NASSCO Holds Keel-Laying Ceremony For First T-AKE

NASSCO Starts Construction on Second T-AKE Ship

NASSCO, U.S. Shipping Partners Finalize Contract

General Dynamics NASSCO has finalized a $1b contract with U.S. Shipping Partners L.P. (USS) to build nine product carrier tankers. The contract includes options for five additional ships. Construction of the first tanker is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2007, with delivery to occur by the second quarter of 2009. The product carrier tankers or “PCs” will be 183 m in length and 32.2 m in beam, with a design draft of 11.8 m. The ships are to be double hulled, weighing 49,000 dead weight tons (DWT) and will have a cargo capacity of 331,000 barrels. USS operates a fleet of 10 deep sea vessels that carry refined petroleum and chemical products among customer facilities along the U.S. coast and has 5 double-hulled, articulated tug barges on order or under construction.

NASSCO, Daewoo Team to Build Jones Act Ships

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), and Daewoo Ship Engineering Company (DSEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) based in Busan, Korea, announced a formal teaming agreement to build ships for the U.S. market under the Jones Act. The Jones Act, among its many provisions, requires ships that carry cargo between U.S. ports to be built in the United States. Under the agreement, DSEC will provide the detail designs, support services and some of the material necessary for ship production. NASSCO will also procure material and will provide the labor and facilities to construct the ships here.

NASSCO Delivers First of ORCA Class

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, (NASSCO) has delivered the M. V. Midnight Sun to Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE). The Midnight Sun is the first commercial dry cargo vessel to be built in the United States in 10 years and the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Washington, to Anchorage, Alaska. The M. V. Midnight Sun and its sister ship, the M. V. North Star, are 840 x 118-ft. (256 x 35.9-m) RoRo cargo ships capable of carrying highway trailers as large as 53 ft. Cargo decks are 360,000 sq. ft. and able to carry up to 600 cargo trailers and 220 autos as well as oversized freight.
