Global Maritime Consultancy & Engineering has introduced a new set of policies and procedures to support its Dynamic Positioning (DP) activities. The new procedures will ensure continued excellence and consistency across all Global Maritime’s global DP operations. The document will cover general working practices and core competencies as well as working procedures relating to DP Systems Audits & Verifications; Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), attendance at DP trials, and the development of other DP documentation.

Dredging NZ has been fined $79,500 and ordered to pay $42,000 in reparation after the death of a worker, crushed on a dredging barge in West Park Marina, Auckland, on November 19, 2013, Maritime New Zealand reported. Peter Bateman died after being crushed between an excavator and the wall of a hopper, on a barge being skippered by Brent Darrach. Dredging NZ was sentenced July 21 in Auckland District Court after pleading guilty to a charge laid by Maritime New Zealand under section 6 of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, that as an employer it failed to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees at work. Crowley Maritime Corporation recently awarded four Thomas B. Crowley, Sr., Memorial Scholarships to University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) students Alexandra Bateman, Gabrielle Bragg, Diloola Erickson and Kimberly Greenway. These students were chosen for their outstanding academic records and having met other scholarship criteria. They each received $2,500 toward tuition. The American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) announced that U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) would be the 2010 recipient of the Herbert H. Bateman Award. The award will be presented Wednesday, June 23 at 6:00 pm during ASA's Salute to the Illih Congress reception in the Gold Room (2168) of the Rayburn House Office Building. "Thad Cochran, throughout his 38 years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate, has been a tireless advocate for a stronger shipbuilding industry and our Nation's sea services.

The American Shipbuilding Association (ASA) announced that Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) is the 2009 recipient of the Herbert H. Bateman Award. This award was presented on Wednesday, May 13th at 6:00 pm during ASA’s Salute to the 111th Congress reception in the Gold Room (2168) of the Rayburn House Office Building. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, Senator Reed is a senior Member of the Armed Services Committee, a Member of the Subcommittee on Seapower, and a Member of the Appropriations Committee. In recognition of her commitment to the men and women who work at Bath Iron Works, a coalition of shipbuilders pledged their support for Susan Collins for re-election to the United States Senate. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Collins has supported legislation to provide a continued and steady workload at Bath Iron Works (BIW). Senator Collins has stated that BIW has been, and must continue to be, a central part of efforts to expand and modernize the U.S. Naval fleet to counter existing and emerging threats.

Northrop Grumman Corporation announces the following three executive appointments in its Newport News sector: Becky Stewart, currently vice president, Surface Ship and Submarine Fleet Maintenance Program has been named head of the Submarine Program; Irwin F. Edenzon, currently vice president, Business and Technology Development, has been named vice president, Technology Development and Fleet Support; and John J. promoted to vice president, Business Development. Stolt-Nielsen S.A. appointed Otto H. Fritzner as CEO of Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group (SNTG). Fritzner most recently served as Managing Director, Ship Owning at SNTG. He succeeds James B. Herbert Bateman, 72, a nine-term congressman and strong military supporter who planned to retire at the end the year, died in his sleep on Monday, September 11, according to a spokesman. Bateman, first elected in 1982, had dominated his heavily Republican district in the Tidewater region of Virginia. He used his seat on the House Armed Services Committee to support the military and the area's heavy concentration of defense contractors while building a moderate voting record. The congressman was noted for his steadfast knowledge and experience in dealing with the various challenges that are constantly faced by the U.S. shipbuilding industry today.

For Americans with a stake in shipbuilding, a key budgetary concern is the amount of funding that will be requested for the Federal Ship Financing Program administered by the Maritime Administration ("MarAd"). The Conferees on the Defense Authorization Bill, S.1059, for fiscal year 2000 wrapped up their conference after providing "Extended Lease" authority of 20 years or more to the Secretary of the Navy for the services of non-combatant ships, and rejecting an attempt by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to repeal the three-year waiting period before foreign-built ships are eligible to carry preference cargo. The House Armed Services Committee has been working for three years to provide the Secretary of the Navy the authority to enter into long-term leases of the services of newly constructed non-combatant ships as an alternative to procuring the ships in the Shipbuilding and Conversion Account.
