Fire Out on Esperanza Star

The Philippine Coast Guard has declared “fire out” on the ferry Esperanza Star after attending then scene when a distress call was made at 0400 on June 18. The vessel was sailing in the waters of Panglao, Bohol, with 78 passengers and 59 crew onboard when the fire broke out at the aft of the vessel. Manila Ports Utilization Remains Healthy

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) informed that the cargo volume in the country has registered a modest hike in the first seven months of the year despite the sluggish performances from almost all aspects of local and foreign trade.Latest data from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) showed that Philippine cargo traffic totaled 147.271 million metric tons (MMT) in the January to July 2018 period or a 2% hike compared to the 144.412 MMT handled in the same period last year.The data also showed that foreign cargo throughput handled is at 87.639 MMT or some 1.64% higher than the figure posted a year earlier wherein import volume handled is at 53.654 MMT and export traffic at 33.985 MMT.

“K” Line Group Holds Environmental Awards 2018 Ceremony

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line), one of the largest Japanese transportation companies, held the Award Ceremony for “K” Line Group Environmental Awards 2018 on June 5, 2018. High-speed Ferry Delivered in the Philippines

A second 30-meter high-speed passenger ferry for the 2Go Group, MV Saint Sariel, has been delivered in the Philippines, shipbuilder Austal Limited announced. Austal was awarded a A$13 million contract for two Incat Crowther designed catamarans in June 2016 and construction of both vessels has been completed at the Austal Philippines shipyard in Balamban, Cebu. Passengers Stranded in Philippine Ports

Hundreds of boat passengers bound for Leyte, Bohol and other parts of the Visayas got stranded  in the different ports of Cebu as the Cebu Coast Guard barred small vessels from traveling, say local media. This is due to a gale warning raised by the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in the Visayas. The authority has issues the order to disallow vessels weighing 250 gross tons or lower not to sail. In the Philippines a large scale rescue of ferry passengers, on the other side of the world, a British fishing boat crew is airlifted to safety, and a man is plucked from rough seas off Aberdeen breakwater. A rescue team from Philippine Coast Guard search and rescue vessel, BRP EDSA II (SARV-002) evacuated 132 passengers from the MV Our Lady Of All Nation after the inter-island ferry ran aground at Danajon Bank, Bohol. The crew of the sinking 18-m fishing vessel RACHEL JAYNE lll  sent out a Mayday as they took to a liferaft 26 miles ENE of Tynemouth Piers.

Update: Philippines Grounding Incidents

The Philippines Couast Guard issued an update on three recent grounding incidents near Central Visayas. The MV Subic Bay 1, which ran aground at Bantolinao Point, Cebu, arrived safely at Gothong Wharf, Cebu at 11:30 p.m. yesterday, November 16. Another vessel that also grounded at Bantolinao Point, The MV Joyful Star, is awaiting towing Coast Guard Station (CGS) Cebu is coordinating with the shipping company. All passengers from the vessel were safely transported to Porter Yacht Club in Liloan, Cebu, in good condition and assisted by a Jasper Roble, a representative of Roble Shipping Incorporated. A third vessel, Our Lady of All Nation, ran aground at Danajon Bank, Bohol. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing with personnel of to Coast Guard vessel BRP EDSA II (SARV-002).

Three Vessels Ground in the Philippines

The Philippines Coast Guard Central Vizayas Action Center reported today three maritime incidents that occurred within their area of responsibility last night, January 15. MV Joyful Star with 237 passengers onboard ran aground yesterday around 11:45 p.m. at the vicinity of Bantolinao Point, Cebu while enroute from Maasin, Leyte to Cebu. Said vessel, with 1097.87 GT, is skippered by Captain Alexander Canete of Roble Shipping Incorporated. The Coast Guard is still transferring passengers of MV Joyful Star using rubber boats to DF 318 and MTug Janggo to Porter Yacht Club, Cebu. Additionally, MV Subic Bay 1, a cargo container vessel, ran aground at the same area at 2:44 a.m. today en route from Nasipit, Butuan to Pier 7, Port of Cebu.

Operations Resume at Typhoon-stricken Port

The Philippines' Ports Authority has resumed full commercial operations at the port of Tacloban which was closed for about 12 days after Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) struck. The Ports Authority and International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) worked round-the-clock to restart operations at the port, which is expected to become the relief hub. Cargo handling equipment from ICTSI to help temporarily run the port of Tacloban until it recovers from damage caused by the storm is due to arrive today.

Typhoon Leaves Philippines in Shambles

At least 10,000 people are feared dead after Typhoon Haiyan bombarded the Philippines last Friday, November 8, with death toll figures expected to continue rising. The storm, recorded as one of the most powerful in history to hit land, produced wind gusts of more than 200 miles per hour, 15-meter waves and seven-meter storm surges, and has destroyed roughly 70-80% of structures in its path, according to estimations by the United Nations. Philippines president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has declared the nation in a state of national calamity.

Philippine Coast Guard Assists Relief Efforts in Bohol

Two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) multi-purpose vessels in Manila were dispatched on Thursday, October 17 in the Province of Bohol to transport various relief items for the affected locals following the magnitude 7.2 killer earthquake that rocked the Central Visayas region last Tuesday. PCG vice commandant for operations Rear Admiral Luis Tuason Jr. said that buoy tender ship BRP-Corregidor (AE-891) and the 35-meter search and rescue vessel BRP-Romblon (SARV-3502) are heading to Bohol on Wednesday to deliver the more than 10,000 sacks of family food packs provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in cooperation with US AID and World Food Program for the families and residents affected by the said quake.

Chinese Ship Disabled North of Tubbataha Reef

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reports another foreign vessel in trouble off Palawan, to be taken in tow. The Chinese cargo ship M/V Tai An Hai reported engine trouble and was drifting late some 96 kilometers south of Tubbataha Reef, reports The Philippine Star. The M/V Tai An Hai was on passage from Singapore to Tagbilaran, Bohol to deliver 5,900 tons of limestone when the ship's main engines shut down. Initial reports from the area indicated rough sea conditions had hammered the vessel and the ship's captain was worried that the ship would run aground in shallow waters. The Coast Guard’s BRP Pampanga was deployed to render assistance to the Chinese vessel, and an ocean-going tugboat, the Harbor Star is also on its way to assist. Source: The Philippine Star
