Oshima, DNV GL Sign Strategic Cooperation

Spurred by the IMO strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Oshima Shipbuilding and classification society DNV GL have signed a long-term strategic cooperation to conduct research and development together on new bulk carrier designs. The first design to result from the cooperation, the “Oshima Ultramax 2030” leading to a 50% reduction in EEDI, was launched at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.The partners aim to continue the strategic cooperation through to 2030, developing and updating a road map towards the IMO zero emissions scenario…

DNV GL, New Dayang Shipbuilding Agree on JDP

As part of the strategic cooperation agreement signed between SUMEC Marine Company Ltd. and DNV GL last year, SUMEC’s New Dayang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and DNV GL have agreed on a Joint Development Project (JDP) to update the Crown 63.5k Bulk Carrier design. The agreement was signed at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.The JDP will include the application of the new harmonized common structural rules (HCSR) to the design, as well as a focus on improving the energy efficiency of the design, particularly in the ship board machinery and electrical systems.

Bluetech Finland Signs Bulk Carrier Design Contract

Navibulgar has contracted 4+2 Bluetech 45 handymax bulk carriers from Yangzijiang.   The Bluetech 45 design is based on the successful Bluetech 42 design. The ship will have a length of 190 m, maximum draught of 10.8 m, a dwt of 45 000 tons, a large hold volume for its class and an ice class 1C.   Bluetech bulk carrier designs have the largest hold volume and deadweight and lowest fuel consumption in their class, making them the most eco-friendly on the market. The designs are marketed worldwide by Clarksons Platou Shipbroking.

ABS Initiative Improves Bulker Loading Safety

ABS has introduced a new service and analysis tool that will allow atypical cargoes on bulk carriers. The software streamlines loading analysis and provides a safer approach to loading atypical bulk cargo. “ABS understands that maintaining a leadership role means finding ways to improve safety and efficiency for industry,” says ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine Dr. Kirsi Tikka. In developing this new software and service, ABS has taken a comprehensive approach to steel coil loading. This new capability helps improve efficiency, enabling faster decisions regarding the safety of nontraditional loads. Using the ABS loading analysis software enables timely and accurate decisions about the achievable safety for steel coil loads that are not included in the loading manual.

Demand for Coastal and Transoceanic ATBs Grows

Along the way, ATBs gain speed, efficiency, safety – and popularity. Operators of articulated tugs and barges, or ATBs, say they like the maneuverability, weather reliability, stability, speed of these units, and the manner in which the tug pushes the barge. As a marine transportation concept, they can also simply be described as versatile. ATBs move petroleum, chemicals, coal, grain, containerized cargo and rail cars for customers on the U.S. coasts, rivers, the Great Lakes and overseas. As a result, demand for articulated units expanded in the last two decades with new technology.

MHI, OMT Enter Shipbuilding Collaboration

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has entered into an agreement with Odense Maritime Technology A/S (OMT) of Denmark, a provider of ship design services, on collaboration in ship engineering business. The companies said they plan to combine abundant track records in shipbuilding business to target speedy development of diverse ship types in a quest to expand their licensing business. Under the newly agreed collaborative arrangement, MHI will primarily take charge of developing propulsion performance aspects, including hull form design, model testing, and development of energy-saving devices and propellers. OMT will be responsible largely for the conceptual and basic designs based on MHI's hull form designs.

STG Ship Efficiency International Conference

China Shipyard Gets Significant HBC Bulkship Orders

Hamburg Bulk Carriers (HBC) has ordered three 43,500 dwt bulk carriers plus options for 9 more from Qingshan Shipyard. The buyerss add that two and a half years of work was invested into this project to build up to 12 bulk carriers of about 43.500 dwt of which the first delivery is expected in the last quarter of 2014. The design is a modification of a standard design developed by Deltamarin of Finland. Model tests confirmed the high expectations of extremely low consumption of fuel oil which is less than 20 mt fuel oil daily, and added to this advantage the ships will also have a very shallow draft. LNG Fuelled Bulk Carrier Design Developed

‘Clean Sky’ design Kamsarmax project moves industry far beyond the concept stage for gas powered bulk carriers. Lloyd’s Register has provided approval in principle (AIP) for the new ‘Clean Sky’ bulk carrier design incorporating an LNG-as-fuel system. COSCO, Golden Union and Lloyd’s Register started the project in June 2011 to investigate the potential to develop a commercially viable bulk carrier design based on an existing COSCO conventional design, but employing gas powered propulsion systems.

AVIC International will Acquire Deltamarin

The majority of the shares of Deltamarin Ltd are to be sold to AVIC International Investments Limited, a publicly listed company on the Singapore Stock Exchange. After the closing of the acquisition, Deltamarin’s existing operations will continue as they are and the business will remain independent keeping the name and the brand of Deltamarin unchanged. The aim of the intended new ownership structure is to enable Deltamarin’s solid growth in the marine and offshore oil and gas markets. The new owner to be, AVIC International Investments Limited, is a part of the AVIC Group. Its parent company AVIC is a global Fortune 500 company with approximately 500,000 employees.

Ocean Tug & Barge Designing AT/B Dredge Tug

Ocean Tug & Barge Engineering Corp. will design the tug portion of a new AT/B dredge to be built at Signal International, in Orange, TX, for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. The “RAPID” Class AT/B’s high speed parent form lines for both the tug and the barge were developed by OT&BE and Taisei Engineering, of Tokyo. MARIN is adapting the lines to the specific dredge requirements and engaging in the associated optimization. The design feathers near-ship speeds with ship-like horsepower and is a great advance in AT/B design. Container AT/B’s under design with the same hulls will be capable of 16+ knots at near-ship HP levels. OT&BE will also design the supporting structure in the notch area of the barge to accept the Articouple connection system that will be used to connect the tug and barge.

Bulk Carrier Design Delivers 14% Fuel Oil Reduction

Lloyd’s Register supervised the design appraisal, build and sea trials, verifying the performance of a new, modified 57,000 dwt ship based on a SDARI design. The M.V. Aquila, first in a new series of supramax bulk carrier designs, optimised to burn less fuel oil has been delivered in China on the eve of the Lunar New Year holidays. The efficiency improvements have been achieved by carrying out a number of straightforward – but effective – changes including: de-rating the main engine, a new propeller design which has been optimised for the de-rated engine, and fitting a mewis duct.

If you love the sea then this is a must read. It gives a true taste of salvage operations and the courage of those who wrest disaster from the hungry sea.

Feature: Series Design in the New Regs Environment

For a half century, GTR Campbell has offered a turnkey ship creation service, applying a unique project-oriented philosophy that turns conflict of interest into mutual interest. New regulations may have changed a design's lifespan but not the series concept. Today, Antony Prince is internationally recognized as the President of GTR Campbell Marine Consultants and successor to the legacy of the company founder, famed naval architect George Campbell. But 10 years ago, Prince was just a man with a plan and some mighty big shoes to fill. Prince had been George Campbell's close friend and associate for over 20 years. In 1990, the aging Campbell turned the company over to his protégé, cautioning that, for a consultancy, reputation was not easily transferred from one man to another.
