Floating on Bubbles: Carnival Corp expands use of Air Lubrication to cut Emissions

As the ship owners globally experiment with technologies to help incrementally cut emissions to meet stringent new IMO mandates, news out of south Florida indicates that Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise company, has made plans to expand the installation and use of Air Lubrication Systems (ALS) to a majority of the cruise line brands in its fleet through 2027; a move the cruise major expects witll generate "significant savings in fuel consumption and carbon emissions" by reducing hull drag by approximately 5% per ship.The pick for air lubrication is the Silverstream System ALS…

Carnival Corp Meets CO2 Reduction Goal

Carnival, Wärtsilä Partner on Ship Performance

Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation & plc have signed a 12-year agreement that aims to strengthen the groups’ existing partnership and joint improvement efforts to maintain the higher levels for cruise ship safety and reliability. The performance-based agreement provides for shared financial incentives and exposure based on outcomes for both companies. The value of the long-term agreement is approximately EUR 900 million. The expected revenues for 24 months, approximately EUR 150 million, will be included in Wärtsilä's order book for the first quarter of 2017.

Björn Rosengren, President and CEO of Wärtsilä Corporation and Micky Arison, Chairman of the Board of Carnival Corporation & plc are pleased about deepening the cooperation to support sustainable and environmentally friendly cruises. Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation & plc have partnered to optimize engine room operations aboard the company's fleet of 101 ships across its nine global brands. Wärtsilä said the partnership will see its solutions tested in pilot projects on several of Carnival Corporation's vessels.

Sustainability Report: Carnival Ahead of Emissions Goal

Carnival Corporation & plc released a report today detailing its sustainability efforts, including initiatives which enabled the company to meet its corporate goal to reduce its rate of CO2 emissions from shipboard operations by 20 percent, a year ahead of its initial plan. Merchant Marine Reserve Program becomes Strategic Sealift Officer Program

After extensive coordination with several Navy organizations and the U.S. Maritime Administration, the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Fleet Readiness and Logistics approved revisions to the latest CNO Instruction (OPNAVINST 1534.lD) transitioning the Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) Program into the Strategic Sealift Officer Program (SSOP) on June 10. The SSOP supports national defense sealift requirements and capabilities, which are executed by Military Sealift Command (MSC). The program provides the Navy with officers that possess sealift, maritime operations, and logistics subject matter expertise, and further hold U.S. Coast Guard credentials as merchant marine officers.
