Marine News' Top Vessels of 2022

The November edition of Marine News magazine highlighted the most notable newbuilds delivered in 2022. From sturdy and nimble workboats, to the first new Jones Act laker in a generation, each vessel on display showcases the industry’s engineering prowess and technological ingenuity, with the focus on improving efficiency in operations. The maritime industry has no shortage of challenges to overcome, and each of Marine News’ top vessels will, in one way or another, aid efforts to tackle them.Mark W.

All American Marine Delivers Whale-watching Vessel to Puget Sound Express

Bellingham, Wash. shipbuilder All American Marine (AAM) has delivered the new whale-watching vessel Swiftsure to Puget Sound Express (PSE).The vessel was modeled after the All American Marine built and Teknicraft designed Saratoga, delivered in the Spring of 2018. The larger 77’ Swiftsure will maintain performance while adding space to Puget Sound Express’ whale watch and eco-tourism business, the builder said.The 150-passenger, semi-displacement catamaran hull for this vessel was developed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand.

All American Marine Delivers Second Vessel for Major Marine Tours

All American Marine (AAM) has completed construction, launched, and delivered the Skana, a 150-passenger hydrofoil-assisted catamaran for Major Marine Tours. This is the second delivered to Major Marine Tours by All American Marine in two years, and a sister ship to the Spirit of Matushka, delivered in the Spring of 2021. This vessel will also operate out of Seward, Alaska and will carry passengers on tours visiting Kenai Fjords National Park. This 87’ (LOA) x 32” Teknicraft Aluminum catamaran, is certified to USCG Subchapter T.

Snow & Company Delivers New Launch to the Savannah Pilots

Seattle shipbuilder Snow & Company earlier this month delivered Savannah, the first of two new 64-foot pilot boats for the Savanah Pilots Association. Designed by Camarc Design, the single chine, flush deck 5086 aluminum vessel is the third pilot boat the U.K.-based firm has designed for the Savannah pilots.Savannah is powered by MTU 12V2000M86 marine engines, Hamilton HTX 52 waterjets with electronic AVX controls, ZF 3055 marine gears, and Geislinger Carbon Fiber driveshafts / Silenco couplings.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers Completely Refitted Ferry to Bermuda

Resolute, one of two high-speed passenger catamarans delivered by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to the Government of Bermuda, Ministry on Transport in 2002, has returned to service after a compete refit. In turn, the vessel’s sister ship, Serenity, has been delivered to the shipyard for the same types of upgrades — scheduled for completion by next March.Designed by Incat Design (currently Incat Crowther), Resolute carries 250 passengers. Bermuda Ferry Returns to Gladding-Hearn for Refit

Resolute, one of two high-speed passenger catamarans delivered by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation to Bermuda's Ministry on Transport in 2002, has returned to the shipyard for a complete refit. The project’s completion is scheduled for May 2021.Designed by Incat Design (currently Incat Crowther), the all-aluminum 250-passenger vessel measures 84 feet long, 30 feet abeam and draws 5.3 feet.Among myriad items to remove, repair or replace is replacing the vessel’s Detroit Diesel engines with new engine controls and monitoring systems to operate twin MTU 10V2000M72 diesel engines…

All American Marine Bags Tour Boats Order

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) announced it has won a contract to build a pair of quad-jet sister vessels to expand Seward, Alaska-based Major Marine Tours’ fleet of wildlife and glacier cruise vessels that visit Kenai Fjords National Park. These 87’ x 32” Teknicraft Aluminum catamarans, will be certified USCG Subchapter “T” for 150 passengers.These semi-displacement catamarans were developed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand. The design integrates the signature Teknicraft symmetrical and asymmetrical combined hull shape.

RI Operator Receives Second GH Ferry

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered a second high-speed passenger ferry for Rhode Island Fast Ferry, Inc., for service between Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, alongside Ava Pearl, the operator’s first high-speed catamaran built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard in 2012.The new 320-passenger, all-aluminum catamaran, Julia Leigh, measures 113.5 feet (34.4m) overall, 32.4 feet (9.9m) at the beam, and draws six feet (1.9m). It is powered by twin MTU-12V4000M64 diesel engines, each delivering 1875 Bhp at 1800 rpm.

AAM, Puget Sound Express Launch the 'Saratoga'

All American Marine, Inc. and the Hanke family of Puget Sound Express announced the launch of the Saratoga, the newest member of the PSE whale watching fleet. The 73-foot, high speed aluminum catamaran vessel was designed by Nic De Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand and built by All American Marine in Bellingham, WA. The Saratoga was the second vessel to be completed and launched from All American Marine’s new state of the art facility on Bellingham Bay. “This is a very special event for Puget Sound Express,” said co-owner Peter Hanke. “The Saratoga is the first boat that we have had the opportunity to build, and we designed it with customers, whales, and the environment in mind.

Add to that list London, for increasingly the fleet of MBNA Thames Clippers is becoming as identifiable with the British capital as its famous red double decker buses. Incat Tasmania’s Latest Ship on the way to Japan

The latest delivery from Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania Akane, an 85 metre high speed Wave Piercing Catamaran Ferry, Incat hull 068, will arrive in Japan early April. Built at the Incat shipyard at Prince of Wales Bay, Hobart the vessel was sea trialled late   March, and has departed Hobart on her delivery voyage. The vessel will go into service in April with Sado Kisen, a long standing ferry operator in Japan. Akane will operate from the Niigata and Naoetsu ports on the west coast of Japan to the Sado Island ports of Ogi and Ryotsu.

Gladding-Hearn Bags Hy-Line Cruises Catamaran Order

Hy-Line Cruises, a division of Hyannis Harbor Tours, Inc., Hyannis, Mass., has ordered a new 493-passenger, high-speed catamaran from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, the Duclos Corporation. The fourth Incat-Crowther fast ferry built by the Mass.-based shipyard for the Cape Cod passenger ferry company is larger and more stylish in design than previous vessels. The new ferry will provide year-round passenger service between Hyannis and Nantucket Island. Delivery is scheduled for 2016. The new, all-aluminum ferry is about 153.5 feet (46.8 m) long, 34.5 feet (10.5 m) at the beam, and draws approximately 8 feet (2.5 m), loaded. The vessel will be powered by four Cummins QSK60-M, EPA Tier 3 diesel engines, each delivering 2200 Bhp at 1800 rpm.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers High-Speed Ferry to Boston

Bay State Cruise Company, Boston, Mass., has taken delivery of a new fast ferry from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation  to carry passengers between Boston and Provincetown, Massachusetts. Provincetown IV will operate daily on the 48 nautical mile, 90-minute run, along with its near sistership, Provincetown III, which the Somerset, Mass., shipyard built in 2004. When the long-time operators of the National Park Service passenger route from Key West, Florida, to Dry Tortugas National Park were looking to keep that contract and further upgrade the quality of their offerings in that market, they did what most satisfied customers would do: they went back to the builder of their current vessel, Massachusetts-based Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding. Gladding-Hearn Starts Building for service to Dry Tortugas

Having recently signed a new 10-year contract with the National Park Service (NPS) for passenger service between Key West, Fla., and the Dry Tortugas National Park, Massachusetts-based Yankee Fleet has ordered a new 250-passenger, high-speed catamaran from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, the Duclos Corporation. The new vessel will replace the ferry operator’s interim vessel, Yankee Freedom II, which the shipyard built in 1999. Delivery is planned for 2011. The new, larger vessel, designed by Incat-Crowther, closely resembles the Yankee Freedom II in order to retain the strong brand presence Yankee Fleet has established with tourists to the national park, said company officials. The all-aluminum catamaran measures 110 feet (33.5m) long, 30.6’ (9.3m) at the beam, and will draw 7 feet (2m).

Færgen Takes Delivery of Austal's Largest Catamaran

South Boats Special Projects Ltd. announces the commissioning of its 54th offshore wind farm crew transfer vessel, ‘Iceni Pride’. The vessel is a South Catamaran 13m Rapid Response Vessel (RRV) built to fulfil a 5 year contract Iceni Marine Services has in place with Scottish & Southern Energy on their Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm project. This vessel is the fourth built for Iceni with a further three in build and on order. Iceni Pride is outfitted to a very high standard with an abundance of teak and leather to take into account that one of the roles is VIP transportation.

5th Incat for New York Water Taxi

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered its fifth high-speed water taxi, Gene Flatow, to New York City-based New York Water Taxi. Like the four sisters before her, the bright yellow, all-aluminum catamaran, designed by Incat Crowther, measures 72 ft long and 27.3 ft abeam, and draws 5 ft. The water taxi is USCG-certified to carry 149 passengers but limited to only 99 passengers when operating at the City’s “water taxi” designated docks. The vessel is powered by twin Cummins QSK 19-M diesel engines, each rated at 800 Bhp at 2100 rpm.

Rhode Island Fast Ferry Co. has taken delivery of a new high-speed passenger ferry from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, to operate between Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Designed by Incat Crowther, the new 150-passenger ferry, Ava Pearl, serves the same 52-mile route as the operator’s other 400-passenger fast ferry, Millennium, built by the Mass.-based shipyard in 1998.

Ultra-Low Wake Ferry Gets Green Light

All American Marine, Inc. and Teknicraft Design, Ltd. have successfully made a proposal to Kitsap Transit to bring a new passenger ferry to Rich Passage. On Tuesday, April 21st, the commissioners of Kitsap Transit unanimously approved $5.3m for the purchase of a 77 ft ultra-low wake Teknicraft catamaran and on May 18th, All American Marine received the signed notice-to-proceed. The high speed passenger catamaran will carry 118 passengers and operate between Bremerton and Seattle, Washington at speeds of 29 to 38 knots.
