Kitsap Transit Acquires Vessel from San Francisco Bay Ferry

Bremerton, Wash. ferry operator Kitsap Transit said it has purchased the secondhand passenger vessel Solano for approximately $1 million from the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA),The sale closed last Friday following approval by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The federal government has an interest in the 125-foot high-speed ferry that dates back to 2004, when the City of Vallejo, Calif., used a federal grant to buy the 320-passenger catamaran for $11,165,604 from Anacortes, Wash.

Petrobras Extends Charters for Three Subsea 7 PLSVs

Brazilian oil company Petrobras has extended contracts with offshore services company Subsea 7 for three pipelay support vessels (PLSVs) operating offshore Brazil. Subsea 7 said Friday that the extensions of long-term contracts had a combined value of about $155 million, net of agreed reductions to the current day-rates.The extension increases Subsea 7's backlog relating to the four Brazilian PLSVs to $493 million at August 31, 2020.The vessels Seven Waves, Seven Rio, and Seven Cruzeiro will operate at a new day-rate with effect from August 1…

Cargo Ships Slow Transits to Curb Emissions, Protect Whales

Partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect whales have announced results from the 2017 program and publicly recognized the 11 shipping companies who participated, reducing speeds to 12 knots or less in two regions. For the first time the program included speed reduction zones in the San Francisco Bay Area in addition to the Santa Barbara Channel region. The voluntary incentive program started July 1 and ended November 15, 2017. Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for ship speeds in the program verified that more than 140 transits were successful in reducing speeds to 12 knots or less, and more than half of these were successful in achieving a bonus incentive for slowing to 10 knots or less.

TOTE Invests (again) in LNG Conversions

TOTE Inc., courtesy of being the first in the world to order containerships powered by LNG, have been leaders in the push to design and build tonnage ahead of the emissions regulation curve. The company again makes headline with the announcement that TOTE Maritime Alaska has contracted MAN PrimeServ – MAN Diesel & Turbo’s after-sales division – to convert a pair of RoRo ships, North Star and Midnight Sun to dual-fuel operation on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Today the vessels are powered by four × MAN 58/64 engines and will be retrofitted to MAN 58/64 retrofit units.

MacGregor Bags 7 Middle East OSV Contracts

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won comprehensive equipment package contracts for a variety of seven specialist support vessels that will operate in the Middle East region. MacGregor will deliver deck cranes and a range of deck machinery to each vessel. The order is booked into the third quarter 2016 order intake.
