Italian Navy Opts for Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine

Rolls-Royce signed a contract with Fincantieri to provide MT30 gas turbines to power the Italian Navy’s new multi-purpose amphibious vessel. The Derby-based company will supply two of its MT30 gas turbines to power a 20,000-tonne landing helicopter dock vessel, which will be the second largest ship in Italy’s navy. Based on Rolls’ Trent 800 jet engine used on aircraft such as the Boeing 777, the MT30 is already installed on the Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and is due to be used in Type 26 frigates when work on them begins. The ship will be built by Fincantieri under the Legge Navale ‘Naval Law’ – a major investment programme to renew the Italian naval fleet.

Malaysia confirmed early on Thursday that a piece of a wing washed up on an Indian Ocean island beach last week was from Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, the first trace of the plane found since it vanished last year with 239 people on board. "Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370," Prime Minister Najib Razak said in an early morning televised address. "I would like to assure all those affected by this tragedy that the government of Malaysia is committed to do everything within our means to find out the truth of what happened," Najib said.

Ballast Water Leadership

Richard j. Douglas

Admiral Paul Zukunft, the new U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, could fill the BWT leadership void. Global efforts to combat the spread of invasive species in ballast water are hampered by a leadership void so serious that in April the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) discouraged further ratifications of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) invasive species convention. Admiral Paul Zukunft, the new U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, could fill that void and get those efforts onto the right track. The United States has been blessed with strong Coast Guard Commandants.

Aircraft, Ships Continue Search for Missing Jetliner

Reuters reported that aircraft and ships continued to brave rough weather conditions in search of objects floating in remote seas off Australia, generating what is now described as a "credible lead" in the prolonged search for the Malaysian jet. The large objects, which Australian officials said were spotted by satellite four days ago in one of the remotest parts of the globe, are the most promising find in days as searchers scour a vast area for the plane lost with 239 people on board. A Norwegian merchant ship arrived in the area on Thursday, but officials cautioned it could take days to confirm if the objects were parts of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777. Malaysia's government said the search would continue elsewhere despite the sighting in the southern Indian Ocean.

Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine Get Certification

The Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbine has completed a major development milestone, receiving certification from a leading verification agency. The gas turbine has received DNV (Det Norske Veritas) design approval, certifying the engine at 36MW to DNV's rules for classification of High Speed, Light Craft and Naval Surface Vessels. ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification test running, which will satisfy all United States Navy requirements, has also been started and will be completed in mid-2004. The MT30 has been selected to power the Integrated Power System (IPS) Engineering Development Model (EDM) for the US Navy's DD(X) multimission destroyer programme. This order marks the company's entry into the US Navy large gas turbine market.

Lockheed Selects Rolls-Royce to Power LCS

Rolls-Royce has been selected by Lockheed Martin to provide MT30 gas turbine engines and waterjets for up to two ships of the Littoral Combat Ship program (LCS), the next generation of US Navy warship. LCS is being designed and built to improve the US Navy's operational capability in the littorals, or coastal waters. Rolls-Royce's selection as the engine and waterjet provider for the Lockheed Martin ships leaves it well positioned for the program. The Lockheed Martin ship design incorporates two Rolls-Royce MT30 marine gas turbines driving four Rolls-Royce high-speed waterjets. The first vessel is due to be launched in December 2006 by Lockheed Martin. General Dynamics will also construct up to two ships for the same class.

Rolls-Royce MT30 Achieves US Navy Milestone

The Rolls-Royce MT30 has achieved a major development milestone -- receiving American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification, a US Navy requirement for operation. The 36MW marine gas turbine is already well positioned for two US Navy programs, having been selected for the Lockheed Martin Flight 0 Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the DD(X) multi-mission destroyer Engineering Demonstrator Model (EDM). The MT30 is also included in the baseline design for the two proposed Royal Navy aircraft carriers and is being actively considered for the French PA2 Aircraft Carrier and the Franco-Italian FREMM frigate program. Saul Lanyado, Rolls-Royce President -- Marine, said: "This is an excellent achievement, crucial to our success on two key US defense programs.

Test Site Validates Navy’s New Power System

The surface combatant Integrated Power System (IPS) propulsion Engineering Development Model (EDM) for the U.S. Navy’s new Zumwalt-class DDG 1000 destroyer is being tested at the Land-Based Test Site (LBTS) at the Ships Systems Engineering Station, Philadelphia, PA. The new destroyer will be an all-electric ship. Unlike conventional arrangements where the installed prime mover devotes power to main propulsion, the Zumwalt-class ships will have two large gas turbine generators and two smaller ones that provide power that can be used for propulsion, weapons or ship services. Efficient power management makes the ship’s installed power available to all of the electric loads throughout the ship.

BV Approval for Rolls-Royce

Bureau Veritas has awarded basic concept approval (approval in principal) to the Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine power station for LNG carrier propulsion in conjunction with electric drive. The MT30, producing 36MW, is an aero-derived gas turbine which has eighty per cent commonality with the well-known Rolls-Royce Trent 800 aero engine which has been in service for ten years powering the Boeing 777 aircraft. Compact and reliable, gas turbine power is the next step forward for the propulsion of LNG carriers. The approval in principal was issued by Bureau Veritas after a review of the technical documentation submitted by Rolls-Royce. It is the first stage of the overall assessment of the gas turbine power station, which will ultimately be formalised by full concept approval.
