USCG's Dorian Response in Bahamas Continues

USCG Rescue 2 on Bahamian Island
Two stranded men are safe after the Coast Guard rescued them off an Island in the Bahamas Tuesday afternoon. Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received a request for assistance from the Royal Bahamian Defense Force to rescue two U.S. citizens from a remote island. The men were ferrying the motor vessel Bye-Luv Ya-Sea Ya from Turks and Caicos to Fort Pierce, Florida, when the vessel began taking on water and eventually ran aground on Lady Slipper Key, just north of Crooked Island, Bahamas. A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew forward deployed in the Bahamas arrived on scene, landed, and took the two men safely aboard. Once aboard the Jayhawk helicopter, the men were transported to Great Inagua, Bahamas. No medical concerns were reported.
USCG Rescues 164 Migrants in a Week
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rescued 64 Cuban migrants and 100 Haitian migrants during a busy week of illegal maritime migration attempts from Cuba and Haiti into the United States. The 64 Cuban migrants were repatriated last week following three separate interdictions at sea in the Florida Straits dating back to August 7. Coast Guard, RBDF Assist Haitians Clinging to Capsized Freighter
At least 10 Haitian migrants are reported dead and approximately 100 are being rescued by Coast Guard and Royal Bahamian Defense Force rescue crews 15 nautical miles southwest of Staniel Cay, Bahamas, Tuesday. More than 100 Haitian migrants fell into the water Monday night when their overloaded sail freighter grounded and capsized off coast of Staniel Cay. The incident was reported by the Royal Bahamian Defense Force and relayed to Coast Guard 7th District command center watchstanders Monday evening.
Coast Guard Crew Returns After First Patrol
The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tornado returned to their homeport in Pascagoula, Miss., Sunday after completing their first patrol since the ship was commissioned in December. The cutter and its crew departed for the Florida Straits Feb. 2, patrolling between the Florida Keys and Cuba in support of counter-drug and alien migration interdiction operations. The crew put months of training to good use as they safely prevented nearly 100 migrants and several suspected smugglers from illegally entering the United States. The crew also worked closely with the Royal Bahamian Defense Force in and around the Bahamas in a joint effort to interdict migrant and drug smugglers.
Cutter Saves Lives
The Coast Guard Cutter Dauntless (WMEC-624) will arrive back in its homeport of Galveston, Wednesday morning. The cutter traveled more than 7,500 miles during a 49-day law enforcement patrol in the Caribbean Sea and the Straits of Florida. While patrolling off the coast of Key West, Fla, on July 13, the crew of the Dauntless rescued 16 Cuban migrants, who were packed onto a 20-foot open raft with a disabled engine. The Carnival Cruise Liner Imagination was first to discover the stranded migrants and immediately contacted the Coast Guard for assistance. At sunset the Dauntless arrived on scene and safely recovered the migrants. After caring and treating some of the migrants for dehydration and malnourishment, Dauntless transferred them to another U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat.
