Canadian Navy Names Pair of New Patrol Ships

The Royal Canadian Navy's second and third Harry DeWolf-class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) were officially named at Halifax Shipyard on Sunday.Named HMCS Margaret Brooke and HMCS Max Bernays in honor of two Canadians who served in the navy in the Second World War, the vessels are among six AOPS being delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy.“This is a proud day for our team of over 2,100 shipbuilders. These two ships are visible signs of the success of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.

Mackay Completes Electronics Commissioning Aboard CCGS John Cabot

Mackay Marine said it has completed final electronics commissioning during sea trials aboard the future CCGS John Cabot. Constructed at Seaspan’s Vancouver shipyard, the new ship is the third Offshore Fisheries Science Vessel (OFSV) built for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCGS) under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.Mackay said it was selected to be part of the team to support Thales Canada in its role as Tier-1 Partner to Seaspan Shipyards and as Electronic Systems Integrator for the construction of these vessels.

Study: How Changes in Shipping Patterns Affect Whales

Understanding how changes in shipping traffic and distributions of fin, humpback, and blue whales in the Pacific Ocean affect the risk of whales being struck by ships is the focus of a new study published in the scientific journal, Frontiers. The findings also have implications for highly endangered North Atlantic right whales in the Atlantic Ocean.Dr. Jessica V. Redfern, an Ecologist, Senior Scientist, and Chair of the new Spatial Ecology, Mapping, and Assessment Program (EcoMap) at the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, is the lead author of the study.

First LNG Export Cargo Departs Cove Point LNG

The Gemmata liquefied natural gas tanker left Dominion Energy Inc's Cove Point LNG export facility in Maryland early Friday, likely carrying the first export cargo from the facility that was expected to enter service in March, according to Reuters shipping data and energy traders. Officials at Dominion were not immediately available for comment. When the Gemmata docked at Cove Point earlier this week, analysts said it would likely be the first vessel to pick up fuel from the facility since the tanker came from Spain - a non-LNG exporting country - with less than a full cargo. Dominion has spent about $4 billion to add export facilities at Cove Point, long an LNG import terminal on the Chesapeake Bay.

Vessel Docks at Maryland Cove Point LNG Terminal

Gemmata could be the first vessel to pick up fuel from the facility since the tanker came from Spain - a non-LNG exporting country - with less than a full cargo, according to the shipping data. In addition to Gemmata, another vessel, the Methane Spirit, is also headed for Cove Point, according to the shipping data. Methane Spirit is located near Singapore and is expected to reach Cove Point around March 31. Once it enters service, Cove Point will be the second big LNG export terminal in the lower 48 U.S. Cove Point is designed to liquefy about 0.75 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) of gas. One bcfd can power about 5 million homes. In December, Dominion said Royal Dutch Shell Plc would take the initial LNG cargoes from Cove Point.

Methane Spirit, a liquefied natural gas tanker, said on Thursday it would arrive at Dominion Energy Inc's Cove Point LNG export facility in Maryland around March 31, according to Reuters shipping data. If correct, that could be the first vessel to pick up a cargo from the LNG facility, which Virginia-based Dominion said it expects to enter service in March. Dominion said it planned to spend $4 billion to add export facilities at Cove Point, long an LNG import terminal on the Chesapeake Bay. The Methane Spirit is currently off the coast of Japan where it was expected to drop off a cargo from Australia, according to the shipping data. Once it enters service, Cove Point will be the second big LNG export terminal in the lower 48 U.S.

US Expects East Coast LNG in 4Q 2017

Dominion Energy has announced that the 750 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) Cove Point Liquefaction Project is in its final stages of construction, confirming with EIA that it is 95% complete as of August 2 and expected to be in-service in the fourth quarter of 2017. Located on the Chesapeake Bay in Lusby, Maryland, it will be the second large-scale liquefaction export facility to begin operations in the Lower 48 states and the first on the East Coast, said a press statement from U.S. Energy Information Administration. In addition to construction of the liquefaction terminal, which began in October 2014, this project includes the installation of additional compression at Dominion’s Pleasant Valley compressor station in Fairfax County…

New US Pipelines to Drive Natural Gas Boom as Exports Surge

U.S. energy firms are scrambling to finish a slew of pipelines that will unleash rich reserves of shale gas in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio as the nation prepares to become one of the world’s top natural gas exporters. The pipelines are expected to boost output from shale fields in the three states by giving producers access to new domestic and international markets. Those states could supply about a third of all U.S. natural gas once the pipeline expansion is complete, up from about 25 percent now, according to projections from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

US Oil Drillers Cut Rigs for 10th Straight Week

U.S. energy firms this week cut oil rigs for an 10th week in a row to the lowest levels since December 2009, data showed on Friday, as some producers focus more on completing their drilled but uncompleted wells instead of drilling new ones. Looking forward, analysts forecast the rig count will bottom in a few months before recovering later this year when they expect crude prices to rise. Drillers removed 13 oil rigs in the week ended Feb. 26, bringing the total rig count down to 400, oil services company Baker Hughes Inc said in its closely followed report. That compares with 986 oil rigs operating in same week a year ago. In 2015, drillers cut on average 18 rigs per week for a total of 963 oil rigs for the year, the biggest annual decline since at least 1988.

San Leon Signs Moroccan Rig Deal

San Leon Energy signed a rig contract for the drilling of the El Aaiun-4 well on the Tarfaya conventional licence, onshore Morocco. The rig contract has been signed with Entrepose Drilling for the Cabot 750 rig. The well is expected to spud in the second half of August 2015, and will take approximately 30 days to reach total depth (TD) of around 2000 metres below rotary table. The reservoir target is Tertiary channel sandstones, with good reservoir properties expected, and the surface location is approximately 14 Km from a gas market (El Marsa OCP phosphate processing plant, near Foum el-Oued). LPG Tanker Repaired, Modernized and Converted

The 977-ft. LPG tanker Matthew was docked on August 17 into dry dock Elbe 17 of Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH to be repaired, modernized and converted in 33 days. The ship will be berthed at the quay for another 12 days so that tests can be carried out and the equipment set to work in cooperation with the crew, which stayed on board during the docking period. The Matthew, a large order for the traditional Hamburg shipyard, has hundreds of people working around the clock, seven days a week so as to hand over the ship to Cabot LNG Corp as scheduled.

Oceanex: Flensburger to Build Largest Canadian Flag Con/Ro
