Rolls-Royce to Cut Up to 2,500 Jobs

Rolls-Royce (RR.L) said on Tuesday it would cut up to 2,500 jobs as its new chief executive seeks to build a more efficient business, the latest boss to attempt to revamp one of Britain's most prestigious engineering companies.Over the last decade, Rolls-Royce, whose engines and systems are used on the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 as well as ships, submarines and in power generation, has been through several restructurings, axing more than 13,000 jobs.Tufan Erginbilgic, who took over in January, is the latest CEO to try to tackle the company's inefficiencies.

Rolls-Royce named former BP executive Tufan Erginbilgic as its new chief executive to replace outgoing boss Warren East, a move analysts say will help drive profits at the British engine maker.East, whose seven years at Rolls were marked by costly troubles with the blades on its engines and the COVID-19 pandemic, will step down at the end of this year, with Erginbilgic taking over on Jan.

Oceans Will Have More Plastic than Fish by 2050

The world’s oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050 if current business practices are continued, according to a report released by the  World Economic Forum (WEF). Researchers warned 8 million metric tons of plastics currently find their way into the ocean every year - the equivalent of one truckload every minute. At current rates, this will worsen to four truckloads per minute in 2050 and outstrip native life to become the largest mass inhabiting the oceans. The report 'The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the Future of Plastics' by the WEF and Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which urges more recycling and reduced waste, goes on to note that the production of plastic materials has increased twentyfold since 1964.

Boeing Participate in Racing Yacht Recyling Project

Boeing and Oracle Team USA (winner of the 34th America's Cup) are collaborating to recycle 7,000 pounds (about 3,175 kilograms) of carbon fiber of USA-71, a yacht built for the America's Cup campaign in 2003. The hull and mast of the racing yacht will be processed and repurposed, a first-of-its-kind effort for what will likely be the largest carbon structure ever recycled. Rolls-Royce Unveils Lego Jet Engine

The engine, which is one of the most complex Lego structures ever built, is a half size replica of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 which powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The one of a kind Lego structure shows the complex inner workings of a jet engine and took four people eight weeks to complete. Including 152,455 Lego bricks, the engine weighs 307 kg and is over 2 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Over 160 separate engine components were built and joined together in order to replicate a real jet engine.

Westport Shipyard on the Future of Government Craft

Westport Shipyard of Westport, Wash. recently launched its Global Response Cutter (GRC-43) prototype, constructed of a composite material the company believes to be the future of boat building. The launching of the 143-ft vessel also marks the yard’s return to commercial boat building. Westport Shipyard began in 1964, building commercial fishing vessels for the Northwest fleet and the occasional pleasure boat. In the early 90s Westport built the high-speed ferries for the Catalina service, but shortly afterward the company segued over to serving the yachting industry exclusively.

TUI Orders 8 Container Ships

TUI AG has ordered eight container ships to expand its shipping division, AFX reported. The company said 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners from a previously announced order and 12 jets ordered by merger partner First Choice Holidays will create 'one of the biggest 787 fleets with the earliest delivery dates in Europe.' TUI in December said it had outstanding orders for 65 Boeing aircraft, including 24 previously ordered planes. Source: AFX
