Salerno Appointed to NAMEPA BoD

Recently Retired USCG VADM Brian Salerno joins NAMEPA Board of Directors; Salerno’s Marine Safety History a Plus for the Association’s Future. The North American Marine Environment Protection Association Founding Chairman, Clay Maitland, announced that United States Coast Guard Vice Admiral Brian Salerno (Ret.) will join its Board effective immediately. VADM Salerno recently retired from the Coast Guard where he was Deputy Commandant for Operations. “NAMEPA is thrilled that VADM Salerno is joining our efforts to ‘Save our Seas’” enthused Maitland.

Coast Guard Publishes NPRM

The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday publication in the Federal Register of a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) designed to improve safety on towing vessels. The NPRM provides a layered approach to towing vessel safety that includes the option of an audited safety management system or an annual Coast Guard inspection regime. The NPRM also includes procedures for obtaining Certificates of Inspection issued by the Coast Guard, and for Coast Guard oversight of any audit and survey processes involving third party organizations. Additionally, it would establish safety regulations governing the inspection, standards, and safety management systems for towing vessels.

DHS Secretary Visits Coast Guard

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Coast Guard Headquarters, on Jan. 22, to receive briefings from the service's senior leaders and to tour the Coast Guard's National Command Center. The Coast Guard was the first component agency of the department Napolitano visited following her swearing-in Wednesday as the department's third secretary. Napolitano was greeted by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad. W. Allen and honors were rendered by the Coast Guard's Ceremonial Honor Guard.

World Maritime Day Parallel Celebrations Held in Greece

The fourth "Parallel Event" to celebrate World Maritime Day formally and officially outside of the International Maritime Organization's London base was held in Greece on 19 and 20 September, hosted by the Government of the Hellenic Republic. On 19 September, Athens was the location for a seminar and panel discussion on the theme of IMO: 60 years in the service of shipping, in which leading figures from the maritime community took the opportunity to outline, from their perspective, their views on the past, present and future of IMO and the shipping industry. On 20 September, the International Memorial to the Wife of the Seafarer was unveiled in the town of Galaxidi, by the Secretary-General of IMO, Mr. Efthimios E.

Hearing – Securing LNG Tankers to Protect the Homeland

The House Homeland Security Committee conducted a hearing entitled Securing LNG Tankers to Protect the Homeland. Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) stated that he was concerned about the significant increase in LNG imports and the increased safety and security risks related thereto. Mr. Jim Wells, Government Accountability Office (GAO), testified that the public safety consequences of a liquefied natural gas spill need clarification. Rear Admiral Brian M. Salerno, USCG explained the Coast Guard’s role in LNG security. Mr. H.
