First Ship Sails after Latest Mississippi River Channel Deepening

US Great Lakes Ports See Mixed Impacts from COVID-19

U.S. Great Lakes ports reported mixed results in June with aluminum, road salt and grain shipments holding strong despite the coronavirus pandemic, while shipments of commodities related to steel production and manufacturing have continued to slide.Additionally, the St. Lawrence Seaway reported that from April 1 to June 30, nearly 11.7 million metric tons of cargo was shipped via the bi-national trade corridor. While these volumes were down 8% compared to the same time period in 2019, cargo shipments improved in June narrowing the year-over-year decline.Craig H.

South African Ports Remain Open Despite Lockdown

South Africa's ports remain open to all types of cargo despite a nationwide 21-day lockdown though essential goods should be prioritized, the Department of Transport said in a notice."(The) government has now decided that in the interest of ensuring a functional supply chain across all ports, that all cargoes will be accepted for loading and off-loading," said the notice, which was dated March 31.That reversed instructions sent by port authorities to bulk terminals last week saying

More Bad News for Bulkers, as South African Ports Close for Mineral Exports

South Africa's main export terminals will be closed to mineral exports from midnight on Thursday when a nationwide 21-day lockdown over coronavirus begins, disrupting copper supply chains linking major producer Zambia to Asian consumers.Miners in the Zambian copper belt typically transport copper overland to South Africa's ports, where it is exported mainly to China, the world's biggest consumer of the metal."All bulk terminals (mineral mining commodities) will be closed," a note from Transnet Port Terminals read, according to a shipping agent.

Jan De Nul Completes Liepaja Port Dredging

Luxembourg-headquartered dredging and construction engineering company Jan De Nul Group completed the capital dredging works for the improvement of Liepaja Port in Latvia ahead of schedule.In order to allow larger vessels to enter and leave the port of Liepaja fully loaded, the access channel to the port needed to be adapted. As part of the Liepaja Port Water Infrastructure Works, Jan De Nul Group was awarded the dredging works.The scope for Jan De Nul Group entailed the removal of 2.7 million m³ of sediments to deepen the port access channel from 12.5 m to 14.5 m, and to create a new navigation channel of -14 m towards one of the main bulk terminals within the port area.Jan De Nul Group faced challenging weather and soil conditions during the execution of the project.

Fumigation Doesn't Work for Some Ship Cargoes

The fumigation of grain cargoes using certain pesticides, namely plant protection products, may not be effective in controlling insect larvae, resulting in cargo damage or loss.Javier Quintero Saavedra, head of HSE at Terminales Marítimos de Galicia (TMGA), an operator of bulk terminals in Galicia, Spain, and Chairman, Dry Bulk Cargoes Working Group, ICHCA,  said: “We are finding that the pupae and larvae inside maize kernels in various consignments, and which were subjected to in-transit fumigation

SMS Towage Orders Tug Duo from Damen

UK towage company SMS Towage has purchased two tugs from Damen Shipyards. The first vessel, called Manxman, was handed over on April 12, just seven days after contract signing. The contract for the second vessel, to be called Marksman, was signed on May 1 with a delivery date scheduled for June 7th. Both vessels are Damen ASD Tugs 2411, and mark the first Damen tugs for SMS Towage.Established in 2002, SMS Towage started towage activities on and around the Humber Estuary on the UK’s east coast.

Shanghai International Port Group Buys Kalmar Equipment

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has secured an order to supply 15 units of container handling equipment to Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).This order, including a total of 4 units of Reachstackers and 11 units of Empty Container Handlers, has been booked into the Cargotec 2018 second quarter order intake. Delivery of the machines is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2018.Founded in 2005, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. is the largest joint-stock port operator in China. In 2017, the total cargo throughput volume for SIPG reached 700 million tons and the container throughput also exceeded 40 million TEU, making it as the largest container port in the world.SIPG operates all the public container and bulk terminals in port of Shanghai

Konecranes Gottwald Model 2 Mobile Harbor Crane Delivered in Italy

Konecranes recently commissioned the mobile harbor crane in in the new terminal of SIR in Brindisi, Italy, where it will handle coal destined for power generation in continuous-duty operation. SIR srl (SIR), a leading provider of industry-related environmental services, purchased in May 2018 the eco-efficient diesel-electric crane to be the backbone of its new port business. Antonio Roma, Managing Director and owner, SIR, explains, “We won a tender to provide a coal-fired power plant in Brindisi with imported coal and have taken the opportunity to launch our own handling activity in the Port of Brindisi. The Model 2 crane will play a key role in the supply chain from bulk vessels to the power station, as it will ensure productive and reliable handling of inbound coal in the long term.

Share Holders Okay Macquarie, Goldman Sachs to Acquire HES International

Riverstone Holdings and The Carlyle Group jointly announce that  they intend to sell HES International to a consortium of Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) & Goldman Sachs. Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 5, which is managed by MIRA, and West Street Infrastructure Partners III (WSIP), which is managed by the Merchant Banking Division of Goldman Sachs, have reached an agreement in principle with Riverstone Holdings and The Carlyle Group to acquire HES International. Capital for the original investment by Riverstone and Carlyle came from two funds: (i) Riverstone/Carlyle Global Energy & Power Fund IV, L.P. and (ii) Carlyle International Energy Partners, L.P. (CIEP). HES will now initiate consultations where appropriate with the relevant works councils.

Macquarie, Goldman Sachs to Buy HES International

Infrastructure funds managed by Macquarie and Goldman Sachs have agreed to buy Dutch port terminals operator HES International from owners Riverstone and The Carlyle Group, they said on Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed. Reuters reported in February that Macquarie and Goldman funds were poised to buy HES for around 2 billion euros ($2.45 billion). HES is one of the largest diversified port terminals businesses in Europe with 18 dry and liquid bulk terminals.   Reporting by Toby Sterling

BIMCO Lists Three Best Performing Bulk Terminals

The three best performing dry bulk terminals in the world are Santander and Bilbao in Spain and Quebec in Canada, according to BIMCO’s 2017 Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report. Santander was rated first in all four major categories: terminal handling of loading/unloading; terminal mooring and berthing arrangements; information exchange between the ship and the terminal and terminal equipment. The report evaluates terminal and port performance from around the world to improve safety standards and the turnaround time of ships calling ports. The results provide an insight into what it takes to be a “good bulk terminal”, but BIMCO still needs more reports from members to establish better ratings and statistics

Washington State Sued for Blocking Coal Exports to Asia

A company that planned to build a coal export terminal in the Pacific Northwest to ship western U.S. coal to Asian markets sued the state of Washington on Wednesday for blocking construction last year. Lighthouse Resources Inc filed a lawsuit in federal court against Washington Governor Jay Inslee and two state regulators for allegedly violating the U.S. Constitution's commerce clause by denying permits to allow the company to ship coal mined in Wyoming, Montana and other western states through its proposed Millennium Bulk Terminal to clients in Japan and South Korea.

Contanda Secures Prime Waterfront Acreage on the Houston Ship Channel

Contanda Terminals LLC,  a  provider of bulk liquid storage and logistics services in North America, has announced a multi-year commercial agreement with the Port of Houston Authority for 339 acres of prime deep-water access property located on the Houston Ship Channel. The land acquisition enables Contanda to continue to develop its key strategic business objective of doubling its terminal storage capability over the next five years, and expanding into the bulk petrochemical and hydrocarbon markets. This will further strengthen the company’s presence along the U.S. Gulf Coast where project investments have surged since 2014 and Contanda already operates three other bulk terminals.

Global Bulk Terminals Market to Grow 5.1%

Global Bulk Terminals market is expected to grow from $5.20 billion in 2016 to reach $7.41 billion by 2023 with a CAGR of 5.1%, said Forecast Research Study. Rising demand from industrial output, increasing usage of bulk commodities and its affordability in emerging countries are some of the factors fuelling the market. In addition downfall of coal consumption and business reforms in some countries are hindering the market growth. Based on type, dry bulk segment has acquired the largest market share and growth of this segment is attributed to developing countries and their cleaner energy utilizing approach and thus restricting the coal consumption.

BIMCO Launches First Report On Global Dry Bulk Terminal Performance

Since 2015 BIMCO has been collecting feedback on the performance of port terminals in order to be able to report the results to members and, ultimately, to give further guidance to ships. BIMCO has received over 400 feedback reports from bulk carriers on the performance of dry bulk terminals around the world. The data has been collected, evaluated and presented in this first annual report. The map shows that 74 countries had terminals, which were included in the vetting scheme. Aron F. Sørensen, Head of Maritime Technology and Regulation at BIMCO explains: The dry bulk vetting scheme makes it possible for companies to compare terminal performances by using actual experiences provided by the crew of the bulk carrier.

The Association of Bulk Terminal Operators has warned that cargo liquefaction – an issue commonly associated with the seaborne transportation of unprocessed mineral ores and concentrates – is also an issue which bulk terminals need to pay attention to. Speaking at the ICHCA ISP76 panel meeting in London last week, ABTO chief executive Ian Adams, said: “The liquefaction of bulk commodities is a serious issue which can and should be managed effectively shoreside. However, allowing ship’s crews access to stock piles to assess solid bulk commodities such as Bauxite and nickel ore is not the answer in view of the fact that stock piles have been known to collapse.

Breakbulk and Bulk Cargo Terminal at Port of Prince Rupert?

The Port of Prince Rupert today announced it has signed a feasibility assessment agreement with SSA Marine and its wholly-owned subsidiary Western Stevedoring to explore the viability of a breakbulk and bulk import/export terminal located on Kaien Island at the Port of Prince Rupert. “Ongoing cargo diversification is one of the highest priorities for the Port of Prince Rupert, and the potential for the return of breakbulk and general cargoes capacity to the Port of Prince Rupert represents a clear response to growing market demand in Western Canada,” said Don Krusel, President & CEO of the Port of Prince Rupert. The terminal project has been part of the Port’s Gateway 2020 development planning and is integrated with the Ridley Island Road, Rail and Utility Corridor.

The newly established Association of Bulk Terminal Operators (ABTO) has been formed to provide the world’s bulk terminals with a united front at governmental level to ensure the sector can better face the environmental and commercial challenges ahead. Four Terex Gottwald Cranes for IRC Haldia Port

Düsseldorf, Germany, 14 June 2016 – Terex Port Solutions (TPS) is continuing its success in India with its diesel-electric Terex Gottwald mobile harbour cranes. IRC Natural Resources Pvt. Ltd., which is part of the IRC Group (IRC), has ordered two Model 4 mobile harbour cranes in the G HMK 4406 B 4-rope grab variant for its contract at Berth No. 13, Haldia Dock Complex, located to the south of Kolkata on the Ganges estuary. In August 2016, the cranes will be transported, completely erected, by heavy-load vessel to India, where they will handle coal, coke, manganese ore and limestone from October onwards. The two identical machines have a 40-t grab curve and a maximum lifting capacity of 100 t.
