Double-Ended Cat Launched in Brazil

Rodriquez Cantieri Navali do Brasil SpA, the Brazilian yard of the Rodriquez Group, on June 13 launched the first of seven double ended catamarans under construction for Barcas SA in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. This catamaran will operate on the Rio de Janeiro – Niteroi route. The vessel is completely made in aluminum and has a maximum capacity of 1,200 passengers, with 900 seated and 300 standing. The catamaran is equipped with twin pod type propulsors with two variable pitch propellers with 360° rotation to maximize maneuverability and at the same time reach a speed of 18 knots, suitable for the three mile route. The catamaran is scheduled for delivery in July.

Construction on 10-Boat, $57M Contract Commences for Brazil

While much of the attention in the fast ferry niche often falls on designs and construction from Down Under, Italy's Rodriquez Cantieri Navali has built and maintained a stable of some of the most impressive high speed vessels in the world. It's South American affiliate, Rodriquez Cantieri Navali do Brasil SpA, recently commenced construction of seven Catamarans CityCat 52 DE model and three catamarans CityCat 29 model for the home market. The Brazilian ferry project is a unique one for the 115-year-old company in that all of the ferries will be built in Brazil, resulting in Rodriquez Cantieri Navali setting up a company there. Rodriquez Cantieri Navali Wins $57M, 10 Boat Contract

Rodriquez Cantieri Navali SpA won an approximate $57 million contract to build seven 147.6 ft. (45 m) double-ended Catamarans (type HC 18) and three 92 ft. (28 m) Catamarans (type MC 25) from Barcas S.A. in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The contract was signed on May 4, and construction of the boats will begin in June 2001, with delivery of the first vessels scheduled for approximately 12 months later. These vessels, designed and engineered by Rodriquez, are an extension of the CityCat range of catamarans and will serve the city of Rio de Janeiro and its suburbs. The 45-m HC 18, built entirely out of aluminium, will connect downtown Rio with the city of Niteroi, a Route of only three nautical miles but carrying approximately 22 million passengers per year.
