MARAD Awards $20 Million in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) on Monday awarded $19.6 million in grants aiming to help 31 shipyards modernize, increase productivity, and expand local employment opportunities while competing in the global marketplace.The grants were awarded to shipbuilding and repair yards in 15 states throughout the U.S. as part of MARAD's Small Shipyard Grant Program. Since 2008, the program has awarded $262.5 million to nearly 300 shipyards in 32 states and territories.

Keppel FELS Delivers Jackup Rig

Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS) has delivered Paradise 400, a high-specification KFELS B Class jackup rig to Safin Gulf FZCO (Safin) ahead of schedule and with a strong safety record. The rig is a refurbishment and upgrade of a KFELS B Class jackup rig that Keppel FELS purchased in 2011. Developed by Keppel's jackup rig design arm, Offshore Technology Development, the KFELS B Class rig is able to operate in water depths of 400 ft with a drilling depth of 30,000 ft. It is equipped with a full 15,000 psi BOP system, 70-feet cantilever outreach, with upgraded mud pit storage capacity of 4,000 bbls and accommodation for up to 150 personnel. MARAD $14.7M in Grants for Small Shipyards

On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator. 70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants

The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. Marine Tech Summit Set for Singapore

Challenges for the next decade in port and maritime research and development (R&D) and technology will be the focus of the 2nd International Conference on Port and Maritime R&D and Technology (ICPMRDT), to be held from 10-12 September 2003 at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore. Five main sessions, which would be based on the theme "Port and Maritime R&D and Technology", will be featured at the 3-day conference. They are Port Development, Management and Operations; Coastal/Hydraulics Engineering; Marine Environment; Innovative Ship Designs and Operations; and Navigation and Maritime Training. These are key areas that offer great commercial potential for the maritime R&D and technology sector.

CSBC Completes Name Change

The China Shipbuilding Corp. (CSBC) completed repainting its new name, Taiwan International Shipbuilding Corp., in Chinese on the huge Goliath crane at the CSBC Kaohsiung shipyard, a CSBC official said Tuesday. The working crew spent the whole day painting the CSBC's new Chinese name on the Goliath bridge crane, which is a hallmark of the CSBC. The repainting task was not easy as the Goliath crane is 177 meters wide and 87 meters high, and each Chinese character on it covers nine square meters, which is the equivalent of approximately three stories in height. The official said that the CSBC's name-change plan has been approved by its board directors, and is awaiting final approval by CSBC general investors March 1.

Atlantic Marine-Mobile Completes Variety of Cruise Ship Jobs

Atlantic Marine-Mobile was granted myriad of cruise ship refurbishment contracts throughout 2001, beginning with Holland America’s Maasdam, which spent approximately 14 days last January at the Alabama yard’s drydock. During this period, the vessel underwent steel prefabrication and installation of a new 2,400 sq. ft. teen room, which was put in place via the yard’s 275-ton bridge crane Goliath. The yard also completed a major cruise ship conversion to a Zenon system on Holland America’s Zaandam in order to achieve the highest level of environmental compliance. The vessel, which is the second Holland America ship to undergo voluntary installation of a Zenon system…
