U.S. Shipyard Design Enhancement Project Gets NSRP Funding

The development of key features in ShipConstructor will be funded by the Second-Tier Shipyard Design Enhancement Project II, which recently received significant funding from the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise. The project, headed by Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc., includes seven shipyards and four naval architect firms, representing the core of second-tier shipbuilding and ship design in the United States. The overall goal of the project is to provide U.S. second-tier shipyards with a state-of-the-art design system that will enhance their global competitiveness. Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL) will extend ShipConstructor’s capabilities to fully meet the design requirements of the U.S. second-tier shipyard industry.

Bender Awarded Containership Contract

Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Inc., of Mobile, Alabama, has become the first U.S. shipyard to win a container ship contract in 10 years. The contract calls for Bender to build two vessels capable of carrying 367 45-ft. containers for California-based Santa Maria Shipping L.L.C. Bender and Santa Maria Shipping will sign the contract at a ceremony and press briefing.

Bender and Otto Candies Agree On Tugs

Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., and Otto Candies have signed a contract for three 150 ft. (45.7 m) Anchor Handling Tugs to be constructed by the Mobile, Ala., shipbuilding company. The contract, which requires the trio of vessels to be delivered in 2000, also grants Otto Candies an option to purchase five more identical tugs. Measuring 150 x 50 x 21 ft. (45.7 x 15.2 x 6.4 m), with a 10,000-hp capacity, the vessels hold a Stewart & Stevenson triple screw propulsion system, with two EMD diesel engines driving outboard Aquamaster Z-drives and one EMD diesel engine through a Reintjes reverse reduction gear. Deck machinery aboard the tug group will consist of a SMATCO line pull Double Drum Reverse Waterfall Towing/Anchor Handling Winch; two SMATCO tuggers rated at 20,000 lbs.
