UK Shipyard Orders Second Tube Bender

A second state-of-the-art tube bending machine has been ordered by BAE Systems Submarine Solutions to support the construction of the UK's Astute class nuclear-powered submarines. The new tube bending machine is an all-electric model with precision software-controlled servomotor movement, for bending tube diameters up to 76 mm. It also features an advanced laser measurement system that monitors any deviations to the programmed bend caused by the tubing material's 'springback' characteristics, and then automatically adjusts the bend to produce the correct shape. These features equip BAE Systems to handle the very demanding workload of the Astute submarine program.

Paramarine advanced marine design software by QinetiQ GRC is being used by BAE Systems to design Astute the new class of nuclear submarines for the royal navy. The design and construction of BAE Systems’ Astute Class is an extremely challenging engineering project. Once deployed, Astute is designed to require no refuelling throughout her full service life, in excess of 25 years, and can patrol for 90 days remaining undetected thousands of miles from home and hundreds of metres underwater.

Sener Wins BAE Contract

Sener Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A closed a contract with UK-based BAE Systems PLC for the license to use the FORAN CAD/CAM System in its shipbuilding activities. According to the contract, FORAN can be implemented in any BAE Systems Group company, any member of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance as well as in any subcontractor of the above companies. FORAN is currently implemented at the following BAE Systems Group companies: - BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, Barrow-in-Furness - BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions Limited, Scotstoun, Glasgow As a first result of the contract, about 200 licences have been installed at both sites. These licenses are currently being used for developing the different stages of the CVF project as well as for internal training.
