TASS reports that Vladimir Monomakh Borey class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (Project 955) will complete the voyage to the Pacific Fleet before the yearend, quoting Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Vladimir Korolev. The Russian Navy has started receiving fourth-generation Project 955 Borei-class (Dolgorukiy-class) submarines recently. It has three of them now - the Yuri Dolgoruky, Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh. The Prince Vladimir is due for delivery to the Pacific Fleet next year. Four more ships in the class are due before 2020. Thus, the Russian SSBN fleet will comprise 15 submarines, if the Project 667BDR family is decommissioned.

The Russia strategic nuclear-powered submarine 'Vladimir Monomakh' has left the Sevmash shipyard to start sea trials in the White Sea, reports the Barents Observer. Vladimir Monomakh is the third of a total of eight Borey-class nuclear-powered missile submarines that Russia plans to build by 2020. A second Borey-class nuclear-powered submarine, the 'Alexander Nevsky', will most likely be delivered to the Russian Navy around the end of November or early December this year, reports Ria Novosti, citing Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation. The state sea trials of the Alexander Nevsky were suspended in September, 2013, following an unsuccessful launch of a Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile from the submarine. However, the trials of the submarine were resumed in October, and the vessel is expected to be put into service with the Navy even without additional Bulava testing.

Russia’s Sevmash shipyard will float out a third 'Borey-class' strategic nuclear submarine, the 'Vladimir Monomakh' at year's end. The Borey class submarines are expected to form the core of Russia's strategic submarine fleet, replacing the aging Project 941 (NATO Typhoon class) and Project 667 class (Delta-3 and Delta-4) boats. Russia plans to build eight Borey and Borey-A class subs by 2020, reports Ria Novosti. Two Borey class vessels, the Yury Dolgoruky and the Alexander Nevsky, have been already built and are undergoing sea trials.

Russia’s first two Borey-class strategic submarines will be ultimately deployed with the Pacific Fleet says Defense Minister. The submarines Yury Dolgoruky and the Alexander Nevsky are undertaking test runs in the White Sea and are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2012. “I am absolutely certain that the first two subs will be initially placed with the Northern Fleet and will be redeployed to the Pacific Fleet after all the infrastructure there is ready,” said First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov recently.

"The Yury Dolgoruky will complete an initial sea trial on June 7. If all testing goes successfully, the boat will be accepted into service in the near future," a Sevmash source told RIA Novosti, adding that no tests of the boat's future primary armament, the Bulava ICBM, are planned during the sea trial. The Bulava will be test-fired again this year, but from another boat of this class, the Alexander Nevsky, and if the test is successful, the two systems will be accepted into the service this year. Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and former navy commander Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky had previously said that the Borey class boats and Bulava, would enter service this fall. The 24,000 ton displacement Borey class boats will carry 16 Bulava missiles.

On May 25, it was reported by Ria Novosti that the ministry and the USC failed again to agree final contract terms for Borey delivery, despite the intervention of President Vladimir Putin, but in a swift turnaround USC spokesman Alexei Kravchenko has told Ria Novosti he had information that the contract for the five submarines had been signed. The Russian Navy is to receive at least 10 new Borey class strategic nuclear submarines by 2020. The submarines, to be armed with Bulava ballistic missiles, are expected to constitute the core of Russia's strategic ballistic missile submarine force after 2018. Then-prime minister Putin said last year that the procurement of new warships and submarines for the Navy would be a priority over the next decade.

Russia’s Defense Ministry and the United Shipbuilding Corporation failed again to agree final contract terms for delivery of the new Borey class (Project 955) strategic nuclear submarine, despite the intervention of President Vladimir Putin who wants the submarines ot form the core of Russia's strategic ballistic missile force by 2018. Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said his ministry and the submarine manufacturer would return to talks in the future to agree a final price for the Borey boats by 2015. “We agreed that we will return to price talks in 2015," he said. "Should the industry be able to demonstrate it has incurred any substantial costs, we may accept them, that is, recalculate them,” Serdyukov told journalists after the meeting with Putin. He did not state a price.

The Yury Dolgoruky, a Borey-class nuclear missile submarine, was built at the Sevmash plant in the northern Arkhangelsk Region. It will be equipped with the Bulava ballistic missile, which is adapted from the Topol-M (SS-27). The submarine is 580 feet, a body diameter around 42 feet, and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles. Two other Borey-class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash plant, with a fourth submarine on the future production schedule list.
