Daina Shipping fined $300,000 in NZ Court for discharge of harmful substances following grounding of the ship Oct. 2011. “The guilty plea by the owners has led to this case being resolved in a timely fashion and that is to be welcomed,” MNZ Director Keith Manch said. “The completion of this prosecution marks another step in the response to the grounding of the Rena. Braemar Operations Manager Mike Richards says the milestone was reached this week after the positive identification of more container parts hauled up from the seabed at the wreck site. Mr Richards says the work of identifying containers from numbers on scrap recovered has been a huge behind-the-scenes task in its own right…

Underwater Salvage Work on 'Rena' Starts Soon

A specialist team of divers from the United States, plus the RMG 280 crane barge due to arrive shortly, reports the wreck salvors. •    The total combined weight of steel removed is now approximately 430 tonnes, which is more than 20 per cent of the total weight to be removed. •    The RMG 280 crane barge is expected to arrive in port this evening (Friday, 14 September). •    With the arrival of the barge and a specialised team of divers from the United States, underwater salvage operations are expected to commence next week. •    The crane barge – which will operate from deeper water at the aft end of the bow section - can raise significantly larger pieces of steel (up to 40 tonnes) than the helicopters. •    The above water and underwater operations will run simultaneously.

Salvage Update on Rena Wreck Removal

Salvors, Resolve Salvage & Fire report a highly productive past week. The past seven days has been highly productive for Resolve Salvage & Fire - wreck reduction has progressed through the removal of 85 individual pieces of steel, with the total steel weight removed now 300 tonnes. The reduction has mainly occurred in the forecastle deck area. Joseph Farrell III, Resolve’s Naval Architect who manages all day-to-day operations on board the Rena, says “progress is particularly encouraging considering the challenging weather that has prevented work for one and a half full days over the past week”. Maritime New Zealand officials have visited the wreck to see how work is progressing and review safety arrangements.

Rough Weather on Tauranga Reef Halts 'Rena' Salvage

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) liases with US salvors Resolve, meanwhile Braemar continues clean up work. With sea conditions remaining too rough for marine operations, Braemar Howells clean up teams have been hard at work tackling the fresh debris swept ashore on the Coromandel Peninsula in particular. Braemar Operations Manager Neil Lloyd says it has been the most prolonged  weather event encountered since the project began. The stormy conditions have had a “significant impact” on the Coromandel and Matakana Island. The rough seas have forced a halt to work on pre-rigging submerged containers lying on the seabed around the Rena wreck site.

Braemar Howells Perform 'Rena' Cargo Recycling Coup

The Braemar recovery team recovered 167 tonnes of butterfat from the wrecked containership 'Rena' –  now  repackaged for recycling into biodiesel fuel. Braemar Operations Manager Neil Lloyd says that over the course of the project, some large quantities of cargo have been recycled. "Without the efforts of our team, including distressed cargo, port and waste specialists, and our local environmental partner, this would have been dumped into a landfill site. Neil Lloyd says that re-packaging the butterfat was a tricky task because the product was in bladders which had 'ballooned' out of shape when the cardboard boxes they were in disintegrated. "We designed equipment that allowed us to squeeze the semi-soft material into one metre containers holding one tonne each.

Container Ship 'Rena' Salvage Update

Braemar Howells is using increasingly sophisticated equipment in its Rena clean-up operations. The observation class Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV), used to-date in locating submerged container wreckage, has been replaced by a working class version. While the observation class equipment provided the “eyes” to confirm sightings, the replacement ROV features a manipulating arm that can hook up and move scrap wreckage. This will enable container wreckage to be collected without the use of divers.

National On Scene Commander Rob Service said it was impossible to calculate exactly how much oil leaked during the recent heavy weather event, however, it was only a very small amount. While some of this oil appears to have reached the shoreline, it is unlikely to have a significant impact. The oil spill response team will closely monitor the situation over the weekend and remains ready to mount whatever response is necessary. A full team of 16 Svitzer salvors are on board Rena, examining the damage resulting from the recent heavy weather event.

The Smit Borneo has returned to the Rena wreck site and currently has 6 anchors secured in position. Svitzer advise the tugs, Singapore, Go Canopus and Koraki are assisting. Two connections to the Rena are still to be made, and will hopefully be completed soon, subject to sea/swell conditions at the site. The forecast is for swells to remain at 1.1m, with a total expected wave height of 2.5m, with winds from the north, turning to SE on Wednesday. Christmas celebrations were put on the backburner as staff from incident response specialists Braemar Howells worked round the clock to prevent a potential environmental disaster off the UK coast at Falmouth, Cornwall. The bulk carrier Newcastle carrying Ferrous Sulphate en‐route from Spain, destined for a chemical company in Grimsby, got into difficulty in the Bay of Biscay when its cargo became contaminated with seawater and shifted, causing the vessel to take on a dangerous starboard list.

Braemer Shipping Interim Management Statement

“Shipping markets have experienced a significant correction over the past four months and in varying degrees dry and wet freight rates and vessel values are sharply lower, mainly in response to the slowing global economic demand and the significant contraction in the availability of bank lending. However, within our Shipbroking division chartering has remained active and to date there have been no significant cancellations within our forward order book. Our Technical Services businesses have maintained the high activity levels experienced in the first half and the Logistics and Environmental businesses are continuing to perform steadily. The Board is confident about the out-turn for the current financial year.
