Maersk Gets Saudi Ports Licence

The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani ) has issued a license to the local subsidiary of Maersk in order to operate in all ports across Saudi Arabia.According to the state news agency SPA, the step comes along with the authority’s strategy to improve the efficiency and quality of performance and services offered in Saudi ports.The new Maersk shipping license is the fourth of its kind to be issued to foreign investors in the Kingdom. Maersk joins other major lines of Barwil, Hapag-Lloyd and the Mediterranean Shipping Company, already operating.Saad Abdul Aziz Al-Khalb, President of the Saudi Ports Authority, (Mawani) commented that “We have issued a license to Maersk (Saudi Arabia) to operate in all 9 Saudi ports.

PierPass' New President Responsible for Ports of LA & Long Beach

New president John Cushing’s role gives him responsibility for PierPass programs to relieve congestion and improve air quality at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. He takes over the role of president from Bruce Wargo, who has led PierPass since its founding in 2004 and remains CEO. “John’s leadership in services for terminal operators, trucking companies and cargo owners, along with his experience developing and managing a new international container terminal, put PierPass and the OffPeak Program in able hands,” Mr. Wargo said. Mr. Wargo has taken on the additional role of PierPass board chairman. Under the OffPeak program, the 13 international container terminals at the two adjacent ports operate additional shifts on nights and Saturdays.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service acquires Nalfleet

Wilhelmsen Ships Service has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nalfleet, the marine division of Nalco, the world's largest sustainability services company. Together with its Unitor chemical range, this will further strengthen and enhance Wilhelmsen Ships Service’s marine chemicals portfolio. Nalfleet provides marine water treatment chemicals and is a sales and technical service organisation supported by an international manufacturing and distribution system operating in more than 500 major ports around the world. Wilhelmsen Ships Service’s own global network is already capable of servicing 2200 ports in 125 countries. This capacity was built upon the Wilhelmsen Maritime Services acquisition of Unitor in 2005 and the subsequent merger with Barwil Agencies.

New Wilhelmsen Office in St Petersburg

The world’s leading maritime service network Wilhelmsen Ships Service has relocated its St. Petersburg offices to upgraded premises. “The key reason for our move is that the new office space allows for the expansion that we are seeing as we achieve our planned growth of business in this area,” commented James Parsons, Area Director Eastern Europe for Wilhelmsen Ships Service. RV Finds Astoria Accomodating

With miles of ocean, and thousands of ports from which to choose, it was no accident that the 470 foot research vessel JOIDES Resolution, an ocean depths research ship owned by TransOcean, called Port of Astoria’s Pier 1 “home” for a ten day stay. Houston Welcomes King of Norway

Port of Houston Authority Chairman Jim Edmonds, the PHA commissioners and staff on Wednesday, March 2, hosted a welcome reception for His Majesty King Harald V of Norway aboard the M/V Star Gazer as the vessel toured the Houston Ship Channel. The reception also was attended by several shipping industry executives and local elected officials. As he congratulated Norway on the centennial celebration of its independence, PHA's Chairman Edmonds noted that Norway has an enviable reputation in maritime shipping. "Even here on the Houston Ship Channel, Norwegian names are everywhere conducting business, such as Stolt-Nielsen, Odfjell, Aker Marine, Barwil Agencies, Skaugen and many others," Edmonds said.

Wilhelmsen Acquires Unitor

Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) reached agreement to acquire 90.4 per cent of the shares in Norway's Unitor group. This acquisition accords with WW's strategy of developing its Wilhelmsen Maritime Services (WMS) subsidiary into a leading global player in the maritime services sector. The deal has been concluded with Unitor's principal shareholders - Umoe Industri AS, the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme Fund and Odin Forvaltning. Their holdings corresponds to 90.4 percent of the outstanding shares in the company, and the agreed price is $11.36 (NOK 73.50) per share. This deal allows WW to secure the rest of the Unitor shares. The total purchase price for all the stock will be just over $2.2 billion (NOK 1.4 billion).
