Admiral Karl L. Schultz assumed the duties as the 26th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard on June 1, 2018. He previously served from August 2016 to May 2018 as Commander, Atlantic Area where he was the operational commander for all Coast Guard missions spanning five Coast Guard Districts and 40 states. Previous operational assignments include Sector Commander in Miami, Florida, as well as command tours aboard Cutters VENTUROUS, ACACIA and FARALLON. His senior staff assignments include Chief of the Office of Congressional and Governmental Affairs; Congressional Liaison to the U.S.

Maritime Reporter & Engineering News was offered the opportunity to interview Admiral Karl Schultz, the 26th Commandant in the history of the United States Coast Guard, in his office in Washington, DC. Just five months into his tenure, his plate is predictably full with a number of challenges, including: Attracting and retaining future U.S. Coast Guard personnel; addressing a number of assymetric threats, including cyber attacks; and ensuring captial and operating budgets are adequate to safely and efficiently carry out a global mission envelope, to name but a few.

Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) kicked off Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) with the launch of a new Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) website, April 1. With the NSTC geographic domain extending throughout the country, overseeing Recruit Training Command, Officer Training Command, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC), which contains more than 160 affiliated colleges and universities, this new SAPR website will provide "one-stop" shop for SAPR resources. "At NSTC, we train 98 percent of the Sailors and officers who enter the Navy," said Capt. Bob Fink, NSTC deputy commander. "Establishing a culture in our Navy that is intolerant of sexual assault and supportive of victims begins with us.

The maritime sector, including, ports, shipping industry and merchant navy in India is expecting the government would allocate a substantial amount of provisions and sops in the forthcoming union budget. Indian Shipping Industry has the potential to ignite growth, both through a trade resurgence and development of ancillary businesses, the industry sources say. The shipping ministry has already discussed with the finance ministry for help to restructure stressed shipping industry loans and tax exemptions to the debt-laden sector. The shipping ministry's demand comes at a time when the government is getting ready to present the Union budget at end of this month.

In an effort to standardize training and education across the military services, Recruit Training Command (RTC) and Officer Training Command (OTC) will run a pilot program, which will no longer require female accessions to cut their hair. The pilot program, which will run from January through March 2015, comes after receiving fleet feedback that junior Sailors and officers are not taught proper grooming standards with longer hair. This shift will align the Navy with every other armed forces service, which do not require female accessions to cut their hair. RTC and OTC required all females with long hair to cut it to the lower edge of the uniform collar. Now, female Sailors will have the ability to choose any hairstyle that meets uniform regulations.

USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) welcomed members of Pacific Region 12 United States Sea Cadet Corps Unit, on Oct. 5. The cadets are aboard Bonhomme Richard for hands-on training and to experience life aboard a naval vessel. While aboard, cadets toured engineering, operations, supply, and weapons spaces and also participated in a damage control demonstration. Cadets also participated in a line-handling evolution during an underway replenishment. Bonhomme Richard is en route to to take part in the city's 27th annual Fleet Week Oct 11-14.

The Kings Point Alumni Foundation Board of Directors will bestow upon two (2) MITAGS’ directors, the current incumbent Glen Paine (’78), and his predecessor, Charles (Chuck) Pillsbury (’68), the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award at the annual Alumni Banquet Dinner. This award is made to alumni of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy or the Cadet Corps on any of their five-year anniversaries. More than 600 Navy Leaguers from around the world will be in New York City from June 28 to July 2, 2002, attending the organization’s national convention and celebrating the Centennial of the Navy League of the United States (NLUS). The Navy League is a civilian organization that supports all of the U.S. sea services – the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine. For 100 years, the Navy League has been providing direct support to millions of active duty men and women and their families as well as educating elected officials and the public about the need for strong sea services. It is most appropriate that New York is the site for this centennial convention and celebration since the Navy League was founded in this city.

Congressman Ed Schrock (R-VA) along with 50 other members of the House of Representatives, yesterday introduced a Concurrent Resolution congratulating the Navy League of the United States on its 100th anniversary. In a letter to their colleagues soliciting co-sponsors, Congressman Schrock noted that “The Navy League was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. A group of shipmates from the now decommissioned U.S. Navy destroyer USS John A. Bole (DD-755) have established the “LT William G. Faris Scholarship Fund” in memory of a fellow shipmate. The fund benefits the Naval Sea Cadet Corps Scholarship program and will be awarded annually. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps Scholarship program, which consists of a “named scholarship” program, was established to provide financial assistance to deserving Cadets who wished to further their education at the college level.
