Passenger and cargo shipping company Blue Star Line has contracted Deltamarin to continue with the design of Titanic II. The contract covers activities and tasks for the design process, consultancy and project management services.Deltamarin will provide Blue Star Line with outline design services including finalizing and modifying the existing design to comply with the latest rules and regulations. These include the SOLAS 2020 requirements and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).Deltamarin will also further develop the design together with the selected yard and Blue Star Line, and handle the management of consultations with potential shipyards.Blue Star Line Chairman Clive Palmer said Deltamarin was the perfect choice for the Titanic II project.

Jim Clark, a senior manager at Cammell Laird, has clocking 60 years in the ship repair industry, making him one of the U.K.’s longest serving Chief Estimators. The 76-year-old chief estimator has delivering more than 11,000 over the course of his career, having worked with maritime brands from Blue Star Line to his current role at Cammell Laird. Since his first job in 1962 he has delivered estimates for ship repair projects worth circa £100 billion ($129.2 billion) in today’s currency.

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), the world’s leading maritime services provider, has appointed David Mackay as Senior Vice President for its Africa region. Based in Mombasa, Kenya, David will have operational management responsibility for eight countries in the region, with ambitious plans for more country openings in the coming year. As part of a strategic geographical realignment, Africa has now been designated by ISS as a specific region its own right, having previously been managed as part of the larger Middle East, India and Africa region.

Blue Star Line say that Phiip Littlejohn has joined the Titanic Advisory Board: he is the grandson of Alexander James Littlejohn, 1st Class Steward 'RMS Titanic'. Alexander Littlejohn survived the sinking after being ordered to row Lifeboat 13. After the disaster Alexander returned to work for the White Star Line on RMS Olympic, until the outbreak of WW1, in 1914. Blue Star Line say that his grandson Philip lectures throughout the UK and abroad including lecturing on the Titanic 100th Anniversary Cruise in 2012. He took part in a BBC TV documentary where he dived to the wreck of the Titanic.

Blue Star Line in conjunction with German hydrodynamic service and consulting group the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA) has conducted the first model testing of the proposed Titanic II in Germany. A 9.3m wooden model of Titanic II was put through propulsion and power testing in a 300m long tank at HSVA’s Hamburg facilities over four days from September 9-12. “The speed and power performance model testing is one of the critical aspects for a prototype vessel and needs to be verified before a construction contract is completed.

Blue Star Line Chairman Clive Palmer appoints Lloyd’s Register to review design and safety features for the Titanic II project. Mr Palmer said Lloyd’s Register had more than 250 years’ experience with passenger ships and would review key design drawings, calculations and studies for Titanic II. He said the appointment of Lloyd’s Register further strengthened the team that had been assembled to deliver Titanic II in 2016. “I would like to welcome Lloyd’s Register to the Titanic II team and look forward to working closely with them on this landmark project,” Mr Palmer said.

Australian mining entrepreneur Clive Palmer intends the ship to largely recreate the design and decor of the ill-fated original. The original design of the Titanic will be modified to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, reports the China Daily. White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. Some 1,500 people died on Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. However, Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, declined to make a similar boast.

The project, which will take the state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard Co Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, three years to complete, is financed by Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, China Daily reported. Plans call for the Titanic II to make its maiden voyage from England to the United States in 2016 with 900 crew members and 2,400 passengers, following the trans-Atlantic track of the original Titanic. Former chairman and founder of Containership Agency, Inc., Rolf D. Hartmann, died on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at his home in Manesota Key, Fla. He was 68 years old. Originally from Bremen, Germany, Hartmann descends from long line of family ship owners and operators. His father was founder and director of F.W. Hartmann & Co., Inc., which provided steamship agency and related services, and his grandfather was Managing Director of Hansa Line of Germany. Rolf Hartmann graduated from Phillips Exeter and Harvard University. After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard as a commissioned officer, he spent his entire career in the U.S. shipping industry. Founder of Containership Agency, Inc., an agent for foreign steamship companies, he served as its president and CEO beginning in 1971.
