Dutch offshore installation company Heerema Marine Contractors has been selected by Japan's INPEX as a contractor of choice for the transport and installation of the 4,800 metric ton Ichthys LNG Booster Compression Module (BCM), offshore W. Australia.The module will be installed on the Ichthys Explorer Central Processing Facility, located off the northwest coast of Western Australia, as part of the Ichthys LNG phase 2 development.Heerema will transport the BCM from the fabrication yard on Batam Island in Indonesia to the Ichthys field before installing it in a single lift.

Singapore's Sunseap Group says it plans to spend $2 billion to build the world's largest floating solar farm and energy storage system in neighboring Indonesian city Batam, which will double its renewable power generation capacity.The floating photovoltaic system is expected to have a capacity of 2.2 gigawatt-peak (GWp), and will be located on the Duriangkang Reservoir in Batam Island spanning around 1,600 hectares, Sunseap said in a statement.The company and Batam Indonesia free zone authority…

The Iranian and Panamanian-flagged vessels seized by Indonesian authorities for suspected illegal oil transfers are making their way to dock at Batam island in the country’s Riau Islands Province for further investigation, a Indonesia coast guard spokesman told Reuters.The two supertankers, with crew members from Iran and China, were seized on Sunday in Indonesian waters near Kalimantan island. The MT Horse, owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company and MT Freya, managed by Shanghai Future Ship Management Co, had a total of 61 crew members onboard.“The ships will arrive in Batam at around 3pm (0600GMT) to 4pm later today,” Wisnu Pramandita…

Iran has asked Indonesia to provide details about the seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday, a day after Jakarta said it had seized Iran and Panama-flagged tankers in its waters.Indonesia said on Sunday its coast guard had seized the Iranian-flagged MT Horse and the Panamanian-flagged MT Freya vessels over suspected illegal oil transfer in the country’s waters.Khatibzadeh said that the seizure was over a “a technical issue and it happens in shipping field”.“Our Ports Organisation and the ship owner company are looking to find the cause of the issue and resolve it,” Khatibzadeh told a televised weekly news conference.Coast guard spokesman Wisnu Pramandita said the tankers…

An Indonesia-flagged car carrier operated by the NYK Group company PT. NYK-SPIL INDORORO, rescued eight fishermen in distress at the Strait of Malacca last week.The 100-meter roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ship Kalimantan Leader was sailing from Belawan, Indonesia, to Jakarta, on September 23 when its crew spotted eight fishermen in the water after their vessel sank.The merchant vessel rescued the distressed fishermen immediately, and the eight men were transferred in to an Indonesian Coast Guard vessel on September 24 off Batam Island, Indonesia. McDermott International announced a substantial contract award from Mærsk Olie og Gas A/S (Maersk Oil) for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) services for the Tyra Redevelopment project, located offshore in the Danish sector of the North Sea. “This award heralds our return to the North Sea and is a part of our strategic growth strategy,” said Scott Munro, Vice President of Americas, Europe and Africa. “By executing our part of the Tyra Redevelopment project from Kuala Lumpur and Batam, the project showcases our vertically integrated One McDermott Way approach to project execution and delivery, which demonstrates our global engineering and fabrication capabilities. This is one of several projects executed in this way," he added.

Majestic Fast Ferry’s newest ferry, the Majestic Dream, set sail on a maiden voyage from Singapore Cruise Centre’s (SCC) HarbourFront terminal. The 11th vessel in Majestic Fast Ferry’s fleet will ply the operator’s existing routes between Singapore and the Riau Islands in Indonesia. It will serve passengers travelling to and from SCC’s HarbourFront and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal in Singapore, Batam Center and Sekupang terminals in Batam as well as Tanjung Pinang in Bintan. The ferry was designed by Australian naval architect and engineering service firm Incat Crowther. It is the second series of ships built by Majestic Fast Ferry at its shipyard on Batam Island, following its first series comprising Majestic 7, 8 and 9.

A speedboat carrying 101 people, mostly migrant workers, struck a reef and sank off an Indonesian island on Wednesday, killing 18 people, the country's disaster agency said. The accident occurred as the boat was heading from the southern Malaysian state of Johor towards Indonesia's Batam island, just south of Singapore, according to a statement by the Indonesian national disaster mitigation agency. The boat, carrying 98 Indonesian migrant workers and three crew, hit the reef after being caught up in strong winds and big waves and sank at around dawn, it said. As of Wednesday evening, 18 people were confirmed dead, 39 people had been found alive while rescue teams were searching for the remaining 44, the agency added.

Around 1,300 offshore support vessels lying idle worldwide. Not everyone in shipping is bemoaning the industry's worst crisis in living memory: a cluster of companies that help preserve equipment and provide security for vessels parked around southeast Asia are busier than they have been for years. A popular lay-up anchorage near Indonesia's Batam island, a short hop from Singapore, is growing crowded, and firms such as Ocean Shipcare and Brubay Shipcare are running out of space at another at Brunei Bay, near Labuan, off northern Borneo. "Where do we go next? It's a good question, because we are trying to explore some other areas also," said Kanen Senasendram, base manager at Ocean Shipcare, which operates in Brunei Bay. He says he may need to hire more staff.

Two Singapore-registered vessels have been detained in Indonesia the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said. The sole Singaporean who was caught along with those ships is a marine surveyor and he returned to Singapore on March 16. MPA also said it was assisting Indonesia in the investigations of the two separate incidents. Recent media reports had quoted that four Singapore-registered vessels and four Singaporeans were detained. Indonesia said it had detained a total of four Singapore-registered ships in two incidents in early March, each of which involved boats that allegedly did not have proper papers. MPA clarified that only two vessels are Singapore-registered and only one person detained is a Singaporean marine surveyor.

McDermott International, Inc. announced today that one of its subsidiaries has been awarded a fast-track fabrication contract by PC Ketapang II Ltd., a subsidiary of PETRONAS for the BTJT-A Jacket as part of the Bukit Tua Development Project in the Ketapang block of East Java, Indonesia. The contract is included in McDermott’s second quarter 2014 backlog. McDermott will fabricate the four-leg 1,100-tonne wellhead jacket, from the Batam Island fabrication facility in Indonesia. The project is expected to be complete by mid November 2014.

J. Ray McDermott, S.A. (J. Ray) announced that its subsidiary P.T. McDermott Indonesia (PTMI) has been awarded a contract by the Kellogg Joint Venture-Gorgon on behalf of Chevron Australia Pty. Ltd, operator of the Gorgon Project. The estimated value of the contract if the work is completed per contract terms is in excess of $150m. More than 60 pre-assembled racks and units with an estimated combined weight of approximately 25,000 tonnes will be constructed at J. Ray’s Batam Island fabrication facility in Indonesia. J. Ray will provide services for project management, fabrication engineering, procurement and material management, construction, commissioning assistance, quarantine compliance, loadout and seafastening.

Drydocks World - Southeast Asia Pte Limited, the Southeast Asian subsidiary of Drydocks World, announced that it has secured a newbuilding contract with Scottish Highlands International Inc., a subsidiary of Coastline Maritime Pte Ltd, to construct a 689-ft Ultra Large Multi-Purpose Offshore Construction Vessel. DDW-Sea operates four shipyards in Singapore and on Batam Island Indonesia providing offshore rig construction, volume shipbuilding and ship repair and conversion services. It currently has fourteen offshore supply vessels under construction. Its flagship building is OSA Sampson, the second of two Multi-Purpose Offshore Construction Vessels under construction at Drydocks World - Pertama shipyard for Coastline Maritime.

Drydocks World - Dubai, the ship repair, conversion and building subsidiary of Drydocks World, has added two new berths to its facility, significantly increasing its conversion capacity. Completed recently, Berths 9 and 10 are now fully operational and have recently accommodated the 380-metre long TI Asia, Abuzar and Spring Bow for conversion works. The announcement comes ahead of Drydocks World’s participation at Nor-Shipping 09, in Oslo, June 9th–12th, where the company’s yard capabilities in the Middle East and Southeast Asia will be highlighted.

With the next "offshore boom" looming on the horizon, many of the vessel repair and conversion yards, particularly but not limited to the Gulf of Mexico region, are projecting good times in the coming year. Quite simply, the sustained high price of oil will eventually push oil majors - which have been sedate to date due to continued consolidation and a fear of extending too far, too soon - to start spending again on exploration and production, particularly in deepwaters. In conjunction with this is the expected decision of the U.S. MMS on the use of Floating Production Systems in the Gulf of Mexico, a development which will further drive down the cost of recovering product from record depths and have a resulting positive effect on the companies which build…

J. Ray McDermott (J. Ray) project staff at the Morgan City fabrication yard successfully completed the load-out of a 9,015-ton jacket built for Reliance Industries Limited as part of an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation contract/purchase order undertaken at J. Ray company facilities worldwide. The load-out, which took just over 23-hours from start to finish, was the culmination of just over 12 months of hard work fabricating the jacket for the KG-D6 field on the east coast of India. Before embarking on its 13,375-nautical mile journey around the world, the jacket’s first stop was Pascagoula, MS where it rendezvoused with a Fast Transport Vessel (FTV). The jacket and cargo barge were loaded onto the FTV for a 46-day journey to the J.

McDermott International subsidiary J. Ray McDermott, S.A. won a $77 million contract by Woodside Energy Ltd., operator of the North West Shelf Venture's LNG Phase V Expansion project in Australia. Under the contract, J. Ray will undertake construction engineering, procurement, fabrication, assembly and erection of 75 pre-assembled module and pipe rack units totaling nearly 22,000 short tons. Completed modules and pipe racks will be shipped from J. Ray's Batam Island, Indonesian fabrication facility to Western Australia, and transported to the Venture's LNG facilities on the Barrup Peninsula where the new LNG "Train V" is being constructed.
