NYK Tests Biofuels on Australian Voyage

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), NYK Group’s Asahi Shipping, and Kobe Steel have announced a successful trial run of biofuels on a voyage between Japan and Australia.The companies supplied biofuel via ship-to-ship transfer to the bulk carrier Sunrise Serenity at the port of Kobe in Japan. NYK Launches Car Transport Service to Hai Phong

NYK has started a new car transport service “Ruffles Ao Dai RORO Express (REX)” linking Hai Phong in Northern Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh and Laem Chabang (near Bangkok). On October 8, the NYK-operated car carrier Modern Link arrived in Hai Phong for the first call. And the ceremony to commemorate was held attended by the top managements of the Port of Hai Phong, Tan Vu Terminal, among others. The previous service for Northern Vietnam called at the port of Cai Lan is once a month. Now the new service calls the port of Hai Phong, which is close to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and increases the number of calls to twice a month. Shortages of Bulk Cargo in Vietnamese Ports

Claims for shortage of bulk cargoes have become common in some Vietnamese ports and can lead to the arrest of the vessel by the receivers, says Gard Alert. Two of the ports frequently involved are Phu My (Cai Mep) in the south and Cai Lan in the north. Some vessels entered with Gard have recently been confronted with shortage claims upon discharge in Vietnam. One vessel was arrested, as the cargo insurers did not accept security in any form and insisted on a cash settlement in order to release the vessel. Vietnam Shipbuilding Executives Appeal Against Jail Sentences

Vinashin Shipbuilding Industry Corp. ex-officials in appeal against sentences for losses to the state budget of VND910 billion (US$43.5-million). Shipbuilding giant Vinashin, a state-owned company founded in 1996, came to the verge of bankruptcy in 2009 after accumulating an enormous debt of over $4.11 billion. The government later introduced reforms to get the embattled shipbuilder back on track. The Supreme People’s Court opened the hearing to consider the appeals of eight out of the nine defendants who had been sentenced by the Hai Phong city people’s Court in March for “intentionally violating the State’s economic management regulations, which causes serious consequences”. Among the eight is Pham Thanh Binh, former Vinashin chairman, 59, who has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Vietnam Builder Wins Ship Contract

The Pha Rung Shipyard Company, under the Vietnam Ship Building Industry Corporation (Vinashin), on Oct. 9 signed a contract to build five ships for the Forturne Marine Company of the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to a report from the Vietnam News Agency. This contract is significant, as it is Vinashin's first contract to export ships to the RoK. The 110 x 8.2 m, 6,500-ton ships will each cost approximately $11 million. Work for building the first ship is scheduled to begin in late 2005, with the ship transferred to the RoK 18 months later. After successfully building the 6,300-toe ship, Cai Lan 2, the Pha Rung Shipyard Company has won two consecutive contracts to build eight ships to be exported to the United Kingdom and five others to the RoK.-Enditem.
