Rotterdam port mull power-to-gas-plant development

Six Rotterdam-based parties will investigate how sustainably generated electricity, converted into hydrogen, can be used in the production of fuels. TNO, Stedin, Smartport, Uniper, BP Refinery Rotterdam and Port of Rotterdam Authority will investigate the technical and economic feasibility of a power-to-gas plant in the Rotterdam port area, as well as the necessary amendments to regulations. The parties above signed a cooperation agreement to this end on 18 January 2017. The construction of wind farms in the North Sea means that a large amount of 'green electricity' will become available in the coming decades and will be landed via the Tennet grid at the Maasvlakte among other places. Using electrolysis, this electricity can split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen.

US Crude Ends at 6-yr Low on China Yuan Devaluing, OPEC Data

U.S. crude settled at a more than six-year low on Tuesday after China's currency devaluation raised questions about oil demand from the No.2 consumer, and a new OPEC estimate showed non-member producers were likely to keep output high despite low prices. A BP refinery outage in Whiting, Indiana that could last at least a month, idling some 240,000 barrels per day of crude distillation, added to the bearish sentiment, traders said. U.S. crude fell $1.88, or more than 4 percent, to $43.08 a barrel, its lowest settlement since March 2009, and about $1 above the 2015 contract low on March 18. Brent fell $1.23, or 2.4 percent, to $49.18 a barrel, paring more than half of its gains in a rally on Monday.

Koole Expands Rotterdam Operations

Koole Terminals has begun operations at the storage facility for petrol and diesel in Pernis that it recently acquired from BP. The companies have a long-standing relationship. The newly acquired terminal is adjacent to the existing Koole terminal. The acquired terminal has a capacity of 200,000 cubic metres. It has its own jetty for sea-going vessels and a loading station for tankers. The terminal is connected to the BP refinery in Europort by pipeline. BP is leasing back part of the storage facility it sold to Koole, as well as the truck loading station, on the basis of a long-term contract. Koole Terminals has terminals in Zaandam, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and in the United Kingdom and Poland, with a total capacity of two million cubic metres.

Feature: MTS Rosette: State of the Art Inland Tank Ship

Jaap van de Guchte Senior stands on the port side half way up the ship's 110-m length. With hand signals, two fingers pointing aft, he directs the helmsman to move the precise two meters for alignment of the tanker's cargo manifolds and those on the BP refinery dock. This will be the first cargo for the new motor tank ship Rosette. It is owned by Jaap Sr. and his two sons. In the elevated wheel house aft one of those sons and the captain for this trip, Jaap Jr., watches as one of his crew stands at the futuristically styled control console, working the jog stick controls of the powerful diesel electric bow thruster he moves the ship aft until Jaap Sr's crossed arms signals, "All stop". The boat's 2,000 hp Cummins QSK60 main engine has been showing 650 rpm idle on the digital read out.

Unannounced Spill Drills Exceed Expectations

Four oil-handling facilities in Washington had unannounced spill drills sprung on them last week by the state Department of Ecology and all four passed. The four facilities that participated in the simultaneous drills were the BP Cherry Point Refinery in Ferndale, Shore Terminal in Tacoma, Tesoro Terminal in Port Angeles and ConocoPhillips-Yellowstone Pipeline in Spokane. Beginning around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, staff from Ecology, the U.S. Coast Guard and the federal Environmental Protection Agency arrived at the facilities and presented scenarios that called for the companies to notify appropriate officials, organize a command center, and assess what type of spill response was needed to protect the public, the environment and workers.
