The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has reopened waterways from Matagorda Bay to Galveston Bay following their closure due to Tropical Storm Bill.   The USCG informs it has lifted the Federal Safety Zone in place for small crafts, and has opened the waterways from Matagorda Bay to Galveston Bay, at 6 a.m. Wednesday.   Port Condition is back to normal as set by the Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Houston.

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) closes waterways from Matagorda Bay to Galveston Bay as Tropical Storm Bill arrives   The USCG said it continues to broadcast notification of a Federal Safety Zone in place for small crafts Tuesday on the waterways from Matagorda Bay to Galveston Bay.   This safety zone was established late Monday night and prohibits the use of small crafts and offshore transfer operations on the waterways referenced and will remain in effect until canceled by the Captain of the Port of Houston. All mariners are required to adhere to these restrictions without delay.   Due to approaching severe weather, search and rescue assets will be limited.   The Lynchburg Ferry suspended services at approximately 7:20 a.m., due to rising tide levels.

Serious crashes in the bustling Bay of Galveston have fallen to the lowest level in a decade even as more oil moves on U.S. waterways, official data show, suggesting that better training and equipment are helping avert spills like one in March. The number of crashes in the Texas bay, home to the Houston Ship Channel and the country's heaviest crude, fuel and chemical ship traffic, fell 68 percent to eight in 2013 from 25 in 2011, according to U.S. Coast Guard data obtained by Reuters through the Freedom of Information Act. The Coast Guard is investigating the grounding of the 575-ft motor vessel Pollux, which ran aground two miles east of Gadsden Point in Hillsborough Bay, Fla., on Jan. 2. Members from Sector St. Petersburg are investigating the incident and are working with the vessel's crew and representatives to safely remove the vessel. Vessel traffic has not been affected, but all vessel operators are urged to use caution when transiting the area.

Transocean, Inc. reported today that a well-control incident last night on its inland barge Rig 62 regrettably took the life of one its employees. The incident, which resulted in a fire, occurred at approximately 11:00 pm on the rig while working for TransTexas Gas Corporation in Galveston Bay near Galveston, Texas. Twenty-two people were on board the rig, and 21 people were successfully evacuated. Four persons evacuated from the rig were taken to area hospitals and three have been released. The remaining hospitalized person does not appear to have life-threatening injuries.The latest reports indicate that the fire on the rig has diminished and is presently confined to the mud pits and that the well has ceased to flow.
