Ballast water equipment maker Erma First expands its portfolio and brings "the world’s smallest" ballast water treatment system to the international market through its acquisition of US firm oneTANK LLC.oneTANK, a subsidiary of Glosten, developed a small scale innovative, low-cost, IMO Revised G8 Code and United States Coast Guard compliant system. Based on a patented mixing technology developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, the system can be installed in larger vessels’ aftpeak tanks. It is also suitable for use aboard workboats, tugboats, semi-submersibles, fishing vessels and superyachts.

OSG Taps oneTank for BWT Solution for Fleet

Jones Act tanker and ATB operator Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) selected oneTank, a Seattle-based ballast water treatment system manufacturer, to provide an aftpeak ballast water treatment solution for vessels in their fleet.oneTank gained IMO BWMS Code approval in July 2020 and U.S. Coast Guard Type Approval in September 2020. Engineered as a low-cost ($65,000 per system) treatment option intended for vessels that do not need a complex solution, it is light and compact; the system has a footprint of just four square feet and requires only 15 amps of electrical power.

Hai Cheung to Build Evoqua Seacure System Under License

Evoqua Water Technologies’ SeaCure ballast water management system (BWMS) continues to build momentum in the marine market. Today, the company expanded its global partnership network by joining forces with Hai Cheung, a leading marine equipment supplier to the Chinese market. Hai Cheung will initially support Chinese shipyards with the supply and service of Evoqua’s SeaCURE BWMS. In a second phase of the agreement, the Hong Kong-based engineering company will then produce the SeaCURE system under license to facilitate demand from Chinese yards.

Mumbai Port's 2nd Liquid Chemical Berth Inaugurated

Mumbai Port Trust commissioned its second Liquid Chemical Berth at Pir Pau on January 13th 2016. The facility was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The second Chemical Berth is a modern state-of-the-art facility with four mooring dolphins, equipped with Quick Release Mooring Hooks (QRMH), two breasting dolphins having cell fenders with frontol pads for smooth berthing of chemical tankers and a service platform with a provision of seven Marine Loading Arms (MLAs) connected with 650 Mtrs long trestle having roadways and pipelines. The berth is designed to handle 55,000 DWT vessels carrying liquid bulk chemicals and POL products, which can be upgraded to 65,000 DWT in future. The total project cost about $ 20 million.

The history of marine safety is soaked in water and written in blood. “I think that most people will tell you that changes in marine safety are almost exclusively disaster-driven,” agrees Dr. Josh Smith, a professor at Kings Point and interim director of the American Merchant Marine Museum. It hasn’t always been that way. Actually, it’s been worse. Despite some efforts early on to exert some control over shipping practices, going to sea has been accepted as a risky undertaking as long as man has floated vessels.

Nanjing Tanker To Be Delisted, First By Central Gov't Backed Firm

Loss-making shipping company Nanjing Tanker Corp will be delisted from the Shanghai Stock Exchange after a five-day grace period, marking the first time for a company backed by the central government to be dropped from a domestic exchange. The delisting comes after the government allowed China's first-ever public bond default in March and underscores the difficulties facing domestic companies saddled with record debt in a slowing economy. The delisting had been widely anticipated after the company said in January it was poised to post its fourth straight year of loss, breaching exchange rules. A statement carried on the Shanghai exchange's official microblog on Friday said Nanjing Tanker will be delisted after booking losses from 2010 to 2013.

Contract Makes First Commercial ME-LGI Engine Reality

Vancouver-based Waterfront Shipping has confirmed its Methanol Carrier Project for a series of 50,000-dwt methanol carriers, each powered by an MAN B&W ME-LGI main engine running on methanol. The confirmation stems from a Letter of Intent MAN Diesel & Turbo and Waterfront signed in July of this year. MAN Diesel & Turbo officially designates the ME-LGI engine as ME-B9.3-LGI. In collaboration with leading shipping lines, Waterfront reports that it is behind the 2+1 × 6G50ME-LGI engines ordered by Westfal-Larsen, the 2+1 × 7S50ME-B9.3-LGI by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and the 1+1+1 × 6G50ME-LGI with Marinvest/Skagerack Invest. Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd.

Port of Rotterdam Reports Increase

This year, 328 million (metric) tons of cargo was handled in the port of Rotterdam, an increase of almost 2% compared to 2002. The former record year 2000 was beaten with 6 million tons (mt). The provisional figures of the largest port of the world were presented by its CEO, Willem Scholten. "There are record for the total, chemicals, ro/ro and containers. In containers Rotterdam broke through the barrier of 7 million TEU as first port outside Asia. Investments by the companies are staying on a high level. The extension of the port, creation of the Second Maasvlakte, came much closer. The increase of throughput is attributable to the handling of agricultural bulk (+10.7%)…

UK P&I: Promoting Best Practice

As the most frequent and costly large claims dealt with by the UK P&I Club concern cargo, managers Thomas Miller are constantly concerned about the procedures and practices which give rise to them. Cargo claims over $100,000 comprise about 40 per cent of the Club total and 27 per cent of all settlement costs, spread across a wide spectrum of commercial shipping activity. Containers, dry bulk, steel products and bagged bulk each account for 11 to 13 per cent of claims with reefer-bulk, general, bulk chemicals and oil products each exceeding five per cent. Equipment, mechanical and structural failure together are far outstripped by human error as the sole or major cause of incidents giving rise to claims. Human error costs the Club around $21 million a year in large cargo claims alone.

Aker to Build Four for Stolt-Nielsen

Aker Yards ASA was awarded a $350m contract to build four ships for the Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group BV of Rotterdam. Europe's largest shipbuilder said the ships will be specially designed parcel tankers, with stainless steel cargo tanks, for delivery in late 2008 and early 2009. Parcel tankers can carry bulk chemicals, edible oils, acids and other specialty liquids. The new ships will be 599.5 x 105.5 ft. wide and with a deadweight of 43,000 tons, Aker Yards said in a statement. The company said construction will be split between its Floroe yard in western Norway and its Damen Shipyards Okean in the Ukraine. The fore and after sections will be built in the Ukraine, and the middle sections Norway, where the ships will be completed.

Port of Rotterdam Records Strong Growth

Throughput figures for the port of Rotterdam continue to show strong growth. In the first 9 months of this year, 277 million tonnes of cargo were handled, 4% more than in the same period of 2004. Growth is above the prognosis for this year as well as the expectations for the longer term, of 2–3 %. Container handling is doing even better with +14%. In weight, container handling went up from 61 million tonnes in 2004 to 68 million tonnes (+12%).Expressed in TEU (container units of 20 foot), this equals 6.9 million, a plus of 14% or 800,000 TEU. The relative large difference between TEU’s and tonnes, indicates that the number of empties rose with over twenty percent.

Port of Rotterdam Throughput is Up

In the first six months of 2001, throughput in the port of Rotterdam increased to 161.8 million tons, 2.3% more than in the first half of 2000. The transshipment of coal (+26%), petrochemical products and petcokes(+%), crude oil (+7.5%) and agribulk (+16%) in particular contributed to the good result. Other liquid bulk (chemicals, oil and fats, -2%), other dry bulk (including sand, phosphates, minerals, -%), ores and scrap (-10.2%) and the three general cargo groups (roll on/roll off, containers and other general cargo) showed a decrease. Total incoming trade increased by 5%, while outgoing trade was down 6%. During the first six months, growth gradually slackened off again.

Throughput At Port Of Rotterdam Falls 3.5%, But Conditions Are Improving

At 303.9 million tons, cargo throughput in the port of Rotterdam in 1999 fell by 3.5 percent. This decrease is less than the 3.7 percent in the first half-year, but is a downturn compared with the top year of 1998 when 314.8 million tons were handled. The volumes of container cargo, grain and animal feed, scrap metal, and other liquid bulk cargo increased considerably this year. However, this did not compensate for the decrease in imports of ore, or the throughput of crude oil and coal. The tonnage of other general cargo (pallets, bags, boxes, big bags) also underwent a further decline, with the exception of fruit and vegetables. The Mayor of Rotterdam…
