Vestdavit Develops Innovative Davit for Esvagt SOV Newbuild

Vestdavit has developed an innovative heavy-duty davit for larger offshore wind workboats to be delivered for a green-fueled service operation vessel (SOV) newbuild as part of a multiple davit contract with Esvagt.Danish shipowner Esvagt earlier this year announced an order at Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard for an SOV to operate on green fuels under a joint newbuild project with compatriot offshore wind operator Ørsted.Powered by batteries and dual-fuel engines, the 93-meter-long vessel will be capable of sailing on renewable e-methanol produced from wind energy and biogenic carbon…

DNV Issues Guidance on Passenger Vessel Blackouts

A newly published guidance paper from DNV seeks to support the prevention and mitigation of blackouts impacting passenger vessels.With blackout incidents on cruise ships on the rise, DNV has created a new guidance titled ‘Managing the risk of blackouts’ which addresses the main causes and associated risks, while offering recommendations and best practices on how to avoid them and reduce the likelihood of their occurrence.In 2019 there were 12 reported power-loss events on cruise ships that resulted in full or partial blackout while in transit or maneuvering – up from four events in 2018.

A newly launched autonomous vessel project aims to improve and assess the safety and efficiency of autonomous navigation systems and deploy a pilot on an operational ferry.Partners DNV, Kongsberg Maritime, Kongsberg Seatex, Bastø Fosen and NTNU announced the launch of the new SAFE Maritime Autonomous Technology (SAFEMATE) project, at the Nor-Shipping trade fair on Tuesday.The promise of automating more functions in shipping shows great potential, and interest continues to grow throughout the industry as more projects are developed.

BV Performs Remote Survey for Harbor Tug in Singapore

Bureau Veritas Marine Singapore (BV), in collaboration with PSA Marine,  completed a remote marine survey for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual fuel harbor tug, PSA Aspen. Classification society DNV GL launched a new guidance on vessel recycling to help shipowners navigate a regulatory environment that is becoming increasingly complex.With the IMO Hong Kong Convention not yet in force, strict enforcement of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR) and the EU Waste Shipment Regulation (EU WSR) means shipowners must carefully plan for the end of life of their vessels amid a much stricter and more complex set of international, regional and national requirements than in the past.

DNV GL Invests in Public Blockchain Service Provider VeChain

DNV GL, the risk management and quality assurance company, has bought a stake in leading public blockchain service provider VeChain as it looks to use the technology to develop new digital assurance solutions. The acquisition builds on the strong relationship between the two firms and follows the recent launch of My Story, a blockchain enabled digital assurance product which gives a new level of insight into supplier and product information. DNV GL took the step to buy the minority stake as it recognises the growth potential in both the VeChain and the technology it is advancing. China, Philippines to Draft Protocol to Avoid Maritime 'Miscalculations'

China and the Philippines will negotiate a military protocol to avoid maritime “miscalculations”, Manila’s defence minister said on Wednesday, following a brief standoff near a Philippine-occupied island in a disputed part of the South China Sea. Delfin Lorenzana said the Philippines tried to put up makeshift structures on a sand bar about 4 km (2.5 miles) off Thitu island in the Spratly archipelago in August, but China objected and sent ships to the area. President Rodrigo Duterte sought to defuse tensions by ordering troops to pull out. Construction was stopped. “We intend to sit down with China to draft and agree on a protocol to resolve immediately any incident,” he said, adding he hoped talks could start this year.

Makin Island Concludes Hong Kong Visit

The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) departed Hong Kong April 11, following a scheduled port visit. The four-day visit allowed nearly 2,500 Sailors and Marines assigned to the ship and embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit the opportunity to experience Hong Kong's culture and engage with the community. The ship hosted a reception for distinguished guests April 10, to recognize the prosperous partnership between the United States and the People's Republic of China and Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong. Distinguished visitors included Consul General of the United States to Hong Kong and Macau Kurt W. Tong and Senior Captain Fang Yuxin, deputy chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison.

IBIA Develops Bunkering Procedure Guidelines

A set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for surveyors has been developed by the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) to help the industry manage new regulations, standardize best practice and build trust in the market, IBIA announced. IBIA said the guidelines have been developed in response to the introduction of the Singapore Mass Flow Meter (MFM) Technical Reference or TR 48:2015 launched on February 16, 2016, in support of the mandatory use of MFM systems for all marine fuel oil (MFO) deliveries in Singapore with effect from January 1, 2017. China's Navy Enters Strait of Hormuz

Bandar Abbas, home of Iran's navy and the main port in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, is currently hosting two Chinese naval vessels on a five-day goodwill visit, underlining the increasingly warm relationship between the two countries. It is the first such port call to Iran by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and highlights the efforts both China and Iran are making to counterbalance the power of the United States in the Middle East and along the sea lanes connecting the oil fields of the Gulf with major energy-consuming centres in Asia. The firepower of the guided missile destroyer Changchun and guided missile frigate Changzhou of the PLAN's 17th escort taskforce is dwarfed by the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquartered in Bahrain.

New Book Examines DNV's 150-year History

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) began in 1864 as a small Norwegian classification society, and in the 150 years since, has grown into one of the world’s largest enterprises of its kind with the formation of DNV GL in 2013. As part of the group’s anniversary celebration, DNV GL launched a book entitled “Building Trust: the History of DNV 1864-2014,” telling the tale of the organization’s development throughout its 150-year history, drawing attention to the group’s sociological contributions through the years.

Todd Busch: SVP and General Manager, Technical Services at Crowley Maritime Corporation. Todd Busch joined Crowley as an ordinary seaman in 1986, earning his masters’ license working aboard company tugboats before coming ashore in 1994 as a tug dispatcher. Since then, he has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility within the firm. Today, the 24-year Crowley veteran is a member of the company’s senior leadership team, reporting directly to Crowley CEO Tom Crowley. Based at Crowley’s headquarters in Jacksonville, FL, he is responsible for several of the company’s business enterprises including the project management organization PMOrg (known as Crowley solutions), as well as subsidiaries Titan Salvage, Jensen Maritime Consultants, and Intrepid Ship Management.

Andrew Altendorf is the CEO and majority owner of Acme Environmental Inc. Acme’s history spans almost 50 years and the firm is recognized as a pioneer in the manufacture of oil spill containment booms and other oil spill recovery items. A U.S. Coast Guard classified OSRO, Acme and Altendorf support numerous customers in Oklahoma and the Midwest with their emergency response. He has been the President of the Spill Control Association of America since November of 2010. Prior to taking the reins as President, he served on the SCAA Board of Directors for 5 years.
