Poor Communication Led to Barge Striking Bridge -NTSB

Poor communication led to a tow striking a railway swing bridge near Slidell, La., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in Marine Investigation Report released Thursday.On January 12, 2021, an empty hopper barge being pushed by the Robert Cenac struck the CSX Rigolets railway swing bridge while it was opening. The bridge sustained damage estimated at $1.1 million and the barge sustained minor damage estimated at $5,000. No injuries or pollution were reported.The pilot of the Robert Cenac called the bridge operator around 10:31 p.m. CST to request the bridge to be opened.

Crew Health: Addressing Seafarer Obesity

Sophia Bullard, Crew Health Program Director at UK P&I Club, comments on the fact many crewmembers fail pre-sea medical examinations due to a combination of serious illnesses linked to obesity. It could be argued that obesity alone is a precursor to other more serious conditions if nothing is done to reduce body mass index (BMI) and improve lifestyle. A BMI of 25 or above can signify a serious weight problem. Poor eating habits and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle can also contribute to the development of many lifestyle diseases.

US Import Prices Fall, but Downward Trend Nearing End

U.S. import prices fell in February for an eighth straight month, weighed down by declining costs for petroleum and a range of other goods, but the pace of decline is slowing as the dollar's rally fades and oil prices stabilize. The Labor Department said on Friday import prices slipped 0.3 percent last month after a 1.0 percent decrease in January. Import prices have decreased in 18 of the last 20 months, reflecting a robust dollar and plunging oil prices. They were down 6.1 percent in the 12 months through February, the smallest year-on-year drop since December 2014.

$5.6M Granted for US Fisheries Research

Research projects in New England and the Mid-Atlantic are expected to receive nearly $5.6 million in federal funding, according to an announcement made today by NOAA Fisheries. Under the Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program, which is administered by NOAA Fisheries, funding will be made available to provide financial assistance for research and development projects that benefit the U.S. fishing industry. Of these funds, $2.3 million would support projects to benefit the groundfish industry. Iranian Shipyard Karoon Signs New Contract

Karoon Shipyard, as one of the Iranian private companies in shipbuilding and repair, has won its first new project in New Year. According to a report, Vice President Mahmood Rastkar declared on that, "this supply boat with length 118 ft and 40 ton bullard pull will be equipped with bow thruster and delivery time will be at the end of 2011. 1805-The cutter Louisiana engaged two pirate vessels that had been fitted out at New Orleans. USS Constitution – 200+ Yrs of Service

The crew of USS Constitution - the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world - celebrated the ship's 211th birthday and recognized the performance of her Sailors Oct. 21. CP Ships, FastShip Announce Agreement

NECC Establishes Riverine Squadron 3

Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) established Riverine Squadron (RIVRON) 3 on July 6 during a ceremony at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. RIVRON 3’s primary mission is to conduct stability operations, provide maritime security and train coalition partners in riverine operations. “This ceremony is for you,” said Cmdr. Gregory Sandway, RIVRON 3’s commanding officer. “We are making history today, and I want you to be proud of that. Navy Teams with Army for Joint Humanitarian Exercise

Several units of the recently established Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) and Naval Beach Group 2 are participating in the combined DELMAR/Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) exercise on Fort Story, Virginia Beach, Va., in June. The exercise began June 5 and combines active-duty and reserve service members from various Navy and Army commands. The exercise is organized by U.S. Army Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). During the exercise scenario, these units must work together to provide humanitarian assistance to an area simulated as devastated by a natural disaster. These same skills could be employed if a massive terrorist attack disrupts existing port facilities. "This is like a mission of presence," said Cmdr.
