On March 20, 2014, Vietnamese Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong, cut the ribbon for the latest addition to Damen Shipyard Group’s portfolio. Damen Song Cam is a new yard, and is one of the largest in the group and represents Damen’s first formal Joint Venture yard in Vietnam. Damen said Song Cam is considered state-of-the-art, bringing a western shipyard designed to meet European health, safety and environmental standards into a Vietnamese environment. The yard will produce around 40 ships per year in phase one.

Damen Song Cam, a brand new yard, is one of the largest in the group and represents Damen’s first formal Joint Venture yard in Vietnam. Damen said Song Cam is considered state-of-the-art, bringing a western shipyard designed to meet European health, safety and environmental standards into a Vietnamese environment. The yard will produce around 40 ships annually in the first phase.

Rolls-Royce, a provider of marine systems, has won a $17.5m order to supply fuel-efficient maneuverability systems for four new cement carrying vessels. The vessels, due for delivery in 2011 and 2012, are the latest generation of this type of ship. The four 16,800 dwt vessels will be operated by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Group (KGJS). The order includes the Promas integrated propeller and rudder system, steering gear, tunnel thrusters and deck machinery. The system also includes switchboards, automation systems and an integrated bridge. The Promas can increase propulsive efficiency by four to six percent with improved maneuverability at high and low speeds. The vessels are being built at the Vinashin Group’s Ben Kien shipyard in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL) announced the signing of Vinashin Engineering and Technology Joint Stock Company (Vinashin E&T) as the dealer for its flagship ShipConstructor software product for the Vietnam market. Under this agreement, Vinashin E&T will be the sales, support and training contact for ShipConstructor in Vietnam. ShipConstructor is the easy-to-use, AutoCAD-based 3D product-modeling software for the design and fabrication of complete ships and offshore structures. “After testing ShipConstructor throughout our entire company, we were so impressed that we approached ARL about becoming a dealer,” said Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Director of Vinashin E&T.

Wärtsilä received an order for a propulsion package from Vietnam in September 2007. The contract was awarded by the Ben Kien Shipyard in Haiphong and involves the supply of a propulsion package for a 564 TEU multi-purpose carrier to be built for Hai Duong Shipbuilding & Shipping Company, both companies being subsidiaries of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin Group). The vessel, designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China, has a length of 115.0 m, and a moulded breadth of 20.8 m. The Wärtsilä propulsion package will comprise an eight-cylinder Wärtsilä 38 diesel engine, 4.40 m-diameter four-bladed controllable-pitch (CP) propeller, shafting, reduction gearbox, stern tube and shaft seals.

VOSTA has been awarded with the contract for the delivery of a complete engineering and component package for a trailing suction hopper dredge for Dutch Dredging BV (Baggerbedrijf De Boer b.v.) in The Netherlands. The complete order consists of the design and engineering of a 2800 m3 trailing suction hopper dredge, including the delivery of the dredging equipment, propulsion systems, electrical installation, automation, hydraulic installation, navigation & communication systems. The vessel will be built under VOSTA LMG supervision at the Ben Kien Shinco Shipyard based in Hai Phong, Vietnam. This shipyard is part of the Vietnamese Shipbuilding group Vinashin. VOSTA LMG and Ben Kien Shipyard have co-operated before for the construction of two cutter suction dredges.

The Ben Kien Shipyard, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), on Jan. 31 delivered a 8,700-tonne cargo ship to the Japanese Kanematsu Corporation. This was the second of four 8,700-tonne cargo ships built by the shipyard for Kanematsu. The Kaiki freighter, 111.7m long, 18.6m wide and 9.6m high, was designed by the Japanese AZ Company and built under the supervision of the Japanese NK registration agency. Haiphong has been long viewed as a cradle of the Vietnamese ship building industry with such well-known names as Bach Thai Buoi and Nguyen Huu Thu in the past and Bach Dang, Nam Trieu, Pha Rung and Ben Kien today. Annually, shipbuilding firms in Haiphong city accounts for about 50% of the whole sector’s capacity. The city has continued to assert itself as a centre for building new ships and repairing large tonnage ships. By 2010, Vinashin is expected to invest nearly VND 4,000 billion in shipbuilding establishments in Haiphong, raising capacity for building new ships and repairing ships with a view to earning revenue of VND 8,000 billion.

The Pha Rung Shipyard in the northern port city of Hai Phong on August 15 began work on its largest-ever cargo ship of 34,000 DWT and an oil tanker of 6,500 DWT. As part of Pha Rung's contract to build 8 cargo ships for Graig Invetments of the UK, the 34,000 DWT ship, worth 26.5 million USD, is designed utilising state-of-art technology and will meet all international conventions on maritime operation. This is the most modern and largest ship that Pha Rung, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), has ever built, a company executive said, adding that the ship is expected to be handed over to its owner in 18 months.

On February 25, the Ben Kien Shipbuilding Industry Company successfully launched the Grace Casablanca cargo ship of 8,700 ton. This is the first of four 8,700 ton ships ordered by Kanematsu group of Japan. The ships, designed by Japan’s AZ company, are 111.8 metres long, 18.6 metres wide, 9.65 metres high. The main engine of 3,120 kW is supplied by Mitsubishi. The company will continue its efforts to finish construction of the ship and start building the remaining three ships as ordered.
