Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates will launch a multi-billion-dollar clean energy research and development initiative on Monday, the opening day of the U.N. climate change summit in Paris, GreenWire reported Friday. Gates and a group of developing and developed countries will agree to double their research and development budgets to boost clean energy deployment and work collaboratively, according to GreenWire, an energy and climate trade publication, citing government and business officials familiar with the agreement. Access to clean energy technology will play a key role in a global agreement to combat climate change. More than 190 countries will negotiate a new pact in Paris from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11. Kevin Quigley, who built VIGOR’s Everett Shipyard into one of the largest dockside repair centers in the Pacific Northwest, has been named president of VIGOR’s US Fab division. Quigley will oversee all of VIGOR’s new ship construction including ferries, advanced Coast Guard cutters, barges, fishing and cargo vessels. As US Fab president, he also will direct the company’s growing land-based and alternative energy fabrication projects. “The people who’ve built this company have been building ships for nearly a hundred years,” Quigley said.

According to a USA Today report, five U.S. Patent and Trade Office patent applications, made public on July 9, propose slowing hurricanes by pumping cold, deep-ocean water in their paths from barges. If issued, the patents offer 18 years of legal rights to the idea for Bill Gates and co-inventors, including climate scientist Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and the world’s richest man is currently on an Antarctica cruise in one of the largest and most luxurious private super-yachts belonging to his associate Paul Allen. The $250m Octopus with Gates and 17 relatives and friends called in Ushuaia over the weekend to wait for Allen who arrived in a private Boeing 757 and was flown on board in one of the two super yacht’s helicopters. For security reasons the Octopus had to wait for the helicopters in Ushuaia bay. The Gates and Allen group are scheduled to cruise the Antarctic peninsula during ten days before returning to Ushuaia, revealed Sunday Gustavo de Robles, head of Ushuaia port authority. The 413-ft.

It was reported that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gate has purchased an approximate $68.9 million stake – roughly eight percent – of Newport News Shipbuilding. Gates is thought to be the world’s richest man with an estimated fortune in excess of $100B. The purchase would make him one of the shipyard’s largest stockholders. Newport News is the only shipyard in the U.S. capable of building nuclear powered aircraft carriers, and with two miles of waterfront in Virginia boasts the largest ship construction facility in the Western Hemisphere. Newport News Shipbuilding has been the centerpiece of several unsuccessful defense industry consolidation moves in the past year from industry giants General Dynamics and Litton Industries.
