Wärtsilä Names Håkan Agnevall as President and CEO

Finland-based marine engine and technology provider Wärtsilä has appointed Håkan Agnevall as its next president and CEO.Agnevall, who is currently president of Volvo's bus division, will start in his role no later than in April 2021, succeeding Jaakko Eskola, who will continue with the company as a senior advisor and executive until he retires on June 30, 2021, after 22 years with the group.Agnevall has been with the Volvo Group  since 2013. Partners Aim to Build Zero-emissions Ferries in Belfast

A Belfast Maritime Consortium led by Artemis Technologies has won a £33 million ($41 million) U.K. government innovation grant to develop zero emissions ferries in Northern Ireland’s capital. Bombardier to Build $4.5bln Cairo Monorail

Canadian manufacturing group Bombardier announced it had signed a multi-billion dollar agreement to build two automated monorail lines in Egypt’s capital Cairo.According to a press statement, Orascom Construction, Bombardier Transportation, and Arab Contractors signed an agreement with the National Authority for Tunnels in Cairo to design and build the monorail lines.On completion of the construction phase, the consortium will be responsible for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of both lines for 30 years.The total value of the design, build and O&M contract exceeds $4.5 billion US (4.1 billion euro). Bombardier Transportation´s share is $2.85 billion US (2.6 billion euro). Orascom Construction’s share of the overall contract is close to $900 million US.

Bombardier Wins USD453mln Chinese Govt Rail Contract

Global mobility solution provider Bombardier Transportation's Chinese joint venture (JV) has won a $453 million contract to supply 168 high-speed train cars to state-owned China Railway Corp (CRC).According to Bombardier Sifang (Qingdao) Transportation (BST), the JV, it is the second order win this year for China’s growing high-speed network."The new contract, awarded by CRC, is to supply 168 CR400AF new Chinese standard high-speed train cars and is valued at approximately CNY 3.1 billion ($453 million)," said the release.Bombardier Transportation owns 50% of the shares in BST, which is consolidated by Bombardier Transportation’s partner CRRC Sifang Co., Ltd.

Some positive market indicators could presage an investment revival in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico – and beyond. The good news, reported by Bloomberg, is that in the third quarter of 2016, the largest oil companies increased cash from operations by nearly $26 billion. This reflects a 67 percent increase from the previous quarter and more than twice the amount of the first quarter of 2016. Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, Total and BP indicated that the increase was due to lower spending, increased output and rising crude prices, although the numbers were still below last year’s numbers.

Canada Non-resource Exports to Surge in 2016

Canadian non-resource exports should post healthy gains this year, the country's trade financing agency said on Monday, a development the central bank is counting on to help revive an economy hobbled by weak global energy prices. Export Development Canada predicted the consumer goods, automotive and aerospace sectors would post double-digit growth in 2016 on the back of a robust U.S. economy. Industrial machinery exports should advance by 7 percent, it said. Overall exports are seen rising a modest 2 percent this year, held back by a 14-percent drop in the value of energy shipments. Canada is a major energy exporter and has been hit hard by slumping crude oil prices.

A Hundred Chinese Boats Encroach in Malaysian Waters

Malaysia has said that more than 100 Chinese fishing boats have been spotted within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off Sarawak in the latest incident involving Chinese vessels in the disputed waters. The boats were sighted near Beting Patinggi Ali, also known as Luconia Shoals, about 100km off the coast of Miri in Sarawak. Malaysia planned to take action against them. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the government has instructed the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to deploy its assets to monitor the situation. "Three MMEA vessels have been deployed to the area. The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) assets are also there.

Asian Nations Eye Stronger Maritime Surveillance Capabilities

The market for spy planes and surveillance platforms is buoyant in Southeast Asia, where countries are facing off against China – and each other - in the resource-rich South China Sea, industry insiders at the Singapore Airshow said. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam have all been seeking information from suppliers, trade sources said, as maritime patrol aircraft and intelligence gathering platforms become more of a priority. Some of the kit is needed for traditional activities such as counter-piracy, fisheries protection or disaster response, but China's growing assertiveness in the region's seas is looming increasingly large in the thinking of defense planners.

Maritime Spy Kit Installed on New Bombardier Planes

Sweden's Saab said on Wednesday it plans to put its Swordfish maritime patrol system on two new aerial platforms as demand rises for ways to tackle maritime threats, including the proliferation of submarines. The move to put an enhanced version of its Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems on new airframes in partnership with Canada's Bombardier emerged at the Singapore Airshow as tensions escalated in the South China Sea. Saab said the system, currently available on the out-of-production Saab 2000 turboprop airliner, would now be offered on Bombardier's Global 6000 business jet and the Q400 turboprop. Boeing Expects First Maritime Spy Plane Sale in Next Few Years

Boeing Co (BA.N) is in "very serious conversations" with five customers about its new Maritime Surveillance Aircraft, a long-range spy plane based on Bombardier's 605 business jet, an executive said on Tuesday. Robert Schoeffling, a senior manager with Boeing's military aircraft division, said it was difficult to predict when the planemaker would receive a first order for the aircraft, but it was likely to happen in the next year or two. Schoeffling gave no names, but said the five potential customers were in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Europe. He said events including the recent focus on disputed man-made islands in the South China Sea were fueling interest.

Caspian Sea Port Link Opened

President Nursultan Nazarbayev has formally opened the Borzhakty – Ersai railway. The 13·9 km branch from the Aktau - Uzen line will serve a port which is being developed on the Caspian Sea near Kuryk. Construction of the line including the laying of 22·3 km of track was undertaken by Kamkor, with work starting in October 1 2014. Bombardier has supplied EBI Lock 950 interlockings. The initial traffic on the railway will include materials for the construction of the port facilities. The line is expected to boost freight shipped to the country’s sea ports by rail. The volume of freight transhipped via Kazakh ports reached 10.3mn tonnes in 2014, 2% up from 2013. Of this the volume of freight shipped by rail was 6.2mn tonnes, a 10% increase y/y.

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has begun a new era, as Rear Adm. Mathias W. Winter-a decorated aviator with advanced degrees in both computer science and national resource strategy-was sworn in as the chief of naval research (CNR). Streetcars Shipped from Germany to Tacoma

Two streetcars, shipped from Germany, arrived at the Port of modern Bombardier Flexity streetcars Tacoma last week. They are being transported on special-purpose road trailers to Vancouver, B.C. The streetcars arrived in Tacoma onboard the Tomar, a Wallenius Wilhelmsen vessel on December 2, after a 10,460-mile journey from Germany (Bremerhaven-Zeebrugge-Southampton-Panama Canal-Port Hueneme-Tacoma). Each of the two cars is manufactured by Bombardier Transportation and about 105 ft long. Transporting the cars from Tacoma to Vancouver, B.C.

Iveco Motors Of North America, a subsidiary of Iveco Motors is making waves in the marine industry with the introduction of the NEF 370, the first engine in its new line of marine engines for the pleasure craft industry, from the NEF series of diesel engines. The six cylinder, high performance NEF 370 model features an electronic common rail fuel injection system. With 370 hp and weighing just 1,312 lbs, this engine has a power to weight ratio of 3.54lbs/hp. In addition, the design of the four-stroke NEF engine requires less routine maintenance. "Diesel is becoming the preferred choice in marine power as manufacturers and boaters alike realize the benefits," says Vincenzo Perrone, General Manager of Iveco Motors of North America.

Harland & Wolff Wins $350M Order

Northern Irish shipyard Harland and Wolff has won a provisional order worth more than $350 million to build two luxury cruise liners, company officials said. The shipyard, which earlier this month secured its future with a $450 million order for four passenger ferries, said it had been awarded a letter of intent by cruise line Luxus Holdings. The 28,000 ton ships will carry 380 passengers and measure more than 656 ft. (200 m), officials said. Luxus said the ships were designed to mimic the standards of a large luxury yacht. The order follows news that Northern Ireland's largest manufacturing sector employer, Bombardier Aerospace, plans to create 1,200 new jobs over the next two years at its Belfast-based aerospace unit Short Brothers Plc.
