Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has appointed Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., U. S. Coast Guard (Retired), as President of Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc., Washington Operations. Admiral Papp served as an Officer in the Coast Guard for nearly 40 years, completing his career as the 24th Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard from 2010 to 2014. The Coast Guard is the largest component of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle sailed into New York City, Thursday, as part of a voyage commemorating 70-years since the original journey from northern Germany to New York.   The historic Eagle – the only active commissioned sailing vessel in the U.S. armed services – was constructed in 1936 and was acquired from Germany as a war reparation following World War II. The shipe is now primarily used to train cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.   Eagle’s arrival to New York also coincides with the Coast Guard’s 226th birthday.

The U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle sailed into Portsmouth Wednesday on its yearly tour of ports. The Eagle will be available for free public tours Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m, moored across from Portsmouth City Hall. Representatives from the U.S. Postal Service will have the new Coast Guard Forever Stamp available and offer a special cancellation on the pier from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. At 295 feet in length, the Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.

The U.S. Coast Guard will officially debut its newest National Security Cutter (NSC), Coast Guard Cutter James (WMSL 754) during a ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Coast Guard Base Boston. Ahead of the commissioning ceremony, Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City coordinated a photo opportunity with the Coast Guard Cutter James and Coast Guard Barque Eagle while underway in the Atlantic Ocean. The new cutter is named for Capt. Joshua James, who is one of the most celebrated lifesavers in history.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Postal Service leaders are scheduled to dedicate the United States Coast Guard Forever stamp during a ceremony Tuesday at Coast Guard Headquarters. The numerous cutters and craft of the U.S. Coast Guard —from the sail training ship Eagle to the large oceangoing patrol ships; from polar icebrakers to small utility boats — form a formidable fleet to meet the many challenging assignments undertaken by the service. In 2014 the Coast Guard continues its recapitalization program with its National Security Cutter (NSC), Fast Response Cutter (FPC) and Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC). Coast Guard Barque Eagle returned to New London, Conn. yesterday after spending the last three and a half months undergoing dockside maintenance and a foremast overhaul at the Coast Guard Yard facility in Baltimore. The Eagle will be inport in New London during February and early March conducting crew training and continuing all required annual maintenance. In mid-March, the Eagle will sail along the eastern seaboard conducting training for the Coast Guard and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Officer Candidates.

US Coast Guard cadet training barque ‘Eagle’ completes its first week of the cadet summer training deployment in the Atlantic Ocean. Eagle left its homeport in New London, Conn., and sailed more than 600 miles headed to the Caribbean while under sail power and using celestial navigation. 1906-In part due to the lobbying efforts of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York, Congress authorized the construction of a cutter "equipped to cruise for and destroy derelicts and obstructions to navigation" for the Revenue Cutter Service. The Service contracted with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company to build this "derelict destroyer," which was christened USRC Seneca. She was commissioned in 1908. 1938- Lieutenant C. B. Olsen became the first Coast Guardsman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He earned the award for "heroism in removing Lieutenant Colonel Gullion, U.S. Army, who was stricken with acute appendicitis, from the Army transport 'Republic'" after making an open-water landing near the freighter.

-The Coast Guard Cutter Barque Eagle will sail into Port Canaveral Friday for a weekend of free public tours and time ashore for the crew. Eagle, the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes, is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. on Friday, January 30, at Cruise Terminal 4. Brevard and Central Florida residents are invited to Jetty Park to greet the vessel. Parking fees will be waived from 7 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Free American flags will be distributed. Public tours will be conducted on Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The Coast Guard Cutter Barque Eagle will arrive in Port Everglades Friday at noon. The Eagle began its seven-day trip to Dania, Fla., after departing Nassau, Bahamas, June 14. The Eagle will be visiting Port Everglades as part of a summer training mission for training cadets before returning to its homeport of New London, Conn. As the flagship of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, the Eagle’s primary mission is to serve as a platform for training Academy cadets in the fundamental disciplines of seamanship. Through practical application, cadets learn navigation, engineering and ship maneuvering. In addition, they set more than 22,000 square feet of sail and control more than 20 miles of rigging lines while under way.

Coast Guard men and women celebrated America’s oldest, continuous sea-going service observes its 212th birthday on Sunday. The Coast Guard, one of America’s five armed services, traces it roots to Aug. 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of a fleet of “revenue marine” cutters to enforce the fledgling nations tariff and trade laws and protect the collection of federal revenue. The service expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew and today is responsible for many diverse missions; including maritime law enforcement, aiding mariners in distress, maintaining maritime navigation aids, protection of the marine environment, merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety, and serving as the lead maritime homeland security agency.
