Baltic Workboats to Build Multipurpose Vessel for Estonia's State Fleet

Baltic Workboats announced it recently signed a contract to design and construct a new multipurpose vessel for scheduled delivery to the Estonian State Fleet in 2026.The new workboat will be deployed for regular buoy tender works, maintenance of waterways, scientific research, pollution monitoring and response and search and rescue missions in Estonian waters.Notably, the vessel will be Estonia’s first 100% alternatively fueled workboat that will use sustainable biomethane as the main fuel.

Port of Klaipeda Orders Fully Electric Waste Collection Tanker

The Port of Klaipėda has placed an order worth roughly €11 million for the design and construction of a fully electric tanker that will collect waste from other vessels arriving at the port.The project marks the first large collaboration between Baltic Workboats and Western Baltija Shipbuilding, a subsidiary within BLRT Grupp. The 42-m long and 10-m wide tanker will carry up to 400 m3 of liquid waste. The vessel will have a fully electric propulsion system with 2,000 kWh of batteries installed on board, meaning she can sail at 8 knots continuously for 8 hours without charging.

Baltic Workboats to Build Autonomous Warships

A consortium led by Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats (BWB) has won a funding of 95 million euros in the European Defence Fund competition to create a new type of naval platform for European fleets.The initiative, called EUROGUARD, aims to develop a modular and semi-autonomous surface vessel platform with a remote control system that could be used across Europe. Volvo Penta gensets are powering the largest electric-hybrid ferry in Sweden. The Tellus ferry operates the 1.8km-wide Gullmarsleden waterway between Uddevalla and Lysekil – one of Sweden’s busy maritime routes. Ferry in Estonia Upgraded to Battery-Hybrid

Norwegian Electric Systems has signed a contract with the Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats to deliver upgrade of the Diesel Electric Propulsion system onboard the ferry Tõll to battery-hybrid.The ferry operator TS Laevad, a subsidiary of the listed port Company Tallinna Sadam, operates the ferry routes between Western Estonia’s major islands and mainland. The upgraded hybrid-ferry, serving the Virtsu-Kuivastu route, is expected to reduce the consumption of diesel fuel by one fifth as a result of the hybridization project.

Estonian Ferry Opts for Hybrid Retrofit

Estonian ferry company TS Laevad has signed an agreement with the Estonian shipbuilding company Baltic Workboats AS to rebuild the ferry Tõll, which operates the on the Virtsu-Kuivastu line, into environmentally friendly hybrid ship.The subsidiary of Tallinna Sadam said in a press release that during the reconstruction, a battery bank will be installed on the vessel to reduce the consumption of diesel fuel and reduce the resulting exhaust gas by replacing fossil fuel with electricity stored in battery banks.According to Jaak Kaabel, Chairman of the Board of TS Laevad, the project expects TS Laevad to replace about a fifth of the diesel fuel consumption with electricity.“We believe that on shorter ferry routes the environmentally friendly power ships are the future of ferry traffic…

Sweden Gets Largest Hybrid Car Ferry

Sweden’s largest hybrid-electric car ferry, Tellus, will soon begin passenger operations.The ferry will service Sweden's busiest maritime routes, along with more than 100,000 vehicles transported per month, the majority being heavy trucks.The 100-metre Tellus ferry can carry 80 cars and 297 passengers per tour and will operate with a battery capacity of 949 kWh mainly in fully electric mode.Danfoss Editron supplied the electric drive system. Battery Hybrid Patrol Boat under Development

PBES and NORIS Automation GmbH have partnered on the hybrid drive systems for Europe’s first battery hybrid patrol vessel. 24m Scientific Research Catamaran Launched

Incat Crowther announced the launch of Vėjūnas, a 24m Catamaran Scientific Research Vessel built by Baltic Workboats in Estonia. Classed by DNV, Vėjūnas has completed sea trials and has been delivered to Lithuania’s Ministry of Environment for operation in the Baltic Sea. The vessel will monitor the Baltic Sea nearshore area and the Curonian Lagoon. The aft deck features lower platform access, hydraulic A-Frame, 6,4tm Fassi deck crane and moon pool. The main deck cabin will feature two work spaces. To port will be a hydrological lab, with three workstations and bathroom.

Swedish Coast Guard Selects Volvo Penta

The Swedish Coast Guard is to install Volvo Penta’s Inboard Performance System (IPS) in a new type of vessel for sea rescue and border control. Using the IPS system, the Coast Guard is targeting to reduce the fuel consumption of the new vessels by about 30%. The drives were chose for the five new KBV 312 vessels that will be used for surveillance, border control, fishing control, sea rescue and safety at sea activities. The order to Volvo Penta consists of a total of 15 complete IPS systems.
