ballast tanks and the installation of water jet skirts on both hulls.

ShipConstructor: Part of $1.4m NSRP Research Project

ShipConstructor Software Inc. (SSI) continues to expand its involvement in the US National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), created to advance technology and help shipbuilders increase efficiency. Alongside six other industry partners, SSI USA will participate in a $1.4 million project entitled “Production Planning Integration with CAD” whose objective is to “decrease man-hours and eliminate errors by automating the data exchange from a Product Data Model or Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) model into a Production Planning System.” This project will leverage work done on a previous NSRP “Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Integration with CAD” project.

USDOT’s Maritime Administration Announces $9.98 Million in Grants to Small Shipyards

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced $9.98 million in grants to 13 small shipyards throughout the United States to help modernize facilities, increase productivity, and help make the country’s small shipyards more competitive in the global marketplace. Over 50,000 Americans are employed by small shipyards in more than 30 states. The facilities vary in size, from family-owned businesses employing a few dozen workers to state-of-the-art facilities with hundreds of employees. “These grants will help improve our ability to build and repair ships in the United States, strengthening our economy and helping position these small businesses and shipyard workers to be better prepared to win the future,” said Secretary LaHood.

BAE Mobile Yard Wins Dredge Contract

BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards Alabama has been selected by Weeks Marine, Inc. to build an 8,500 cubic yard capacity twin screw trailing suction hopper dredge at its Mobile, Alabama facility. Upon completion, dimensions of the vessel will be 356-feet long, 79-feet wide with a draft of 27 feet. Weeks Marine, Inc., which has its dredging headquarters in Covington, Louisiana, is one of the largest providers of dredging services in the United States. This will be a state-of-the art trailing suction hopper dredge and the first designed by IHC Merwede to be built in the United States. IHC Merwede, located in The Netherlands, is a world leader in the design and construction of advanced dredging equipment.

NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. Austal Secures Navy Maintenance Work

Demonstrating its growing presence in the defence and vessel support markets, Austal’s US operation has been awarded a subcontract by BAE Systems to provide structural maintenance services for “Sea Fighter” (FSF-1), a US Navy Research Vessel which is used for advanced technology demonstrations. The vessel is a 79.9 metre high-speed aluminium catamaran, designed to operate at speeds in excess of 50 knots. It is operated by Great Eastern Group for the Office of Naval Research. Austal’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Bellamy, said the contract was in line with key company strategies to expand its defence and vessel support businesses. “This contract is further recognition from the defence community that our core skills add value in the in-service support phase.
