Hybrid drives: Siemens sends in the machines

Encouraged by the success of a hybrid drives program, Siemens is going all out in Norway to automate production of that core marine energy storage enabler, the lithium battery. Offshore service vessel charterers, rig owners, ferry operators and ship owners are the target market. Trondheimā€™s technical university and a recent history of hosting battery makers and system integrators has made it launchpad for new applications involving the new BlueDrive Plus C drives and batteries.Siemensā€™ Norwegian head of strategy and business developmentā€¦

Nominees Announced For Three Nor-Shipping Awards

Nor-Shipping announced the nominees for the 2013 Nor-Shipping Awards which recognize achievements in three different areas ā€“ energy efficiency, innovative ship design and young entrepreneurship. HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway will present the awards when they are announced at the Opening Conference on June 4. The Energy Efficiency Award (previously Clean Ship Award) pays tribute to the ship with the greatest contribution towards energy efficiency in relation to its function or operation.

Tidewater Orders Two LEEVAC Platform Supply Vessels

LEEVAC Shipyards Jennings LLC, Jennings, LA, announced it has signed contracts with Tidewater Marine, LLC of New Orleans, LA to build two LEEVAC Design Services ā€œLDS ā€ Platform Supply Vessel (PSV), a 300ā€™ x 62ā€™ x 24ā€™ diesel electric PSV with options for two additional vessels. The LDS 300 DE PSV will have a deadweight capacity of 5400 LTs and will carry more than 17,600 barrels of liquid mud. It will be powered by four Caterpillar Model 3516C Tier 3 IMO II Marine variable speed diesel propulsion generator sets rated at 2100kw each.
