Svitzer has announced the purchase of the Dutch tugboat Mercurius, which has been renamed to Svitzer Mercurius and reflagged to the UK.The tug will be deployed in the Port of Southampton, where the tug increases the company’s fleet in Southampton to six vessels with a collective bollard pull of 415 tons.Built by Damen in 2014, the ASD 3212 tugboat has a strong bollard pull of 82 tons and a top speed of 14 knots, powered by two main and two auxiliary engines supplied by Caterpillar.

Clariant  signed a joint research agreement with ExxonMobil and Renewable Energy Group (REG) to evaluate the potential use of cellulosic sugars from sources such as agricultural waste and residues to produce biofuel, which has the potential to play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.The new partnership expands a previously announced agreement[1] for joint research between ExxonMobil and REG, in which the companies successfully validated the ability of REG Life Sciences…

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has launched the second vessel in a series of four new inland river towboats for IWL River, Inc. The newly built vessel, Impala Puerto Salgar (Hull #244), was launched on August 2, 2016. The series of CT Marine designed 134 ft. ABS Classed Inland River Service towboats are Triple Screw with a Retractable Pilothouse and all are currently under construction at Eastern’s Allanton facility. The vessel deliveries are scheduled to start in late 2016 and continue into 2017. The launch was hosted by Eastern's Project Manager Joe Stark.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. launched the Impala Soledad, the first in a series of four inland river towboats for IWL River, Inc. This series of CT Marine designed 134 ft. ABS Classed Inland River Service towboats are Triple Screw with a Retractable Pilothouse and all are currently under construction at Eastern’s Allanton facility. The vessel series is scheduled for delivery starting in late 2016 into 2017. The launch on June 10, 2016 was hosted by Eastern’s Project Manager Joe Stark, a Navy veteran, followed by a decorated 25 year career with the FDNY as a Marine Engineer.

IWL River, Inc., a Impala Terminals Colombia affiliate, and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) on May 20, 2015 signed a contract for the construction of four 134-foot ABS Classed Inland River, Triple Screw Towboats each with a Retractable Pilothouse (ESG Hulls 243-246), the shipbuilder announced. According to Eastern, this inland towboat design and detailed engineering is being provided by CT Marine of Portland, Maine. The new towboats for IWL River, Inc., one of Eastern’s newest clients, will service the inland waterways of Latin America for Impala Terminals.

Bergen Tankers’ 95-meter-long chemical and product tanker Bergen Viking has returned to service following its conversion from diesel-electric to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion. Delivered in 2007, the Rolls-Royce powered vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coastline in trade for Statoil as part of a fleet of six vessels owned by Bergen Tankers AS. Bergen Viking’s retrofit saw four of the ship’s original six diesel generating sets replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generating sets.

The Tai Pari and Tai Timu, two RAmparts 2400W Class tugs designed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, Canada, have been delivered by Cheoy Lee Shipyards to the Port of Tauranga Limited. The Tai Pari arrived in New Zealand on June 5 after a 30 day voyage on her own bottom. The Tai Timu departed Hong Kong on May 30 and is expected to arrive at the end of June. These two vessels represent a significant upgrade to the Port of Tauranga's fleet. Robert Allan Ltd. The RT Discovery and RT Endeavour, ART 80-32 class Rotortugs, have been delivered by Cheoy Lee Shipyards to Owner’s Elisabeth Ltd. The vessels are currently in Hong Kong and are ready for deployment to a busy commodity Port in Western Australia. These two vessels represent the first half of Elisabeth Ltd’s four boat order with Cheoy Lee Shipyards. The Advanced Rotortug (ART) designs incorporate the patented triple Z-Drive Rotortug, concept, featuring enhanced omni-directional maneuverability and the benefits of a fully redundant and precise propulsion machinery configuration.

To celebrate its new location in San Antonio, Texas, Laborde Equipment Services (LES) opened its doors to customers and associates at an open house. The facility was overflowing as the company welcomed over 125 guests at the event. Participants were given a facility tour, while also learning more about LES and its extensive line of products and services available to the South Texas market. Laborde's senior staff, including Tracy Laborde, Brian Laborde, Doug Oehrlein, Joe Manning, Jr., Trace Laborde, and Marc Laborde, was also on hand to welcome customers.

Rolls-Royce announced today that it has signed a contract for the delivery of design and equipment for a live fish carrier, to be built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey for Faroese ship owner Bakkafrost. The contract is worth approximately £5.8 million to Rolls-Royce. The vessel is a Rolls-Royce design, type NVC 386, featuring the characteristic wave-piercing bow designed to cut through waves in rough seas, making it possible to keep a more constant speed, reduce fuel consumption and increase onboard safety.

The Pilbara Apollo, the latest addition to the RAstar 3200 escort tug series was delivered to its owners, Rio Tinto Ltd., earlier this year. The vessel was constructed at Uzmar Shipbuilding Industry Co. in Turkey and will operate at Rio Tinto’s iron ore export facilities at Cape Lambert (Port Walcott) and Dampier, Australia. The Pilbara Apollo is the first of six new RAstar 3200 tugs to be delivered to Rio Tinto as part of this contract. The tugs will assist very large ore carriers in berthing and un-berthing at exposed, open water berths in severe wind and wave conditions.

Rolls-Royce gets a repeat Sølvtrans AS order for the design & propulsion package of a ship developed specifically for transporting live fish. The first ship is due for delivery in June this year and this latest contract also includes options to build two more vessels of the same type. Monrad Hide, Rolls-Royce, General Manager - Fishing Vessels said: "This new vessel will be built according to the same specifications as the first with a high level of technology and environmental solutions. The live fish carrier can take in up to approximately 400 tonnes of live fish.

Exhibitions are traditional launching points for major equipment makers, and Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is no exception. Last month at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans the ubiquitous marine power company made announcements regarding it progression toward US EPA Tier 3 Regulations. In addition, it brought to the show an interesting repower presentation  from its recent work on OCEARCH’s ‘Shark Wranglers’ vessel. Caterpillar in New Orleans highlighted its array of U.S.

Caterpillar to feature OCEARCH ‘Shark Wranglers’, at upcoming 2012 International Workboat Show, New Orleans. Recently featured in the hit television show “Shark Wranglers” on the History Channel, OCEARCH is a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on the ocean’s giants. Much of their recent work has been dedicated to solving mysteries surrounding great white sharks. The OCEARCH team sails the globe conducting scientific expeditions onboard the MV OCEARCH, which is powered by 2x Cat® 3412 engines and 1x  C4.4 and 1x  C6.6 generator while serving as an at-sea laboratory. OCEARCH Founding Chairman and Expedition Leader Chris Fischer will be speaking as well as spending time in meet-and-greet sessions.

The CCGS Vladykov is the first of three new Near-Shore Fisheries Research Vessels to be delivered to the Canadian Coast Guard. Commissioned in August 2012, the vessel was constructed at Meridien Maritime Inc. in Matane, Quebec to a design developed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, B.C. The CCGS Vladykov and its sister vessels will conduct scientific research in the Newfoundland and Labrador region. Secondary missions include search and rescue, environmental response and the support of marine programs for other government agencies.

A New Option for Catamaran Workboats. In 2011, Teknicraft Design of New Zealand designed and engineered what is believed to be one of the first quad propeller propulsion systems for a catamaran hull in the U.S. Designed for a newbuild, 134-foot research vessel recently delivered to C & C Technologies, Inc. of Lafayette, LA, the propulsion system had to accommodate many multi-missioned tasks. These will include shallow water hydrographic surveys, deep water offshore surveys and AUV operations.

OSV Almojil 60 is the first delivery in a pair of sisterships for the Mohammad Al Mojil Group in Saudi Arabia to a design by Wartsilla Ship Design Singapore Pte. Ltd. Construction is to ABS class, with the notation +A1 circle E, +AMS Offshore Support Vessel. Propulsion power comes from a pair of Caterpillar 3512C diesels, each developing 1575hp at 1800rpm, turning 2m diameter fixed pitch four bladed propellers to provide a top speed of 12 knots. Two Caterpillar C6.6 generating sets each developing 170kW provide electric power for onboard systems.

Caterpillar Inc. will be introducing the next generation of 40 to 175 kW diesel generator sets for 60 Hz applications using the C4.4 and C6.6 engines. The next generation diesel generators include improved enclosures offering three levels of sound attenuation. These generators are available with a wide choice of local market driven features which meet EPA Emergency Standby specifications, and are IBC and OSHPD certified. The standard generator sets feature a smaller more competitive footprint, with improved paint coverage providing excellent corrosion resistance. In November 2011, Tug Malta Limited, a subsidiary of Rimorchiatori Riuniti of Genoa, Italy, took delivery of the tug St Elmo, the latest RAmparts 3000W Class tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada. The vessel was built by Astilleros Zamakona of Spain in their Pasaia Shipyard. The tug will be based in Malta and brings Tug Malta's fleet to a total of eight tugs. This additional new vessel further modernizes the fleet after the recent delivery of the Robert Allan Ltd. designed Voith tractor Spinola in July 2009.

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has signed a contract to deliver highly efficient engines and propulsion systems for the world’s first Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) powered tugs. The two vessels have been ordered by Norwegian company Buksér og Berging AS and will enter service in late 2013 for Statoil, the international energy company, and Gassco, the operator of the gas transportation network off the Norwegian coast. Incat Crowther has launched the 95-ft Utility Catamaran Limitless. The vessel follows up on the highly successful Unlimited, a 78.7-ft utility catamaran designed by Incat Crowther for the same operator. Limitless is the 50th vessel built by Richardson Devine Marine and debuts the latest evolution of Incat Crowther’s hull form. This hull form recorded a top speed of 30.5 knots at sea trials. The new and improved hull means the larger, more capable vessel is able to travel three knots faster with a power increase of only 100 hp. Limitless is capable of carrying 60 tonnes of deadweight.

CAE has been selected to supply shipboard control systems for the fifth in a series of KDX-II class destroyers for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN). List price for similar repeat business is approximately $C6 million. The complete system will be delivered in 2005. This contract, awarded by prime contractor Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME), marks the tenth selection of CAE's integrated platform management system (IPMS) for the ROKN. Since 2000, DSME and CAE have collaborated on two other KDX-II vessels. "The DSME shipyard and the ROKN are longstanding customers, and this contract certainly reinforces CAE's position as a key supplier," said Rashid Khan, CAE's executive vice-president for marine control systems.
