Disabled Bulk Carrier Towed into Botany Bay

A bulk carrier that lost power in bad weather off Australia's east coast has been towed into Botany Bay, near Sydney, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.The Hong Kong-registered Portland Bay left Port Kembla on Sunday and experienced engine failure with 21 people on board, about 1.2 kilometers east of Garie Beach, NSW on Monday morning.The vessel had been anchored off Cronulla Beach since early Monday evening after breaking free from towing cables attached to smaller tugs which had been attempting to move the vessel away from the shore.AMSA…

BP Sends US Diesel to Australia

Second such cargo in a year - traders; cargo loads from Cherry Point, heading to Botany Bay. Oil major BP Plc is shipping diesel from the United States to Australia in an unusual shipping flow, several industry sources told Reuters on Thursday. The Jupiter Express carrying about 35,000 tonnes of diesel loaded from BP's Cherry Point, Washington refinery on June 29 and is currently headed to Botany Bay, New South Wales in Australia, shipping data on Thomson Reuters Eikon showed. BP declined to comment. Australia imports most of its diesel requirements from Singapore, South Korea and Japan but several refineries undergoing maintenance and prompt demand from India has tightened supply of the fuel in Asia, traders said.

Indian diesel cargoes are being shipped to Australia in a rare move as rising competition from new Middle East refineries has made it more difficult to land the fuel in India's core traditional markets in Europe and Africa. Marine Rescue Port Hacking’s new $270,000 offshore rescue vessel commissioned at the unit’s new home base at the Hungry Point Reserve, Cronulla. Emergency Services Minister Michael Gallacher and Federal Member for Cook Scott Morrison joinrf  the MRNSW Board, Commissioner Stacey Tannos and volunteers from the Port Hacking unit for the commissioning ceremony for Port Hacking 30. Commissioner Tannos said the 8.5 metre Kevlacat was able to travel up to 15 nautical miles offshore, making it a valuable addition to marine search and rescue resources in Greater Sydney.

Botany Bay Container Terminal Construction Contract Awarded

Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) awards Laing O’Rourke the civil works contract for Australia's new Port Botany Terminal 3. The contract marks the start of the on-ground works of HPH’s A$500 million investment for the development of a new container terminal. Laing O’Rourke will construct an A$150 million civil and rail infrastructure, representing the first phase of the newly reclaimed Botany Bay expansion. The terminal is scheduled to begin operations in 2013. St. Johns Ship Building delivers two tugs to Smithbridge for high profile terminal construction project in Botany Bay. St. Johns Ship Building of Palatka, Fla. delivered two custom built twin screw push tugs, the Lady Shayne and the Lady Dashelle, for Smithbridge of Brisbane Australia. Botany Bay Ship Pilot Training

Botany Bay was replicated for an Australian-first marine emergency training exercise that Sydney Pilot Service commissioned for four of its pilots. The wholly owned subsidiary of Sydney Ports Corporation recently conducted the new commercial Advanced Manned Model Pilot Training program at the Australian Ship Handling Centre at Port Ash. Participants had to pilot model ships, 1/25th the size of an actual ship, through simulated emergencies within the replicated Botany Bay. The bay was recreated using buoys, beacons, piles and temporary wharf lines.

Faster and cheaper and more efficient. Nearly everyone agrees that the rapid change from break-bulk cargo handling to the containership has been revolutionary. It is perhaps the most startling development since the shift from sail to steam. In the world of shipping, the change has been so profound that we can readily refer to it as paradigm shift. How do we explain the change? Professional historians are often reluctant to attribute major cultural changes to a single individual. Many factors, large and small, play into the making of any major change so that historians typically try to avoid "the great man" explanation.
