Greece will not tolerate any challenges to its territorial integrity, its prime minister said on Thursday, days after Turkish and Greek coastguard vessels collided close to disputed islets in the Aegean Sea. Each side blamed the other for Monday’s collision off an islet known as Imia in Greek and Kardak in Turkish. They came to the brink of war in 1996 in a sovereignty dispute over the islets. Seeking international support, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras underlined that Greece’s border was also that of the 28-nation European Union, and his foreign minister briefed the head of NATO and the U.S.

A Russian naval intelligence ship sank off Turkey's Black Sea coast on Thursday after colliding with a vessel carrying livestock and all 78 personnel on board the navy ship were evacuated, Turkish officials said. The rescued crew members of the Russian ship Liman were in good health after the collision with the Togo-flagged Youzarsif H, Turkey's Transport Minister Ahmed Arslan said. The incident took place in fog and low visibility 18 miles (29 km) from Kilyos village on the Black Sea coast just north of Istanbul. Turkish authorities dispatched a tugboat and three fast rescue vessels, the coastal safety authority said. Advisers to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim conveyed his sadness over the incident to Russian counterparts, according to sources in his office.

Shipping’s unique role in providing most of everything that the world’s people need and want was once again the focus for an international audience, as Turkey hosted the 2016 World Maritime Day Parallel Event (4-6 November). The event in Istanbul , which focused on the World Maritime Day theme, “Shipping: Indispensable to the World was formally opened by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim, who emphasized that almost everyone on the planet is dependent on shipping, but relatively few are aware of it. “This is a message that needs, and deserves, a wider audience. Almost everyone in the world today relies on shipping to some extent – but very few are aware of it.

The official World Maritime Day Parallel Event has opened in Istanbul, Turkey (4-6 November) with keynote addresses from International Maritime Organization (IMO)  Secretary-General Kitack Lim and Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.    Lim spoke on the World Maritime Day theme of Shipping: Indispensable to the World, emphasizing that almost everyone on the planet is dependent on shipping, but relatively few are aware of it.    The event includes a two-day symposium looking at the challenges and opportunities facing shipping today followed by an opportunity for delegates to experience some of Turkey’s rich maritime culture.

Turkish Navy’s third Milgem class corvette, the F-513 TCG Burgazada, created as part of the MILGEM project, was launched with a ceremony attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım. TCG Burgazada is the third ship of the series built at Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command as part of the MILGEM project that was launched in order to build modern warships upon the 2004 decision of the Defense Industry Executive Committee. The construction of the Burgazada Corvette began on 17 December 2014, at Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command. The 29 blocks of the corvette were built in 18 months and assembled on the slipway. The ship was launched upon its completion 3 months prior to the estimated date on the contracts.

DP World Yarimca has been officially opened for business by the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the presence of senior government officials and executives of DP World. President Erdoğan joined the opening yesterday by teleconference in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communications of the Republic Turkey, Binali Yıldırım; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu; Minister of Environment and Urbanisation of the Republic of Turkey, Fatma Güldemet Sarı; The Republic of Turkey and Prime Ministry and Investment and Promotion Agency, Arda Ermut and DP World Group Chairman and CEO, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem.

Expanded premises for the World Maritime University (WMU) were inaugurated on Monday, May 19, 2015 in Malmö, Sweden, by IMO Secretary-General and WMU Chancellor Koji Sekimizu. WMU is an international educational institute for the maritime community, operating under the auspices of IMO. At close to 6,000m2, WMU’s new facility is nearly double the size of the previous Malmö campus. It provides a new auditorium, multiple research laboratories, seminar rooms and video-conferencing capabilities for hosting international conferences.

The first SMM Istanbul is to be held at the centrally located L¸tfi Kirdar Convention & Exhibition Centre (ICEC) on the European side of Istanbul, from 21 to 23 January 2009. Funding is provided by the Turkish Development Centre for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (KOSGEB), which is supervised by the Turkish Economics Ministry, to all exhibitors that have a production facility in Turkey. KOSGEB funding goes not only to the 75 or so Turkish companies among the 150 exhibitors, but also to foreign companies which have an official company office and production facilities in Turkey. The Turkish Government will also be well represented at the Opening of SMM Istanbul.
