Navy Puts $30 Billion DD 21 Design Contract on Hold

The Navy put off indefinitely Thursday the choice of a winning design in an all-new $30 billion advanced destroyer program pending developments in sweeping Defense Department reviews. Competing for design and full-service contractor awards for the ship, known as DD 21, are teams led by General Dynamics Corp.'s Bath Iron Works unit and Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Ingalls Shipbuilding subsidiary. The Navy has been planning to buy 32 of the ships over 35 years at a combined cost of about $30 billion, or $750 million per unit after the fourth ship. Highly modular in design, the electric-powered DD 21 would be equipped to attack foes hundreds of miles inland as well as fight at sea.

Crew Moves Aboard LPD 17 Amphibious Transport Dock Ship

U.S. Navy sailors Thursday began moving aboard LPD 17, the first San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship built by Northrop Grumman Corporation. This activity is a significant step in bringing this modern, highly technical asset to life as part of the nation's defense plan. Northrop Grumman Ship Systems delivered the LPD 17 to the U. Navy on July 20. Marines. such, offers unparalleled amphibious war-fighting capabilities. construction of U.S. Grumman's Ship Systems sector. ranks as the most significant because those men and women wearing U.S. Navy uniforms now have a place to call their home. than any ship in the history of the Navy. gunner's mate on LPD 17 who served on prior LPD-class ships. much easier to move around, especially if I'm carrying equipment.
