INTERTANKO Objects to Port of Trieste Fines
The Port of Trieste has advised that, with effect from March 3 2010, vessels using fuels with a sulphur content exceeding 0.1% by mass (in contravention of EU Directive 2005/33/EC) will be prosecuted with fine of between Euros 15,000 and 150,000 (usually 30,000 for the first offence). Exemption to the law will not be granted anymore and all eventual special authorizations issued in the past are cancelled, it states. INTERTANKO said that this means ship and port safety may be sacrificed purely in order to generate local harbor funds. Boiler Explosion Resulting from Complacency
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) issued a Report concerning a boiler explosion on the bulk carrier MEDI MONACO in the port of Geelong, Victoria on May 17, 2003 during which three engineers were burned. When the boiler flame failed, a rating attempted several times to relight it. The third engineer then opened the boiler in an attempt to adjust it. He was burned severely when the boiler exploded. Two other engineers then went to inspect the boiler when it exploded again, burning them slightly. Investigation revealed that this boiler frequently failed and that the engineers had become complacent about safety measures. The unsuccessful attempts to relight the boiler caused unburned fuel to accumulate in the boiler and on the refractory lining.
Aalborg Reports Record Marine Boiler Sales in 2001
Aalborg Industries closed year 2001 with the highest total of marine boilers ever sold during a year. Aalborg also reported that its marine turnover was also the highest ever, and the same goes for the order backlog of marine boilers. The new MISSION series of boilers had an exceptional year during which especially the MISSION D-type boilers made a breakthrough in the Korean and Chinese tanker markets. A steadily increasing number of Aalborg Industries boilers for Japan, Korea and China are contracted for production at our boiler factory in Qingdao/China, and the production facilities are again being expanded while training in the use of new technology and in quality assurance are ongoing.
