Half a Century at Sea

Siegfried Schmerer already dreamed of becoming a captain as a young boy. Later, as a sailor on a coaster, he suffered from seasickness. Though he thought about giving up, he stuck with it and eventually worked his way up all the way to the bridge. After half a century at sea, Captain Schmerer will sail on his last voyage this September on board the Colombo Express. In Hapag-Lloyd Insights, he takes a look back at his career, such as at the long voyages to Australia in what was then the world’s largest general cargo ship or the 20-meter-high waves near the Azores.

New Hapag-Lloyd Cruise Ship Christened

'Europa 2' has been christened in the Port of Hamburg during the German port's 824th anniversary celebrations. The new cruise ship sailed to the launch site near the riverside district of Blankenese, where Godmother Dana Schweiger officially gave the new ship her name: “I christen you the Europa 2 and wish you and your crew good voyages and safe returns, and may there always be enough water beneath your keel,” she said. Rickmers takes delivery of its Final Two 13,100TEU Ships

Another naming ceremony for two 13,100TEU container vessels being built for the Rickmers Group took place on 31 May at the Ulsan shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries. TAURO RICKMERS and LIBRA RICKMERS are the final two ships in an eight-ship series being built for the Hamburg shipowner for longterm charter to Maersk Line. The two ships were christened by family friends of Rickmers Group Chairman Bertram Rickmers. Mrs Antoinette Zornig named TAURO RICKMERS while Mrs Elke Scharfe named LIBRA RICKMERS.
