New LNG ATB Bunker Vessel is a US First

Bunkering ports around the world have long used a variety of small tankers or tug and barge combinations to deliver fuel to visiting ships. Mostly this was heavy oil, but recently a new breed of bunkering vessels is emerging to deliver clean burning liquefied natural gas (LNG) to modern ships with dual-fuel capabilities.The fall of 2020 will see a new addition to this fleet servicing ships in Florida and the Caribbean. As an articulated tug barge (ATB) combination, the vessel will have a cargo capacity of 4,000 cubic meters of LNG.

Ballast-free LNG Carrier Project Advances

GTT, Lloyd's Register (LR) and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC) today launched the second phase of the "30,000m³ B-FREE LNG carrier" Joint Development Project (JDP). A meeting was held today at Lloyd's Register premises in Shanghai to commence Phase II of the project, and to welcome Exmar as a new partner to the JDP.The first phase of the project performed by DSIC, GTT and Lloyd's Register developed a new design of ballast-free medium-sized LNG carrier, fully compliant with the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC)…

Gibdock Completes Two Gibraltar Repair Projects

Gibdock said its Gibraltar yard has completed two projects recently  that demanded ships re-entry into service without delay. Returning customer Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (CMN) chose Gibdock’s facilities to carry an extensive package of work on its ro-ro container vessel, MN Calao, which spent 18 days in the yard last month, taking in its five-year classification survey. The 12,026 dwt, 160m long vessel, which was originally delivered by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2013, is a sister to the same owner’s MN Tangara, which was docked at Gibdock in June and July 2017. For MN Calao, Gibdock was tasked with carrying out an extensive and complex paint job, covering the underwater hull and the superstructure, including the funnel and mast areas, to return the vessel to ‘as new’ condition.

Ship Operating Costs Set to Rise -Survey

Vessel operating costs are expected to rise in both 2016 and 2017, according to the latest survey by international accountant and shipping consultant Moore Stephens. Repairs and maintenance and spares are the cost categories which are likely to increase most significantly in each of the two years. The survey is based on responses from key players in the international shipping industry, predominantly shipowners and managers in Europe and Asia. Those responses revealed that vessel operating costs are expected to rise by 1.9 percent in 2016 and by 2.5 percent in 2017.

The International Maritime Organizations 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention lays down strict guidelines for the treatment and discharge of ballast water. Already in force as of January 1, 2015 in U.S. waters, universal ratification is expected to occur during the next six months.

Cochin Builds Vard Designed PSVs

The Sea Tantalus is the first of a series of Vard Group (STX) designed platform supply vessels being built at Cochin Shipyard Ltd. in India. The distinctive hull configuration is being built in countries around the world, and the Indian version is the first of four from Cochin. At 82.2 by 17-meters the Sea Tantalus has a 7.6-meter depth at the main deck. Built to Det Norske veritas (DNV) standards, including clean notation, the new vessel employs diesel-electric propulsion. Power is provided by four 1,635 HP (12,00 kW) Cummins KTA50-DM1-powered electrical generators.

Indian Shipyard Delivers PSV Sea Tantalus

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered the high specification Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) to PSV Holding Inc., Liberia. Sea Tantalus is a PSV 05L CD type, designed by Vard Group AS, Norway, and is classed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The vessel has been assigned the "Clean Design" notation by DNV signifying the highest levels of environmental compliance, and is the first ship built by CSL to be filled with a ballast water treatment plant. BWT Company Boosts Equity

Ballast water treatment plant manfufacturers Ecochlor, Inc. announced today that it recently completed a $4.1 million equity financing to support its growth into the burgeoning ballast water treatment market. Investors participating in the financing included Sojitz Marine & Engineering Corporation, the shipping subsidiary of the Japanese trading company, Sojitz Corporation, and a number of individual investors. Sojitz invested $1.8 million. Since its formation in 2001, Ecochlor has raised over $12 million in equity. The company’s Ballast Water Treatment Systems use chlorine dioxide technology, which has been used in water treatment and industrial applications for decades, to disinfect water used as ballast on ships.

SCI Orders New Cellular Container Vessel

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) continues to modernize its fleet by acquiring new vessels. On July 14, SCI placed an order for a Cellular Container vessel of 3,500 TEU capacity, with M/s Rongcheng Shenfei Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., China. The shipyard was selected for building the vessel through competitive global tendering process. The vessel would be built to specifications complying with the latest international and national rules and regulations. This ordered vessel will be equipped with Ballast Water Treatment Plant & camless electronic Main Engines. This container vessel should be delivered to SCI in early 2013. SCI presently operates 5 container services in the Indian, European, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean sectors.
