With the arrival of the Iron Kestrel and Iron Corella in Port Hedland, Western Australia, the first two of BHP Billiton Iron Ore's six boat order for Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAstar 85 Class escort tugs have now been delivered by ASL Shipyards Singapore. These modern high performance tugs will escort bulk carriers in and out of Port Hedland. They were custom designed and built to meet the environmental conditions and operational requirements of the world's busiest bulk commodity port by tonnage.

Caterpillar Marine launched the MaK M 25 E engine platform at SMM, an engine platform developed for state-of-the-art vessel designs with an emphasis on fuel savings. Key product features include optimized engine performance as well as an efficient part load range, which the manufacturer boasts can help to save up to 40 tons of fuel a year when operating vessels at variable engine speeds. Vessels typically operating at lower loads can save up to 60 tons of fuel per year by changing the operating mode from constant to variable engine speed.

In the summer of this year, Signet Maritime took delivery of Signet Arcturus & Signet Polaris, the eighth and ninth tugs designed for them by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada to add to its fleet of 37 conventional and ASD vessels. The tugs were constructed at Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Florida. The tugs are based on the Signet Weatherly design, but with additional power and higher bollard pull. The vessels are intended for multidisciplinary work including offshore support, towing, ship-assist, ship escort, subsea and rig moves.

Caterpillar Marine says it is due to unveil new power ratings for the Cat C175 propulsion engine for commercial vessels at the 2014 SMM Exhibition, currently underway in Hamburg, Germany. Designed specifically as a high speed power solution for commercial applications including ocean going and harbor tugs, the C175-16 propulsion engine is now available with ratings of 2239 bkW - 2550 bkW @ 1800 rpm. The new ratings extend Caterpillar Marine’s high-speed engine power range beyond the company’s already industry-leading 3516C HD engine. Cat C175 engine platforms with the new ratings are available to order now from the global Cat dealer network.

Adding to its fleet of 37 conventional and ASD vessels, Signet Maritime Corporation took ownership of its ninth newly constructed tractor tug in six years. SIGNET ARCTURUS, a 105’ x 38’ Z-Drive, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia was delivered by Patti Marine Enterprises of Pensacola, Florida on May 25, 2014. SIGNET ARCTURUS is powered by two Caterpillar model C175-16 main engines, each rated 3417 BHP at 1800 RPM. The engines are coupled to two Rolls-Royce US 255 CP azimuth thrusters via carbon fiber shafting, providing thrust for ABS certified sustained bollard pull of 83.45 metric tonnes. All Caterpillar mains and John Deere 6068TFM76 generator engines aboard the vessel are U.S. EPA Tier 3 certified for reduced emissions. Joseph W.

Highly automated, fully variable assembly process allows Cat to provide uniform service to a myriad of marine customers. But, MCOE is only one part of Cat’s new business strategy. In August of 2007, the first Cat marine engine left Caterpillar’s new Marine Center of Excellence (MCOE) in Greenville, South Carolina. In the ensuing years, countless engines have gone through the same process. Caterpillar to feature OCEARCH ‘Shark Wranglers’, at upcoming 2012 International Workboat Show, New Orleans. Recently featured in the hit television show “Shark Wranglers” on the History Channel, OCEARCH is a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on the ocean’s giants. Much of their recent work has been dedicated to solving mysteries surrounding great white sharks. The OCEARCH team sails the globe conducting scientific expeditions onboard the MV OCEARCH, which is powered by 2x Cat® 3412 engines and 1x  C4.4 and 1x  C6.6 generator while serving as an at-sea laboratory. On the occasion of SMM 2012, Caterpillar Marine launched new diesel, dual fuel and gas engines. The C175-16 from Caterpillar is the first Cat engine with core ACERT Technology, designed and built from the ground up, according to Robert Hallengren, Marine Products Director, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems. It offers maximum performance along with EPA Marine Tier 3 and IMO Tier II emissions compliance with no after treatment, and is positioned to comply with EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier III rules.

Caterpillar introduces C175-16 U.S. This 60 Hz package — rated at 3000 to 3100 ekW for standby and mission-critical power, 2725 to 2825 ekW at prime power and 2500 to 2600 ekW at continuous power — offers fuel efficiency and lower emissions in a compact footprint. With the addition of the C175-16, Caterpillar offers the widest range of Tier 4 Interim-certified generator sets in the industry, ranging from 455 kW to 3100 kW. The 20-cylinder C175 produces the greatest power output of any single high-speed diesel generator set available on the market, producing up to 4 MW of power, requiring less maintenance and provides the highest power density of any current high-speed generator set. “The C175-20 represents a true breakthrough in generator set technology,” said Robert Koval, Investors Projects general manager of Caterpillar Electric Power Division. “Others have made promises about similar offerings, but the C175 is the largest high-speed generator on the market, period. The Signet Constellation and Signet Stars & Stripes are the latest development in Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAstar series of tugs. These two powerful new escort tugs have been delivered to their owner’s – Signet Maritime Corporation of Houston, Texas. They were constructed to provide marine support services to Angola LNG Supply Services (ALSS) in the Port of Pascagoula, Mississippi. Designated as RAstar 3100s and designed by Naval Architects Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, they were constructed by Trinity Yachts LLC, at their Gulfport, MS shipyard.

Colle Maritime Company, a joint venture between Signet Maritime Corporation and Colle Towing Company, has been awarded a twenty-year contract to provide marine support services to Angola LNG Supply Services (ALSS) in the Port of Pascagoula, Mississippi. The Signet/Colle joint venture will construct two RAstar 3100 Class Terminal Support/Escort Tugs to fulfill this important contract. The tugs, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, will each provide 80 metric tonnes of bollard pull.
