The future USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is underway for its first set of sea trials, known as Builder's Sea Trials (BST). Builder's sea trials provide an opportunity to test systems, components and compartments at sea for the first time. The U.S. Navy christened the future USS Detroit (LCS 7), the fourth Littoral Combat Ship of the Freedom variant, in a ceremony at Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, Oct. 18. The Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Ray Mabus, delivered the principal address at the ceremony, and Barbara Levin served as the ship's sponsor. As ship sponsor, Levin is considered a permanent member of the ship's crew and is expected to advocate for the well-being of both ship and crew. Levin, wife of U.S. Senator Carl Levin from Michigan, has been a longtime supporter of military families.

Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Aircraft Carriers recently held a change of command ceremony for Capt. Michael Schwartz, who was relieved of his duties as CVN 21 program manager. In the same ceremony Capt. Brian Antonio assumed command as CVN 21 program manager. In a ceremony held after the change of command, Schwartz retired marking an end to his 26 years of service in the Navy. In August 2000, Schwartz reported to PEO Aircraft Carriers, as assistant program manager for Aircraft Carrier Refueling Complex Overhauls, and in June 2003 he was selected as program manager, CVN 21 Future Aircraft Carriers Program. Antonio indicated that he was proud to take the helm and acknowledged the importance of the program as it transitions from largely a design effort to a production effort.
